Local residents to join NYC peace rally
Millions to demonstrate against War in Iraq in cities around
the world
MONTICELLO – Sullivan Peace is sending buses of residents
to New York City on Saturday, February 15 to call for a peaceful resolution
of the crisis in Iraq. Anti-war protesters predict “literally millions” of
people in New York, San Francisco and more than 30 international cities will
march against war in Iraq during the weekend.
Last month almost 200 residents of Sullivan County, NY and
Wayne County, PA went by bus to the massive January 18 rally in Washington,
D.C., which saw hundreds of thousands stage the largest peace protest since
Vietnam.
“This is a crucial time for the majority of citizens to let
the administration know we want the U.N. weapons inspectors to complete their
work,” said Hurleyville resident Padma Dyvine, one of the organizers.
“War will not fix the problems that the U.S. believes are
caused by the Iraqi government, but bombing will have a crushing effect on
the ordinary families.”
No location has been announced for the February 15 event,
which is being coordinated by United For Peace and Justice .The demonstration
will proceed even if NYC does not issue permits, meaning it could constitute
civil disobedience.
Buses leave from the old Shop-Rite on Broadway, Monticello
at 8:45 a.m., February 15. Round trip cost is $20. Residents are reminded
to bring plenty of liquids, food and warm clothes.
Wayne Peace is sending a bus from the Route 6 Plaza east of
Honesdale, at 8:00 a.m., organized by Kathy Dodge. Cost is $20 payable to
“cash” and mailed to 1632 Lake Ariel Hwy, Lake Ariel, PA 18436.
