Area reflects nation’s loss

BARRYVILLE — Like others across the nation, the town flag at the triangle in Barryville was at half-mast Monday, reflecting the February 1 loss of seven astronauts in the crash of the space shuttle Columbia.

Governor George Pataki issued a statement: “The people of New York join all Americans and the people of Israel in mourning today’s tragic loss of the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia.

“It is the tremendous courage, sacrifice and indomitable spirit of pioneers like New York’s own Michael Anderson, [a Plattsburgh native] and all the Columbia crew members that push the boundaries of humankind’s knowledge to new heights. As we boldly embrace the challenges and promise of a new century, we stand humbly and gratefully in their debt.

“The thoughts and prayers of all New Yorkers are with the families of these courageous heroes. I have ordered the flags on all state government buildings to be lowered to half-staff in honor of their tragic loss.”
