Happy 131st, Mr. Grey

LACKAWAXEN, PA — Despite blistering cold and occasional snow, the faithful turned out in respectable numbers for a weekend-long celebration of the birthday of the man often described as the world’s all-time besting-selling author of non-scripture, Zane Grey.

Grey’s best-selling western novels were grist for both Hollywood movie makers and generations of readers.

The annual birthday event occurred from Friday through Sunday, with lectures, tours, and video presentations said volunteer Henry Nardi.

This year was especially good for Grey aficionados like Nardi, since it was the first time that the Zane Grey West Society was able to hold its entire birthday program at the National Park Service operated museum, where the National Park Service waives the admission fee on the author’s birthday.

“It’s kind of like of having a birthday party for a grandfather who’s no longer with us,” Nardi said.

More than 100 people visited on both weekend days.
