ANTHONY L. JACKSON
JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Anthony “Tony” Jackson, a 5-year area
resident and child care supervisor for Abbott House and former police officer
in Elizabeth, NJ, died Thursday, January 23, 2003, as a result of injuries
sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was 32.
The son of Darrell Carmine and Joyce Jackson, he was born in
Elizabeth.
Survivors include his mother of Elizabeth, NJ; his father of
Metuchen, NJ; his paternal grandmother, Margaret Carmine; his wife, Kidra
Seaman Jackson, at home; seven sons, Anthony Jackson, Jr. and Marguise Jackson
of Elizabeth, NJ, Corey Jackson of Puerto Rico, Tyrone, Thomas, Devine and
Tevin Jackson, all of Jeffersonville; three daughters, Montigue and Shontice
Jackson of Elizabeth, NJ, and Tyana L. Jackson of Jeffersonville; one brother,
Todd S. Hawkins of Plainfield, NJ; four sisters, Tina Crawford of Elizabeth,
NJ, Alicia Carmine of Metuchen, NJ, Daralyn Tarantino of Somerset, NJ and
Valerie DiCarlo of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Friendship Baptist Church,
Ferndale. Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Newburgh.

LAURELLA KIELAR
HONESDALE, PA — Laurella “Sis” Quick Kielar died Sunday, January
19, 2003, at the Community Medical Center, Scranton, following a lengthy
illness. She was 63.
The daughter of the late Thedore and Margaret Graber Quick,
she was born and raised in Hawley, PA. She was employed as a meat wrapper
at Acme Market for 18 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene R.
Kielar, in 2001.
Survivors include her son, Eugene “G.T.” Kielar of Rileyville;
two brothers, Milton Quick of Dalton, and Vincent Quick of Bricktown, NJ;
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home, 428
Main Street, Honesdale, PA. Interment was at St. Mary Magdalen’s Cemetery.

CAROL A. MACKEY
CONYERS, GA — Carol A. Mackey died Wednesday, January 13, 2003.
She was 59.
The daughter of the late Chester and Mary Robinson Bonear.
She was married to the late Richard Mackey. She worked as a waitress while
living in Georgia.
Survivors include two brothers, Clark and Richard Bonear, both
of Honesdale, PA and a niece.
A memorial service will be Saturday, February 1, 2003, at 11
a.m. at the Central United Methodist Church, Honesdale, PA, with the Rev.
Mark Terwilliger officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central United
Methodist Church, Church Street, Honesdale, PA; the Grace Episcopal Church,

RONALD W. MELING, JR.
LACKAWAXEN, PA — Ronald W. Meling, Jr., died unexpectedly on
Thursday, January 23, 2003. He was 46.
The son of Ronald Sr. and Shirely Meling, he was born in Port
Jervis. Mr. Meling was a co-owner of Holbert Explosives.
Survivors include his parents of St. Augustine, FL; three daughters,
Jessie, Cara and Casey; son-in-law Joseph Caccavale; a grandson; a fiancé,
Beth Dyzer, and her daughter, Andrea; four sisters, Stacey Roe of White Mills,
PA, Jacquelyn Mueller of Cochecton, Tammy Lawler of Dingmans Ferry, PA, and
Sharon Koufus of St. Augustine, FL; many nieces and nephews and one great-nephew.

GARETTA PETERS
YOUNGSVILLE, NY — Garetta Peters, a businesswoman and homemaker,
died Thursday, January 23, 2003, at Bethany Village Assisted Care Facility
in Honesdale, PA. She was 91.
The daughter of the late Jacob and Minnie Likusa Haegler, she
was born in Paterson, NJ. Mrs. Peters owned Greta Fashions in Jeffersonville
and operated the Jeffersonville Auction Barn and was a dairy farmer for many
years.
Survivors include two sons, Burgess Peters of Youngsville,
and Russell Peters of North Branch; one brother, William Haegler of North
Branch; two sisters, Laura Dutcher and Beth Deharing, both of Florida; 13
grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Donald Peters, and a granddaughter.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Jeffersonville.
Pastor Robert McLeod officiated.

HERMAN M. ROPKE
NARROWSBURG, NY — Herman M. Ropke, a retired rural mail carrier
for 32 years and lifetime area resident, died Monday, January 27, 2003 at
Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. He was 78.
The son of Oscar and Emily Metzger Ropke, he was born December
3, 1924 in Lava, NY. He was married to Dorothy Schork Ropke for 54 years.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Narrowsburg
and its church council; a member of the Tusten Lions Club, having made Lion
of the Year in 1992 and Knight of the Blind in 1997; a founding member of
the Tusten Volunteer Ambulance Service and was very instrumental in building
the present ambulance building; a member of the Tusten Senior Citizens; a
member of the Rural Letter Carriers’ Association of New York State; a former
member of the Tusten Zoning Board of Appeals and the Tusten Planning Board,
as well as a member of the Grievance Board; a member of the American Legion;
a volunteer for the Bloodmobile; a member of the Tusten History Association,
Narrowsburg, NY; a member of AARP; an over 50 year member of the Narrowsburg
Fire Department; a member of the Lava Fire Department and a member and secretary
of the Glen Cove Cemetery Association of Narrowsburg, NY.
He was also a veteran of the U.S. army having served during
World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, a home; three daughters,
Dianne Robertson of Bloomington, IN, Nancy Rome of Prairieville, LA and Carol
Wingert of Narrowsburg; two sisters, Edna Sperr of Washingtonville, NY and
Lydia Bashoor of Accokeek, MD; three brothers, Oscar Ropke of Beach Lake,
PA, Christian Ropke of Narrowsburg; and Charles Ropke of Petaluma, CA; twelve
grandchildren; four great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one son, Kenneth and by one sister, Margaret Rose.
Visitation will take place on Friday, January 31, 2003 from
2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral
Home in Narrowsburg.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2003
at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Narrowsburg, NY. The Rev. Phyllis
Haynes will officiate.
Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

MICHAEL E. SMITH
MASSILLON, OH — Michael E. Smith, a retired supervisor for
the NYC Sanitation Department, died Friday, January 24, 2003, at home. He
was 54.
The son of Arthur J. and the late Elvira Baker Smith, he was
born in Staten Island, NY. Mr. Smith was a veteran having served during the
Vietnam War. He was a member of the VFW in Ohio.
Survivors include his father of Shohola, PA; two sisters, Jean
Ryan of Gouldsboro, PA, and Karen Pearson of Myrtle Beach, SC; one brother,
Thomas Smith of Gouldsboro, PA; one stepbrother, Robert Nelson of Las Vegas,
NV; two stepsisters, Rayna Lamont of Denver, CO, and Linda Schweiger of Staten
Island; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home,
Barryville, NY. The Rev. David Cramer officiated. Burial will be in Montoza
Cemetery, Barryville, NY.

ELDRIEDE SCHNEIDER
NARROWSBURG — Eldriede Schneider, a housewife and 43-year area
resident, died Monday, January 27, 2003 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart,
PA. She was 87.
The daughter the Klaus Maitias and Berta Lund, she was born
December 30, 1915 in Germany. She was the widow of Alfred Schneider, who
died in 1997.
Survivors include two sons, Walter and his wife Penny of Fairfield,
CT and Alfred and his wife Kay of Elk Grove, CA; one sister-in-law, Lillian
Schneider of Narrowsburg; four grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 30, 2003 from
2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2003
at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Phyllis Haynes will officiate.
Cremation will take place at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott,
NY.

PHILIP SNEDEKER
COCHECTON, NY — Philip Snedeker, a retired automotive technology
teacher at Sullivan County BOCES, died Saturday, January 25, 2003, at Robert
Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. He was 74.
The son of Frederick and Marie Schille Snedeker, he was born
in New York City. Mr. Snedeker was a member of the Fosterdale United Methodist
Church and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fosterdale Cemetery
Association. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Diane Zajac.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Ludwig Snedeker at home;
his mother of the Sullivan County Adult Care Center; a daughter, Barbara
Schultz of Hortonville; four sons, Glen Snedeker of Callicoon, Alan Snedeker
of Cochecton, Bruce Snedeker of Kenoza Lake, and Roger Snedeker of Narrowsburg;
one brother, Alfred Snedeker of Kenoza Lake; one sister, Mary Levine of Chattanooga,
TN; one son-in-law, Dale Zajac of Rochester; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild;
and six nieces and nephews.
Funerals services were held at Fosterdale United Methodist
Church, Fosterdale. Pastor Bill Hagerty officiated. Burial will be in Fosterdale
Cemetery, Fosterdale.

BETTY ANN (ELPHICK) STEFFENS
HAWLEY, PA — Betty Ann Steffens, a 10-year area resident and
homemaker, died Sunday, January 26, 2003, at the Robert Packer Hospital,
Sayre, PA. She was 60.
Born to the late William and Betty Wiston Elphick, she was
born in Jersey City, NJ. She was predeceased by her husband, Franklin Steffens.
Survivors include four daughters, Betty Bright of Tafton, PA,
Rebecca Dean of Bayonne, NJ, and Hollee and Johannah Steffens, both of Hawley,
PA; a son, James Auriemma of Bayonne, NJ; a brother, Frank Elphick of Jersey
City, NJ; a sister, Lois Urspruch of Jersey City, PA; 8 grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
Funerals services will be held at Teeters’ East Chapel on Monday,
February 3, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Martin L. Cox, Jr., of the Hawley
United Methodist Church will officiate. There will be a private cremation
at the Northern Bradford Crematory, South Waverly, PA.
