MARGARET RAINEY BAYLY
HONESDALE, PA — Margaret Rainey Bayly died in the Lehigh Valley
Muhlenburg Hospital on Monday, January 13, 2003 after an illness. She was
86.
The daughter of the late Thomas and Helene Purdy Rainey, she
was born in Tunkhannock on October 13, 1916. The widow of Elwin E. Bayly
who died in 1991 she attended the University of Illinois and was employed
by the Wayne Highlands School District until retirement.
A member of the Grace Episcopal Church and Altar Guild, the
E.C.W. and St. Catherine’s Guild, she enjoyed playing cards, reading and
watercolor painting. She was a member of the Honesdale Bridge Club.
Survivors include six sons; William Bayly of Buena Vista, VA,
David Bayly of Waymart, James Bayly of Oakdale, CA, Daniel Bayly of Reading,
Thomas Bayly of Imperial, and Stephen Bayly of Clinton NJ; a daughter, Jean
Bayly Wollrab of Bethlehem; a sister, Jean Rainey Carl of Schoharie, NY;
twenty-one grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Master Sergeant Retired,
Louis Wolf.
Services were held at Grace Episcopal Church, Honesdale. The
Rev. F. Graham Cliff officiated. Arrangement were made by the Arthur A. Bryant
Funeral Home of Honesdale.

ROBERT L. DAVIS
SHOHOLA, PA — Robert L. Davis, a lifelong area resident, died
Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Bronx VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY. He was 68.
The son of the late Robert and Ruth F. Williams Davis, he was
born in Cahoonzie, NY. Retired from Spark-O-Matic, he was an Army veteran
of the Korean War and a member of St. Patrick’s R.C. Church of Milford.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Ryan Deehan Davis at home;
five sons, Ryan Davis of Shohola, Andrew Deehan of Davie, FL; Timothy Deehan
of Lexington, KY, Robert Deehan of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY; and Michael Deehan
of Mill Rift; one brother, Dwight E. Davis of Port Jervis, one sister,
Catherine H. Kahrs of Sparrowbush, NY; one grandson, Andrew Robert Deehan;
and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Kahrs.
Services were held at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port
Jervis followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church
in Milford officiated by Rev. Gerald Mullaly.
Burial was in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Shohola.

LUCILLE ENGERT
CALLICOON, NY — Lucille Engert, a lifetime resident of the
area, died on Monday January 13, 2003 at Catskill Regional Medical Center
Harris, NY. She was 84.
Daughter of the late Walter and Amanda Bauernfeind Stewart,
she was born on February 19, 1918 in North Branch, NY. She was the widow
of Henry “Sonny” Engert and a retired bookkeeper for Engerts Appliances.
She was a Sunday school teacher and member of the North Branch Methodist
Church and a former 4H leader.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Highhouse and her husband
Ronald of Hortonville, NY; Nancy Gross and her husband James of Oceanside,
NY; three sisters, Ellen Mae Poley and Wilda Priebe of North Branch, NY;
Catherine Jean McCoach of Fosterdale, NY; a sister-in- law, Freda Robisch
of Callicoon, NY; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Cross, and by a brother
Howard Stewart.
Services were on Thursday, January 16 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral
Home, Callicoon, NY with officiating clergy Reverend Lauren Hertzler. Cremation
was at Twin Tiers Crematory, Endicott, NY.

ROY C. ENGVALDSEN
ROWLAND, PA — Roy C. Engvaldsen, a retired banker and former
resident of Rowland and Brooklyn, NY, died January 20, 2003 at Wayne Woodlands
Manor in Waymart, PA. After his retirement from Brooklyn, he worked at Watts
Hardware in Hawley for many years. He was 96.
The son of the late Charles L. Engvaldsen and Gunhild Nilsen
Engvaldsen, he was born in Rowland.
He was the widower of Florence Bensen Engvaldsen, who died
in 1961.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews. He was the last
surviving sibling of 10 Engvaldsen brothers and sisters, Lincoln, Edward,
Anne, Gladys, Chester, Harvey, Clarence, Nathaniel, Vincent and Quentin.
Services were held at Teeters’ East Chapel. The Rev. Elwood
E. Mather officiated. Burial was in Rowland Cemetery in Rowland, PA. Memorial

LILLIAN Z. HECTOR
MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Lillian Z. Hector, a former teacher of Narrowsburg
Central School and resident of Narrowsburg and Beach Lake, died Monday, January
13, 2003 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. She
was 80.
The daughter of the late Hugh and Hilda Little Zimmer, she
was born March 20, 1922 in Omar.
A member of St. Philip Lutheran Church, she retired from the
New York State Teacher’s Association after 35 and one-half years of teaching
and was a life member of the PTA of the Narrowsburg Central School. She was
also a member of the Grand Strand Senior Center in Myrtle Beach.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Claude, J. Hector
of Myrtle Beach, SC; a brother, Edward Zimmer of Weternville; three sisters,
Shirley McCormick of Geneva, Jean Morrow of Sun City, AZ, and Evelyn Cooke
of Evans Mills.
Services were held at Saint Philip Lutheran Church in Myrtle
Beach, SC. Pastor Dennis Stetzer officiatied. Interment was in the church’s
columbarium.

BARBARA R. KAPLAN
MONTICELLO, NY — Barbara R. Kaplan, a longtime area resident,
died Thursday, January 9, 2003 unexpectedly in the Town of Thompson. She
was 49.
The daughter of Ruth Rudicoff Kaplan and the late David Kaplan,
she was born May 19, 1953 in Boston, MA.
She is survived by her mother, two brothers, several nieces
and nephews, and area friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh.

MARIE HEIL LALLY
HAWLEY, PA — Marie Heil Lally of Hawley, an eight-year resident
of the area, died January 1, 2003 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale,
PA following a lengthy illness. She was 78.
Daughter of the late Edward Heil and Margaret Ludwig Heil,
she was born in Scranton, PA and formerly resided at the Hilltop Manor, Scranton.
She was a retired waitress at the Skyline Diner in Dupont. She was a former
member of St. Mary RC Church in Scranton.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Pillar of Hawley, PA;
three sons, Thomas Lally of Alexandria, VA, Robert Heil of Harrisburg, PA,
Michael Lally of Scranton, PA; a brother, Joseph Heil of Dalton, PA.; six
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at Teeters’ East Chapel, January 16 2003.
Rev. Willia B. Healey, Pastor Queen of Peace RC Church presided. Interment
was at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst, PA.

STANLEY LIESE
WHITE LAKE, NY — Staley Liese, a resident of White Lake since
1919 and a retired owner and operator of the Waldheim Hotel in White Lake,
died Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at the Hollywood Memorial Hospital in Hollywood,
FL. He was 93.
The son of the late Lewis and Celia Shulman Liese, he was born
March 21, 1909 in Ellenville.
A former Justice of the Town of Bethel, serving from 1968 to
1978, he was the co-founder and past president of the Bethel Medical Center,
a member of Temple Beth-El in Kauneonga Lake and one of the founders of the
Town of Bethel Ambulance Corps of which he still served on the board of directors.
He was a member of the Kauneonga Lake and White Lake Chamber of Commerce,
a member and past president of the Bethel Lions Club and a charter member
of the White Lake Fire Department.
Survivors include two nieces, Barbara Mitnick and her husband,
Howard, of Morristown, NJ and Manya Ungar and her husband, Harry, of Scotch
Plains, NJ; and two nephews, William Liese of Port Ewen and Thomas Liese
of Utah. He was the last of six brothers and two sisters.
Graveside services and burial were held Sunday in the Temple
Beth-El Cemetery in Bethel. Rabbi Irwin Tanenbaum officiated.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in the
spring.
VINTON MEDDAUGH
KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY — Vinton G. “Tuffy” Meddaugh, a lifelong
area resident and retired owner and operator of Vinton Meddaugh & Sons,
an ice and milk hauler, died Sunday, January 12, 2003 at the Seelig Division
of the Catskill Regional Memdical Center in Harris. He was 89.
The son of the late Jay W. and Mary Phillips Meddaugh, he was
born August 11, 1913 in the Town of Bethel.
He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in
Kauneonga Lake and a 60-year member of the Kauneonga Lake Fire Department.
He was a former commissioner of the Kauneonga Lake Fire District, a Town
of Bethel Republican Committeeman and a former chairman of the Town of Bethel
Republican Committee.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Rose Sauchuck Meddaugh,
at home; two sons, Jay F. Meddaugh Sr. and his wife, Dorothy, of Kauneonga
Lake, and Glenn S. Meddaugh of California, MD; four daughters, Carol Menck
and her husband, Robert, of Brattleboro, VT, Mary Stratton of Monticello,
Terry Epstein and her husband, Dr. Edward Epstein, of Wanaksink Lake and
Marjorie Rosen of Coconut Creek, FL; two sisters, Elnora Hall of Stamford
and Jean Schmidt and her husband, Bill, of Montgomery; 14 grandchildren;
and 19 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Judy Meddaugh,
and six brothers.
Services were held at the Community United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Kenneth Rodgers officiated.
Burial was made in the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.

NORMAN M. SWENDSEN
LOCKPORT, NY — Norman M. Swendsen, a retired Millward Alloys
factory worker and country music and square dancing fan, died on January
9, 2003 at the Newfane Inter-Community Hospital after a long illness. He
was 81.
The son of the late Adam and Rose Ralston Swendsen, he was
born on February 12, 1921.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Rosalie Patterson Swendsen
at home; 10 daughters, Norma Kuta of Beach Lake, Beverly Smith of Waymart,
Doris Pryzwara of Honesdale, Karen Swendsen of Virginia, Cindy of Florida,
Debbie Swendsen of Honesdale, Linda Caraco of Lockport, Patricia Rhodes of
Canada, Tammy Heinich of Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Jackson of Long Island,
and Janie Barber of Lockport; a sister, Alfa Swendsen of Florida; three sisters-in-law,
Patricia Paterson of Lockport, Teresa Hornsby of Louisiana and Blanch Wise
of Niagara Falls; a brother-in-law, Edward Patterson of Lockport, 19 grandchildren,
nine great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Swendsen; three brothers,
Richard, Russell and Raymond Swendsen; a sister, Hazel, and a grandson, Steven
Hiller.
Funeral services were held at Prudden and Kandt Funeral Home
in Lockport, NY. Burial was in Cold Springs Cemetery, in Lockport, NY.
