CLIFFORD N. BALLAGH
CALLICOON, NY — Clifford N. Ballagh of Callicoon, a retired
salesman and a former Grahamsville resident, died Tuesday, December 10, 2002
in Callicoon. He was 83.
Son of the late Arthur Benton and Mary Scott Ballagh, he was
born December 5, 1919 in New York City. He was the widower of Katherine Lewis
Sawyer Ballagh.
He was a member of the Grahamsville Fire Department and a member
and past chief of the Saddle River, NJ Fire Department.
Survivors include his companion, Muriel Krantz of the Beechwoods
section of Callicoon; a daughter, Joyce Ballagh Bambach of Andover, NJ; a
sister, Madeline Easton of Florida; three grandchildren, Dane Bambach of Keresville,
NC, John McDonald of Acton, MA, and Lt. Clifford Bambach serving with the
US Coast Guard; and three great-grandchildren, Myles, Paige and Annaliese
McDonald.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Wilson and a brother,
Weldon.
Cremation took place at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
LOUISE HINKLEY
LOOKOUT, PA — Louise Hinkley, a coordinator for the Area Agency
of Aging transportation program in the Lookout area, died unexpectedly at
home on Tuesday, December 10, 2002. She was 77.
Daughter of the late Henry and Grace Eldred Jennings, she was
a member of the Lookout United Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid Society.
She was the widow of Frank L. Hinkley who died in 1980.
Survivors include a son, Nelson and wife Jeanette of Branchville,
NJ; a daughter, Eloise Kelsey and husband John of Deposit, NY; two brothers,
Nelson Jennings of Delaware and Ralph Jennings of Honesdale; a sister, Ruth
Gager of Rileyville; three grandchildren, Todd Kelsey of Ithaca, NY, Peggy
Kelsey of Binghamton, NY and Allison Hinkley of Cape Coral, FL; nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, George Jennings and a sister,
Alethea Haire.
Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale.
The Rev. Kathy L. Grecco officiated. Burial was in the Lookout Cemetery.

ROBERT L. HOLBERT SR.
LACKAWAXEN, PA — Robert L. Holbert of Lackawaxen, who did excavation
and construction for Holbert & Kuhn, died Sunday, December 1, 2002 at
home. He was 80.
Son of the late Laverne and Margaret Brick Holbert, he was born
in Tusten, NY. He was the widower of Ann Marie Kievit Holbert.
He was in the Army during World War II. He was a member of VFW
Post 5635 in Lackawaxen and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Lackawaxen.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Ann McCloon of New Port Richey,
FL; a son, Robert L. Jr. of Lackawaxen; six grandchildren, Patrick, Lee, Michelle,
Matthew, Corey, and Christopher; three great-grandchildren, Amanda, Matthew,
and Ty; two sisters, Theresa McGee of Staten Island, NY and Mary Seeley of
Warwick, NY.
Services were held at Teeter’s East Chapel in Hawley. The Rev.
Eddie A. Nilsen, pastor of Good News Lutheran Church officiated. Burial was
in the Holbert Cemetery in Lackawaxen.

SHIRLEY AMELIA MOTT
WELCOME LAKE, PA — Shirley Amelia Mott of Welcome Lake, retired
resort owner of Shirley’s Lakeshore House in Welcome Lake and a lifelong area
resident, died Friday, December 13, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale.
She was 76.
Daughter of William and Francis Farr Case, she was born May
31, 1926 in Beach Lake, PA.
She was a member of the Beach Lake Methodist Church, the Welcome
Lake Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a past president of the Wallenpaupack
Area School Board.
Survivors include her husband, Russell at home; two sons, William
and wife Julie and Robert and wife Sharlene, all of Welcome Lake; a stepsister,
Luella Cosgrove of Welcome Lake; two granddaughters, Brianna and Mariah; nieces
and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, William Case and a stepbrother,
Ray Troop.
Services were held at the Beach Lake United Methodist Church
in Beach Lake. The Rev. Dr. Gordon E. Weightman officiated. Cremation took
place at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott, NY. Burial was in the Beach Lake
Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

ALFRED JULIUS OSIAS
HAWLEY, PA — Alfred Julius Osias of Lake Teedyuskung in Hawley,
a retired New York City fireman, died Saturday, December 7, 2002. He was 92.
He was born January 10, 1910 in New York City. He was the widower
of Ethel Josephine Weeks Osias who died in 1989.
He attended two years of architectural school after graduation
from high school. He was recognized for his hand-carved duck decoys.
Survivors include a son, A. Paul; a daughter, Fawn M. Glasgow,
both of Hawley; and four grandchildren, David, Jason, Simone Osias and Kaelyn
Glasgow.
Memorial services were held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in
Lackawaxen.

ROLAND REED
MONGAUP VALLEY, NY — Roland “Rolie” Reed, owner-operator of
Rolie Reed Trucking for the past 52 years, and a lifelong area resident, died
Friday, December 6, 2002 at home. He was 74.
Son of Earl and Margaret Calhoun Reed, he was born June 19,
1928 in Monticello.
He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Rock Hill,
serving as a choir member, a lay leader and a former board member. He was
a former member of Gideon’s International. Twice a year he delivered two tractor-trailer
loads of Bibles to New York City for free distribution. He was a 20-year contractor
for Leisure Time Ice & Spring Water Co.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Suzanne Luning Reed;
a son, Kenneth and wife Diane of Red Hook; three daughters, Julie Reed of
Easton, MA, Helen Chappell and husband Kenneth of Bethel and Melanie Cook
and husband Scott of Hatfield, PA; two brothers, Earl of Rivervale, NJ and
Milton and wife Audrey of Sebastian, FL; 12 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Madeline Shafer and three brothers,
Kenneth, George and Raymond.
Memorial services took place at the Church of the Nazarene in
Rock Hill. The Rev. Roy Shaffer and Rev. John Sherman officiated. Cremation
took place at Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh.

JAMES J. RODGERS
HAWLEY, PA — James J. Rodgers of Hawley, an area resident for
the past 14 years, died December 5, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was
73.
He was born November 4, 1929 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Leon and Marguerite
Rodgers.
Formerly of West Milford, NJ, he began his career as a tool
and die maker and retired as the Plant Operations Manager for BASF in Clifton,
NJ.
He is survived by his wife, Corry Rodgers; four daughters, Janine
Neukum, Joanne Harz, Anna Rolando, and Patricia Fernot; three sons, James
Rodgers, Jeff Rodgers, and George Rodgers; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A private memorial service was held at the convenience of the
family. Funeral arrangements are by the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228

AMBROSE THONNING
LACKAWAXEN, PA — Ambrose “Uncle Amby” Thonning, a 46-year division
manager in the Energy Supply Division of Con-Ed in New York City, died Sunday,
December 15, 2002 at Julia Ribaudo Nursing Home in Lake Ariel. He was 94.
Son of the late Edward and Matilda Strubing Thonning, he was
born July 22, 1908 in New York City.
He was a member of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in Shohola
and was a member of the Lackawaxen Fire Department where he was head of the
Health and Welfare Committee until he was 90.
Survivors include a sister, Doris Johanson of Lackawaxen; nieces
and nephews.
A Mass of the Resurrection was held at St. Ann’s Church in Shohola.
The Rev. David W. Cramer officiated. Burial was in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Shohola.
