Duggan resounds with music
By
RICHARD A. ROSS
On Tuesday, December 10 at 1:30 p.m.,
the Duggan Elementary fourth and fifth grade chorus
sang in the Annual Winter Sing-A-Long. The gymnasium
was packed with parents straining to get a glimpse
of their children who looked like they were having
fun in their efforts to demonstrate their ability
to carry a tune, and recognize pitch and time variations
for the standard holiday songs they performed. The
smile on each child’s face was reflected in
the sparkle of parent and teacher’s eyes.
Micia Losee is the Duggan School’s
dedicated music teacher who helps students understand
the performance aspect of music. While preparing to
perform, the students have opportunities to sing in
combination with other voices and instruments, practicing
a varied repertoire of music that spans the many customs
and traditions of the families that make up the Duggan
community.
No musical program at Duggan would
be complete if it were not for the unwavering commitment
of a special teacher. John Slaver accompanies the
students in their performances. He not only sets a
good example of giving his time and making an effort
to help others, but he demonstrates the dedication
of a real musician and his love for music. The students
at Duggan are fortunate to have such a wonderful role
model as John Slaver.
Immediately following the performance,
the children were joined by their parents at a formal
reception of punch and cookies. What a glorious day
for the arts program when hundreds of people are able
to come together to hear the harmonious strains of
music performed by children.
