SHOHOLA, PA — Alice Margaret Banta of Shohola, died Saturday, November 23, 2002 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 88.

Daughter of Thomas Joseph and Elizabeth O’Connel Lynch, she was born in Manhattan.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Greeley.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Edward Banta; three sons, Garry E. of Bethel, Eugene of Greeley and George of Beach Lake; two daughters, Barbara Scalione of Ridgewood, NJ and Nancy Himber of Deerpark, NY; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Sacred Heart Church in Greeley. The Rev. David Kramer officiated. Burial was in Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah, NJ.

BEACH LAKE, PA — Leo A. Budakowski of Beach Lake, a retired police officer for the New York City Police Department and a 30-year area resident, died Monday, November 25, 2002 at home. He was 82.

Son of Walter and Frances Zbozen Budakowski, he was born September 1, 1920 in New Haven, CT.

He was a veteran of the US Army during World War II, was a member of the American Legion Post #945 in Wormleysburg, PA, a member of the Pulaski Association in New York City and a member of the PBA of New York City.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria at home; three daughters, Regina Clawson of Port Jervis, NY, Janine McLaughlin and husband Bob of Lakeville, Maria T. Coutts and husband Jimmy of Hawley; three sons, Andrew of Willingboro, NJ, John and wife Ellen of Tafton, Richard and wife Sandy of New Mexico; a sister, Julia Starzyk of Wayne, NJ; ten grandchildren; a great granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Barney and a sister, Jean Sala.

Services were private at the convenience of the family. Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott, NY. Burial will be held at a later date in Glen Cove Cemetery.

HONESDALE, PA — Robert E. Dexheimer of Honesdale, a former employee at the Wayne County Courthouse in maintenance and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 56.

Son of the late Paul Dexheimer and Thelma Wilcox Dexheimer, he was born November 3, 1946 in Honesdale.

He attended the Honesdale school system.

Survivors include his wife of nine years, Sheila Mills Dexheimer; two sons, Robert Jr. of Honesdale and Mark J. at home; a daughter, Joann Marie Horst of Hawley; two stepsons, Gerald Sheerer of Honesdale and Thomas Strausburger of Lake Ariel; four brothers, Clyde of Lake Ariel and Francis, James and John, all of Honesdale; four sisters, Donna Smith of Honesdale, Nancy Robinson of Scranton, Brenda Hazen and Kelly Canfield, both of Honesdale; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Jo Ann Holl Dexheimer.

Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Yvonne M. Perri, pastor of Carley Brook United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale.


JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Rosemary Doherty of Jeffersonville, a retired secretary for Jeff-Youngsville Central School in Jeffersonville, died Friday, November 29, 2002 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center, Callicoon Division. She was 84.

Daughter of Arnold and Julia Ferrera Lordie, she was born May 13, 1918 in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Richard Doherty.

She was a member of St. George’s Roman Catholic Church in Jeffersonville and treasurer for the Jeffersonville Volunteer First Aid Squad.

Survivors include a son, Robert of Chula Vista, CA; and two nieces.

Services were held at St. George’s Church in Jeffersonville. Father Paul Osborne, O.F.M. officiated. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Long Eddy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jeffersonville Volunteer First Aid Squad.


RILEYVILLE, PA — Mary Elizabeth Masker of Rileyville, formerly of Hawley and Waymart, a cashier at Wal-Mart in Honesdale, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 43.

Daughter of the late Everett Masker and Marion Masker, she was born in Middletown, NY.

Survivors include a daughter, Blanche Warfield of Scranton; two sons, Jason and Michael, both of Scranton; her mother, Marion Masker of Carbondale; four sisters, Gloria Eck of Honesdale, Darlene Bidwell and Penny Rowe, both of White Mills, and Bonnie Masker of Carbondale; three brothers, Richard of White Mills, Robert of Honesdale and Theodore of Carbondale; two grandchildren; and her companion, Peter Hansen.

Services were held at the VFW Post 531. The Rev. Jan Tiebert, pastor of White Mills Methodist Church, officiated. Cremation took place at Maple Hill At Salem in Archbald.


NARROWSBURG, NY — Joseph Martin Purcell of Narrowsburg, a fixture of Sullivan County politics and sportsmanship for five decades, died Sunday, December 1, 2002, at the Hospice Inn of St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. He was 85.

Son of James E. and Elizabeth Lane Purcell, he was born July 15, 1917 in Narrowsburg. He was the widower of his first wife, Dorothy Meyers Purcell.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940, achieving the rank of sergeant. He then returned to the Merchant Marine because of a wartime shortage of experience mariners.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Purcell of Grahamsville; two daughters, Sarah Browne and husband Paul of Spencertown, NY and Marianne Purcell and husband Jeffrey Conklin of Selkirk, NY; three granddaughters, Lacey Browne of Providence, RI and Sara-Melissa and Kaity Conklin of Selkirk, NY; a brother-in-law, George Burkle of Narrowsburg; a sister-in-law, Joan Purcell of South Venice, FL; nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by all of his siblings, Mary, Margaret, James, Robert and David.

Memorial services will be held in Albany and Narrowsburg at dates to be announced.

MATAMORAS, NY — Donald M. Ricciardi of Matamoras, a retired meat cutter with Grand Union in Port Jervis and Milford, and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, November 18, 2002 in Port Jervis. He was 75.

Son of the late Michael and the late Mary Tufano Ricciardi, he was born April 22, 1927 in Port Jervis.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Matamoras and the Holy Name Society. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the Roosa-Fleming VFW Post No. 161 in Port Jervis.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Pinkala Ricciardi at home; a son, Donald Jr. and wife Carol of Port Jervis; two daughters, Marie Westfall and husband Stephen of Oaks, PA and Yvonne McGlade and husband Thomas of Port Jervis; a sister, Anne Crine and husband Herbert of Matamoras; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of the Resurrection was offered in St. Joseph’s Church. The Rev. John J. Turi officiated. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Port Jervis.

GREELEY, PA — Eva Hansult Sheahan of Greeley, a retired telephone operator in New York, died Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 103.

Daughter of the late William and Minnie Koch Hansult, she was born in Woodhaven, NY. She was the widow of William Sheahan who died in 1942.

She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Greeley. She was an honorary life member of the Greeley Fire Department Auxiliary.

Survivors include a daughter, Minerva Worzel of Greeley; a granddaughter, Gail Steuhl of Greeley; a grandson, James Worzel of Hawley; 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by two grandsons, Glenn and Jeffrey Worzel and a son-in-law, Robert.

Services were held at Teeter’s East Chapel in Hawley. Burial was in Greeley Cemetery.


HONESDALE, PA — Robert Joseph Southerton of Honesdale, a retired area milkman for 69 years, owner of Southerton Dairy, died Thursday, November 21, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 91.

Son of the late George and Catherine Myers Southerton, he was born at the family homestead in Honesdale. He was the widower of Ruth Lindsay who died in 1971.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane Giesen and husband John of Easton; Ann Hessling and husband Thomas of Sebastian, FL; three brothers, William, George and Bernard, all of Honesdale; a sister, Ruth Jeko of Honesdale; a grandson; four granddaughters; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Marie Smith.

Private funeral services were held at the family’s convenience. Burial was next to his wife in Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale.
