Plans move ahead for Christian high school

LIBERTY, NY — Pastor Bob Paquet challenged Christian clergy and church representatives attending the Glory To God Christian High School informational dinner meeting recently at the Liberty Days Inn.

His challenge was to support the new Christian high school, scheduled to open in September 2003 on Route 52. It will be Sullivan County’s first Christian high school.

Paquet urged pastors and church representatives to pay attention to the building and established operation of this new high school and to speak to their congregations about a religious education.

Paquet quoted former Yale University President (1795-1817) Timothy Dwight who said, “education ought everywhere to be religious education...parents are bound to employ no instructors who will not educate their children religiously and to commit our children to the care of irreligious persons is to commit lambs to the superintendence of wolves.”

The school’s steering committee chairman Warren Skuret said, “while it is not our intent to criticize the public school system, it is important to remember that by law the public schools cannot do what the Christian schools can do.”

“The Christian school has the freedom to pray with students, to teach the Bible, which is the basis of right living, according to what God says is right, and to teach students the values and principles found in Scriptures,” Skuret said.

The Glory To God Christian High School steering committee meets twice a month with separate committees on Prayer, Building, Financial/Legal, Fundraising, Publicity/Public Relations, Academic and Community Resource.

According to a statement, land for the school has already been purchased and cleared and Town of Liberty Planning Board approval has been granted. A well is being drilled within several weeks and a septic system will likely be installed before winter. Construction of the actual 40 x 80 two-story building will be started in the spring with occupancy for grades nine and 10 in September of next year. Grades 11 and 12 will be added in 2004 and 2005.

Phase two of the building project will be the construction and opening of a gymnasium in 2004.
