DESLY BLOCK
MONTICELLO, NY — Desly Block, a retired legal secretary of Cohen
& Silverstein Law Office in Monticello and longtime Monticello resident,
died Sunday, October 27, 2002 in St. Agnes Hospital in White Plains, NY. She
was 78.
Desly was born on June 20, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter
of Sol & Hortense Putterman Hyrkin. She was the widow of the late Ben
Block who died in 1970.
She is survived by two sons, Howard and his wife, Linda Block,
of Kauneonga Lake, and Paul and his wife, Sora Block, of Far Rockaway; two
sisters, Phoebe Lane of Union, NJ, and Adele Stern of Englewood, NJ; one borther,
Roy Hyrkin of Westtown, NY; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 29, 2002 in the
Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc., 186 Broadway, Monticello, NY. Burial
was in the Riverside Cemetery, Saddlebrook, NJ.
MARCIA E. GARLANDA
YOUNGSVILLE, NY — Marcia E. Garlanda, a homemaker and gardener,
died Thursday, October 31, 2002 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in
Harris. She was 53.
The daughter of the late Joseph and Eve Pearl Covens, she was
born March 16, 1949 in New York City.
Survivors include her husband, Gino Garlanda at home, and one
sister, Barbara Jo Covens of New York City.
A memorial service was held Saturday, November 2, 2002, at the
Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville. Cremation will be in Twin Tiers
Crematory, Endicott.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American
Heart Association.
Arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home Inc.,
Jeffersonville.
KENNETH F. HALLOCK
HONESDALE, PA — Kenneth Frank Hallock of Berlin Township and
former resident of Monticello, died Sunday, November 3, 2002 at Wayne Memorial
Hospital, Honesdale, following a lengthy illness. He was 85.
Born September 24, 1917 in Manhattan, NY, he was the son of
the late Kenneth and Ethel Hallock. Ken served in the U.S. Army during World
War II as a cook. He retired from the Office of the Aging where he was a driver
for Wayne County.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, the former Joan Ann
Trieber; six sons, Michael Hallock and wife, Marilee, of Monticello, Teddy
Hallock and wife, Dawn, of Roscoe, Theodore “Ted” Hallock of Swan Lake, Tony
Napolitano and wife, Louise, of Lava, Kenneth Trieber and wife, Angel, and
Benny Hopkins and wife, Tina, all of Honesdale; a daughter, Mildred Hurley
of Florida; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several other grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Marion Virigilo and Emilie
Napolitano.
Funeral services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home, 428
Main St., Honesdale, on Wednesday, November 6, 2002, with the Rev. Bryan Wright
of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Honesdale, officiating.
Cremation followed with the ashes interred in New York.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donors’ favorite charity.
VERSAL S. HENDERSON
PROMPTON, PA — Versal S. Henderson died unexpectedly at Wayne
Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, on Friday morning, of natural causes. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Duane Henderson, in 1997.
Born in Honesdale, daughter of the late Myron and Myra Keesler
Cottell, she was a member of the Prompton United Methodist Church and the
Methodist Women’s Society. She also attended the Alkins Union Baptist Church
and was a member of the Calkins Ladies Aid and an active volunteer for the
American Cancer Society.
She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Susan and
Robert Killam, and Nancy and Thomas Schilling all of Honesdale; two sisters
and their husbands, Virginia and Robert Young of Damascus, and Betty and Carl
Roberts of Honesdale; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded
in death by two brothers, Francis and Clinton and two sisters,Lois and Nancy.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 4, 2002, in the
Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale with services
by Rev. Lane Jones of the Calkins Union Baptist Church, Calkins. Interment
will be in the Glen Dyberry Cemetery, Honesdale.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Prompton United Methodist
Church or the Calkins Union Baptist Church.
ELIZABETH B. ILOFF
HONESDALE, PA — Elizabeth Blanche Warren Iloff died unexpectedly
Monday, October 28, 2002 at her home. She was 74.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Mervin
R. Iloff, who died on May 13, 1993.
Born June 20, 1928 in Dalton, PA, she was the daughter of the
late Otsego Warren and Florence Sheard Warren R.N. Elizabeth was employed
as lead assembler for the former Katz Company in Honesdale until she retired.
She was a member of the Prompton United Methodist Church, Central United Methodist
Church, Wayne Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and volunteered her time
for the Honesdale Church Community Food Pantry.
She is survived by a son, Mervin W. Iloff and wife, Sherry,
of Milanville; four daughters, Sharon Fries of Prompton, Mary Hessling, Susan
Fullem and Nancy Brussell, all of Honesdale; two sisters, Janet Loring R.N.
and Ann Kinsman, both of Honesdale; 14 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren,
several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace, and a brother-in-law,
Howard Loring.
Her funeral was conducted from the Hessling Funeral Home, 428
Main St., Honesdale on Saturday, November 2, 2002 wth services by Rev. Mark
Terwilliger, pastor of Central United Methodist Church, Honesdale. Interment
will be in the Calkins Union Cemetery, Damascus Township.

Association, American Cancer Society, Wayne Unit, or the Central United Methodist
Church.
DOROTHY MARTIN
HONESDALE, PA — Dorothy Martin of Honesdale, died Monday, October
14, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, after an illness. She was
86.
She was the widow of Earl Martin who died on February 21, 2000.
Born in Girdland, daughter of the late George and Bessie Davis
Appel, she was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church, Wayne County Republican
Women and Pleasant Valley Grange.
She is survived by a brother, Melvin Appel of Honesdale; five
sisters, Elma Davis of Girdland, Erma Simpson of Hawley, May Kayes of Honesdale,
Viola Holl of Waymart, and Lynetta Davis of Honesdale; four granddaughters,
and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son,
William L. Martin; two brothers, Gordon and Robert Appel; and a sister, Mildred
Appel.
Private funeral services were held in the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral
Home, 1228 Main St., Honesdale. Interment was at the East Dyberry Cemetery,
Dyberry Township.

THEODORE S. OLSHESKI
PAUPACK, PA — Theodore S. Olsheski died at home on Wednesday,
October 30, 2002, following an illness. He was 75.
He was born in Newark, NJ to the late Stanley and Karoline Rusak
Olsheski. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Magdalena Bauer
Olsheski.
He was a flight systems engineer for Bendix Corp. in Teterboro,
NJ, where he designed and developed flight control systems. Following his
retirement from Bendix, Mr. Olsheski worked at Miller Brothers in Honesdale.
He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and served in the Navy and Marine
Corps during World War II.
He is survived by two sons, Joseph C. Olsheski of Paupack, and
Thomas J. Olsheski of Scranton; a daughter, Karoline Gumble of Paupack; and
10 grandchildren.
Cremation will be at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.
