Sullivan West to open on time

By TOM KANE

JEFFERSONVILLE — Sullivan West schools will be ready to open on September 4. Scott Bridie of Turner Construction, who is overseeing the renovations and new construction for the Sullivan West Central School District, reported to the Sullivan West School Board that the three schools would be ready.

The Narrowsburg school is the first of the three schools to be extensively renovated.

“Demolition and construction are finished on the first floor of the 1929 section of the building,” Bridie said. “The second floor is complete as well. The cafeteria, kitchen, gym and boiler room will be completed for the first day of school. The new boiler room will be completed by October 1, 2002. The areas that remain to be completed are the library, art room, nurse’s office, kindergarten and pre-K.

The work has not been without some problems, he said. One sub-contractor fell behind schedule but that problem has been solved. “We will be ready to open,” Bridie said.

There will be a community walk-through at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 29.

At Jeffersonville-Youngsville, the abatement contractor will have completed the work scheduled for this summer before school opens. “We’ve begun demolition in the first floor in the first four classrooms,” Bridie said.

At Delaware Valley, abatement work has been completed on schedule, site work renovations have begun and the contractors have started renovation work on the first floor.

At the new high school site, the Leeward Company has begun clearing the athletic fields and wetlands mitigation, preparing to seed the athletic fields this fall, he said. Structural steel is being erected in Section A, he said. The masonry walls in Sector B and C are in progress and foundation work in Sections D and E is just about completed.

The new high school is comprised of five sectors. Sector A is the cafeteria and library, Sector B and C is classrooms, first and second floor, Sector D and E is the gymnasium and auditorium. Sector A will be finished in February 2003; B and C will be completed in May 2003 and Sectors D and E will be completed in August 2003.
