Twenty-one staff members certified

NARROWSBURG — On July 10 Lander’s River Trips offered a free CPR course to its staff. The course, taught by instructors from Honesdale Ambulance Corp, was held at the Narrowsburg Fire Department. The students were taught CPR and use of the AED. Lander’s River Trips offers courses like this to their staff on a yearly basis, ensuring their customers the best visit possible. Staff members come in contact with hundreds of people each weekend along the 73 miles that Lander’s River Trips services.

Staff members receiving their certification were: Andrew Morse, Christina Vidal, Mark Gilbert, Brett Burkle, Craig Burkel, Bruce Badger, Elizabeth Meyer, Susan McGrath, Meredith Esselman, Kentrina Drake, Christine McGrath, Kenneth Drake, Melanie Buddenhagen, Glenn DelMauro, Nicholas DelMauro, David Casey, Brian Warden, Ricky Priebe, Gary Steil, Paul Barrett and Mike Barrett.






Watershed workshop offered

HONESDALE — On Thursday, September 12 the Lacawac Sanctuary, Wayne and Pike County Conservation Districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will cosponsor a public program, “How to Form a Watershed Association.” This event will take place at the Honesdale High School, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

William Manner, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Regional Watershed Manager and Sally Jones, Pike County Conservation District Watershed Specialist, will discuss the course of action necessary to form a watershed association and the benefits of taking such action.

Topics covered will include what a watershed is, problems with our local watersheds, how to protect a watershed and ways and funding available to form a watershed association.

The state is encouraging local citizens to become active stewards of the watersheds where they live. Anyone interested in learning more about watersheds is invited to attend.

Pictorial cancellation postmark

SHOHOLA — The US Postal Service has approved a Pictorial Cancellation postmark to commemorate Shohola Township 150 Anniversary 1852-2002. The cancellation was initiated by the Shohola Railroad & Historical Society, organizers of Shohola Township 150 Anniversary Celebration. The Pictorial Cancellation will be available on the Township’s actual anniversary date Wednesday, September 25. The temporary Philatelic station will be set up at the Shohola Township Municipal Building, 159 Twin Lakes Road from 1:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mail-back service is available through the Shohola Post Office, Shohola PA 18458 for those unable to attend. Envelopes and cards that are to receive pictorial cancellations must bear unused postage at the applicable first-class rate and must have complete addresses. Commemorative envelopes, with first-class postage affixed, featuring the Erie Shohola Railroad Station are available for purchase by sending a $2.50 check, along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope to accommodate the #10 envelope, to SRHS, PO Box 79, Shohola, PA 18458.






Take a hike!

WINDHAM — On Saturday, August 31, join The Catskill Center for Conservation and Development in exploring the northern fringes of the Catskill Mountains along the Catskill Escarpment. This moderately difficult, eight-mile hike will follow logging roads and turnpikes. The meeting place will be along State Route 23, three miles east of Windham in Greene County. Meet at 9:30 a.m. and bring lunch and plenty of water.

Watershed informational meeting

PINE HILL — The Catskill Forest Association will be hosting a one-and-one-half hour informational meeting to introduce Watershed Forestry Program funding opportunities at the Pine Hill Community Center, 287 Main Street on Thursday, August 29 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. This workshop will be open to anyone owning forestland in the Catskills and specially focused to NYC watershed forest owners.

The workshop will cover topics such as goals of forest management, developing forest management plans, how to apply for funding if eligible and other forestry topics. The workshop is free and will include refreshments.

Kittatinny Canoes announces special events

DINGMANS FERRY — Kittatinny Canoes “Learn to Days” in September include; Learn to Canoe on September 7. Certified instructors who will teach novices the essentials of canoeing will meet participants at Kittatinny’s Dingmans Ferry, PA river base. The lessons culminate with a guided eight-mile trip from Milford Beach to Dingmans Ferry, PA.

Learn to Kayak on September 8 and 22. Challenge the river one-on-one in Kittatinny’s easy to use kayaks. Instructors meet and instruct participants at Kittatinny’s Matamoras, PA river base and then accompany them on a 10 mile whitewater river trip from Pond Eddy, NY to Matamoras, PA.

Kittatinny Paintball, located at our Barryville, NY Adventure Center, will remain open until the winter weather sets in and both Kittatinny Campgrounds in Barryville, NY and River Beach Campsites in Milford, PA, along with all river trips will be open through October.
