An
appreciation
By CONNIE MERTZ
There are times in our lives when a
picture is really worth a thousand words. It connects
us with reality; it gives us roots and forever engraves
an image in our minds. For the past six years, I have
penned “River Talk” and it has been a
wonderful journey where I can write about wild places
and things to help you connect with the awesomeness
of nature.
Last Wednesday, I connected with the
quaint little town of Narrowsburg. Crossing the Delaware
River and sensing the serenity and beauty of it all,
I felt a quiet tugging of my heart. I watched fish
surface, making gentle swirls on the surface. I watched
Canada geese living out another day on its calm waters
and I felt blessed to experience what your community
sees every day.
When talking to the staff of writers
at The River Reporter, I felt the
connection again. The community spirit was obvious
as well as the camaraderie among the staff. Narrowsburg
left a sweet lasting impression on us and it will
never be forgotten.
We drove for several miles around the
area to observe the landscape, the flora and fauna,
the people, and the wide-open spaces. We marveled
at how Sullivan County, New York resembles Sullivan
County, Pennsylvania. In fact, there was very little
difference in the two locations. We felt at home and
a part of a wonderful community.
From now on, every column I pen, I
will revisit your picturesque town and see the scenic
Delaware River from the bridge and I will once again
taste the priceless richness of your community.
