OWEN B. BAKER
COCHECTON — Owen B. Baker of Cochecton, a retired farmer and
longtime area resident, died Monday, July 29, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital
in Honesdale, PA. He was 76.
Son of the late Louis B. and Sadie Zuidema Baker, he was born
January 9, 1926 in Midland Park, NJ.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a U.S. Armed Guard veteran of
World War III. He was head of the East Cochecton Cemetery Board of Directors
and landfill supervisor for the town of Cochecton for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Susen Baker at home; two daughters,
Candice of the state of Florida and Ruth Burr of Cochecton; two sons, Dennis
of the state of Florida and Kent of North Carolina; a brother, Louis of the
state of Florida; a sister, Eunice Sansagrin of Westwood, NJ; nine grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
The Rev. Joan Laliberte officiated. Burial was in the East Cochecton Cemetery.

MABEL A. MECKLE BROCK
NARROWSBURG — Mabel A. Meckle Brock of Narrowsburg, a retired
housekeeper for Catskill Region Medical Center, Grover Hermann Division in
Callicoon, and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, August 2, 2002 in Mercy-Fitzgerald
Hospital in Darby, PA. She was 84.
Daughter of Edward and Loretta Whitebeck Drake, she was born
August 31, 1917 in Cochecton. She was the widow of Herbert Meckle who died
in 1981 and Robert Brock who died in 1984.
Survivors include a son, William Meckle of Dover, VT; a daughter,
Eleanor Nober of Narrowsburg; a brother, Emmet Drake of St. Petersburg, FL;
14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Florence; a son, Herbert;
two brothers, Leonard Herb and Joseph Drake; and a sister, Florence Haggerty.
Services were held at Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.
Burial was in the Lava Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

CHERI DuCHARME BROWN
LAKEVILLE — Cheri DuCharme Brown of Paupacken Lake Estates in
Lakeville, formerly of Houston, TX, an office manager for Fisher Oil &
Propane, a seven-year area resident, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 31,
2002 in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 40.
Daughter of Kenny DuCharme and the late Brenda DuCharme, she
was born in Newport Beach, CA.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry S. Brown of Lakeville;
her father of California; a sister, Rene of Houston, TX; a brother Kenny of
Houston, TX; two sisters, Debbie King and Melanie Page, both of Houston, TX;
her grandmother, Occie Brown of Houston, TX; nieces and nephews.
Services were held in Teeters’ East Chapel in Hawley. The Rev.
Martin L. Cox, Jr., pastor of the Hawley United Methodist Church officiated.
Cremation took place at the H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg.
BRUCE B. BURNS
MONTICELLO — Bruce B. Burns of Monticello, former owner of Burns’
Bar & Grill in Monticello, a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, July
30, 2002 at the Middletown Home in Middletown. He was 87.
Son of the late William and Mary Wilkinson Burns, he was born
June 9, 1915 in Ferndale.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Australia with the Military
Police.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Albrecht Burns at home; three
daughters, Sharon Murphy of Hummelstown, PA, Alice LeBlanc of Alburg, VT and
Barbara Benson of Marietta, GA; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.
Dr. John C. Kehoe of Alburg, VT officiated. Burial was in Rock Ridge Cemetery
in Monticello.

DR. WILLILAM J. BUROKUS
HONESDALE — Dr. William J. Burokus of Honesdale and Boca Raton,
FL, died Friday, August 2, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He
was 86.
Son of the late James Burokus and Mary Dutkus, he was born November
10, 1915 in Maywood, NJ.
He attended pre-med school at Johns Hopkins University and the
University of Wisconsin. He graduated from St. Louis University of Medicine
and practiced in Maywood and Paramus, NJ. He served in the Merchant Marine
and was on active duty in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member
of the Bergen County Medical Society, the American Medical Association and
the Medical Association of Family Practice. He was a member of St. Jude’s
Parish in Boca Raton and St. Mary’s and St. John’s in Honesdale. He belonged
to the Hackensack Golf Club, the Boca Grove Plantation Country Club and the
Elkview Country Club. He was also active in the Elk’s Club and Knights of
Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Rovas Burokus, DDS and his
sister-in-law, Isabelle V. Vileita of Honesdale and Boca Raton. Services were
held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Honesdale. Burial was in Christ The
King Cemetery in Franklin Lakes, NJ.

NICK DOMINGO
BETHEL — Nick Domingo of Bethel, retired executive chef for
the Concord Resort Hotel in Kiamesha Lake and a lifelong area resident, died
Friday, August 2, 2002 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris.
He was 77.
Son of the late Charles and Anna Mihalechko Domingo, he was
born December 10, 1924 in Smokeless, PA.
He was an owner and breeder of Standard Bred Horses at the Monticello
Raceway. He was a United States Navy veteran serving in World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jean Domingo, at home;
two sons, Steven J. and wife Christina of Spotsylvania, VA and Nicholas J.
and wife Gale of Massapequa, Long Island; two brothers, Anthony and Metro,
both of Fallsburg; three sisters, Helen Keiser of Kiamesha Lake, Ann Tunis
of Deerpark, Long Island and Irene Lotozoa of Philadelphia, PA; five grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Michael and John; and four
sisters, Eva Weinheim, Mary Domingo, Pauline Celedonia and Kathryn Yerkov.
Services were held at the VanInwegen-Kenny Inc. Funeral Home
in Monticello. Burial was in Luna Cemetery in Rock Hill.

CHARLES GILSON
HONESDALE — Charles Wayne Gilson, Sr. of Honesdale, a 15-year
employee of the Carbondale Concrete Company, died Friday, July 26, 2002. He
was 49.
Son of the late Delzine and Lillaine Gilson, he was born April
7, 1953 in Corning, NY.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Linda Gilson; two sons,
Charles Wayne Jr. and Donald Dewane of Honesdale; a daughter, Melinda Marie
Lewis and husband Todd of Honesdale; four brothers, Delzine and Walter, both
of South Carolina, Amos of Honesdale and Francis of Florida; five sisters,
Mary Johnson of South Carolina, Rose Miszler of Beach Lake, Stella Gilson
of New York, Nancy Outen of South Carolina; Kimberline Soja of Scranton; nieces
and nephews.
A memorial service was held in the Arthur Bryant Funeral Home
in Honesdale.
HARRIETTE BURTON MANN
DAYTONA BEACH, FL — Harriette Burton Mann of Daytona Beach,
FL, formerly of Walton, NY, died Sunday, July 28, 2002 in Vassar Brothers
Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was 92.
Daughter of Avery and Edith Kelley Burton, she was born July
21, 1910 in Lew Beach, NY. She was the widow of her husband of 69 years, Charles
Lloyd Mann.
She graduated from Margaretville High School and then received
her Teaching Certificate from the Delhi Teacher Training School. She taught
in several schools including Livingston Manor Central School District. She
was a member of the New York Retired Teachers Association. After moving to
Daytona Beach she became a member of the Daytona Beach Christian & Missionary
Alliance Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include five sons, Charles and wife Sharlene of Buffalo,
NY, Burton and wife Kathy of Hudson, NY, Robert and wife Beatrice of Daytona
Beach, FL, Russell and wife Mary Jo Dyroff-Mann of Wappingers Falls, NY and
Roger and wife Ellen of Milton, NY; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held in the Lew Beach Community Church. Burial
was in the Lew Beach Cemetery.
RUTH EMILY OELKERS
BARRYVILLE — Ruth Emily Oelkers of Barryville, owner-operator
of Oelkers General Store in Barryville, a 30-year area resident, died Saturday,
August 3, 2002 at home. She was 81.
Daughter of the late Thomas and Matilda Thorkelsen Olsen, she
was born February 25, 1921 in North Branch.
She was a member of Eldred United Methodist Church and the Sons
of Norway.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Gustave H. Oelkers
at home; three daughters, Norma Notzold and husband Richard of Westchester,
PA, Emily Oelkers of Barryville, and Verna Jones of Hawley, PA; a brother,
Norman Olsen and wife Bette of Odessa, FL; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter;
10 nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Olsen and a sister,
Helen Bohs.
Services were held at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville.
Pastor Linda Bohs of the Eldred United Methodist Church officiated. Burial
was in the Lutheran Cemetery in North Branch.

HAROLD OLAFSEN
ROWLAND — Harold Olafsen of Rowland, a former telephone repairman
for AT&T, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale.
He was 87.
Son of the late Sooful Olafsen and Ranghile Olafsen, he was
born in Brooklyn, NY. He was the widower of Marjorie Christiansen Olafsen
who died in 2001.
He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Rowland. He
was in the US Navy during World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Akin of Rowland and Diane
Jones of Red Bank, NJ; a son, Bruce of Brooklyn, NY; four grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Bethel Lutheran Church. The Rev.
Elwood E. Mather officiated. Burial was in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.
HOPE E. SCHUTZ
CARLEY BROOK — Hope E. Hauth Schutz of Carley Brook, Oregon
Township, a retired sewing machine operator for the former Katz Underwear
Company in Honesdale, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Scranton.
She was 68.
Daughter of the late Herman and Eunice Smith Hauth, she was
born September 4, 1933 in Morristown, NJ.
She graduated from Honesdale High School and attended Greenville
College in Illinois.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Allen L. Schutz;
two sons, Rev. Ron of Sarasota, FL and Ned and wife Laura of Scranton; a daughter,
Barbara Wetmore of White Mills; a brother, Richard L. Hauth and wife Ruth
Ann of Honesdale; two sisters, Louise F. Hauth of Minonk, Illinois; Virginia
Bossinger of White Plains, NY; 10 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services were by the Schutz family at the Hessling Funeral Home
in Honesdale. Burial was in the Girdland Cemetery in Lebanon Township.
CLARA L. SZABO
WHITE LAKE — Clara L. Szabo of White Lake, a Sullivan County
real estate agent and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, July 27, 2002
at the Andover Sub acute and Rehab Center in Andover, NJ. She was 63.
Daughter of the late Karoly and Julianna Szabo Lakoczky, she
was born August 13, 1938 in Budapest, Hungary. She was the widow of Julius
Szabo who died in 2002.
She was a member of the Bethel Lions Club and a former operator
of White Lake Citgo.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan Bunce and Monica Takourian
and husband Gary, all of White Lake and Cathy Lux and husband Joseph of Wesley
Chapel, FL; and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by several brothers.
Services were held at Ramsay’s Funeral Home in Kauneonga Lake.
The Rev. Ivan Csete officiated. Cremation took place at the Cedar Hill Crematory
in Middle Hope.

JOHN F. TINTLE, JR.
ORMOND BEACH, FL — John F. Tintle, Jr. of Ormond Beach, FL,
formerly of Hawley and former owner of the Church Street Hardware in Hawley,
died Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Ormond Beach, FL. He
was 83.
Son of the late John F. Tintle and Helen Sanders Tintle, he
was born in Bloomingdale, NJ.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bertha M. McDougall
Tintle; two sons, John F. III of Hawley and Jeffrey of Allentown, PA; a brother,
Robert of Oakland, NJ and six grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at the Hawley United Methodist Church.

RICHARD L. TRAVERSE
BARRYVILLE — Richard L. Traverse of Barryville, a retired truck
driver with Teamsters Local No. 445 in Newburgh and a 15-year area resident,
died Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis.
He was 78.
Son of the late Andrew and Willeta Cherry Traverse, he was born
May 15, 1924 in New Hampton.
He was a charter member of the Beaver Brook Rod & Gun Club
in Yulan.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Martin Traverse at home;
three sons, Mark of Upstate, NY, Wayne of Bloomingburg and Blace and wife
Laurie of Barryville; a daughter, Richa Markoff and husband Paul of Newburgh;
two brothers, Paul and wife Nancy of Denver, PA and Jack and wife Marion of
New Hampton; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Robert and sister, Molly
Cosgrove.
Services were held at the convenience of the family. Burial
was in the Montoza Cemetery in Barryville.

EUDALIA VANDUNK
MONTICELLO — Eudalia Van Dunk of Monticello, a bus girl for
Kutsher’s Country Club and a longtime area resident, died Monday, July 29,
2002 at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris.
She was 50.
Daughter of Alfredo and Luzia Rabelo Queiros, she was born October
7, 1951 in Brazil.
Survivors include her parents; two sons, Mauro L. and Mario
C.; three daughters, Luziane Miranda, Marcia Nieves and Mercia Miranda; four
brothers, Cleonir, Lauro, Edzio and Moises; six sisters, Gerli, Luiza, Margareti,
Elizabeti, Cidalia and Giodete; and six grandchildren, all of Brazil.
Services were held at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.
Burial was in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

ROSE J. WALLS
YOUNGSVILLE — Rose J. Walls of Youngsville, a homemaker and
a 26-year area resident, died Thursday, August 1, 2002 at home. She was 79.
Daughter of the late Guiseppe and Mary Qituccio Speciale, she
was born December 21, 1922 in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Charles Walls.
She was a member of St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Youngsville
and a member and first client of the Sullivan County Day Care Program.
Survivors include a son, Ronald and wife Mary Ann of Highland
Mills; two daughters, Joanne Walls and Rose Van Loan, both of Youngsville;
a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Doyle of Long Island; a brother, John Speciale
of Valley Stream; three sisters, Gloria Benivisto of Brooklyn, Martha Tassi
of the state of Florida and Theresa Watkins of Arkansas; seven grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Charles J. “Sonny” Walls and seven
siblings, Fred Speciale, Ann Speciale, Thomas Speciale, Salvatore Speciale,
Paul Speciale, Phil Speciale and Emily Caputo.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Francis Church
of Youngsville. The Rev. Father Paul Osborne officiated. Burial was in Laurel
Hill Cemetery in White Sculpture Springs.

REGINALD C. WALTER
YULAN — Reginald C. Walter of Yulan, a previous owner and founder
of the Maplecrest on Washington Lake and a longtime area resident, died Thursday,
August 1, 2002 at Belle Reve Senior Living Center in Milford, PA. He was 91.
Son of Cyrus and Ella Cooper Walter, he was born June 6, 1911
in Osterhout, PA. He was the widower of Joyce Greening who died in 1989.
He was a charter member and former president of the Yulan Fire
Department; a charter member and former president of the Town of Highland
Lions Club; a lifetime member of the Elks Lode No. 645, in Port Jervis; a
member of the Masonic Lodge No. 328 F&AM in Port Jervis and a former member
of the Eldred Central School Board of Education.
Survivors include three sons, Edward of Yulan, Raymond of Yulan
and Glenn of Las Vegas, NV; his companion, Louise Greening of Glen Spey; seven
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home
in Barryville. The Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiated. Cremation took place
at HG Smith Crematory in East Stroudsburg, PA.
