Narrowsburg firefighters celebrate
100th with a bang

NARROWSBURG — Mobs of people
turned out to help the Narrowsburg Fire Department
celebrate its 100th anniversary. They lined the streets,
sat on the roofs of buildings and cheered all the
visiting firefighters as they paraded by.
“This was the best parade ever,” said
Tom Wood of the fire company, one of the organizers
of the event that included a picnic and rides at the
Lander’s Campground flats.
Festivities were held on Friday and
Saturday, July 5 and 6, with the parade and fireworks
on the 6th.
Fireworks at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday
elicited Ohs! and Ahs! from residents and visitors.
Over 20 neighboring fire companies,
many of their members marching in phalanx and full
uniform, and several ambulance corps participated
in the parade. The Port Jervis Broome Street Traveling
All-Star band marched twice around the parade route,
enhancing the festivities with a sparkling military
beat.
State Senator John
Bonacic waved to the crowd as he rode by in a car.
Bonacic was recently a benefactor to the town by providing
state funding to restore sidewalks and a new street
surface to Main Street.
Earlier, on Friday, residents and visitors
were entertained by a band called Scooter Hall and
a drum circle was held on Saturday night by the Dancing
Bear Country group from Greeley, PA.
Together with the Narrowsburg Chamber
of Commerce, the department volunteers brought in
a variety of vendors, games, rides and contests. One
such contest was a water-carrying race among all the
fire companies. The objective was to see which team
had the best time in carrying water from a trough,
up a ladder and into a large barrel. In the process,
water was dumped on people as well as into the barrel.
At the end of the contest, it wasn’t
clear who won but everybody got wet.
