Celebrating patriotism in Bethel
By

BETHEL — The holiday weekend
saw a flurry of fireworks across the town as residents
turned out for numerous community celebrations.
July 5 found the sand at Smallwood
Beach packed with people for the fireworks presented
by the Smallwood Civic Association. As the sky darkened,
seasonal residents gathered with their neighbors,
some of whom hadn’t seen each other since last
summer ended. Pine Grove and Ballard Roads, as well
as the usual parking areas for the beach were packed
with spectators’ cars. When the fireworks boomed,
dozens of car alarms added their tones to the resounding
echoes.
On Saturday, July 6, the Town of Bethel
presented its annual fireworks display, launching
from the Kauneonga Lake Firemen’s Beach. All
day before the fireworks, local yard sales drew in
hundreds of customers, both local and visiting. As
evening approached, many headed for public areas around
White Lake and Kauneonga Lake to watch the fireworks.
Some gathered around 7:00 p.m. for a previously announced
parade that never occurred. Those enjoying the new
gazebo park above New York State boat launch were
treated to music by Clint Partridge and his crew from
Spirit of Bethel Records. When the sky was dark enough,
the band stopped and a CD of patriotic music accompanied
the fireworks display.
