High school construction begins
in Lake Huntington
By

LAKE HUNTINGTON — Some said it
couldn’t be done. Others said it wouldn’t
be done.
But it’s happening anyway.
The new $28,712,626 Sullivan West High
School is beginning to take shape on the side of a
hill in Lake Huntington.
Last April, the Leeward Construction
Company of Honesdale began doing the site work, preparing
the ground for the actual construction.
A few weeks ago in mid-June, BBL Construction
Company of Albany moved its heavy equipment onto the
site and began laying the foundations of the administration
building and the power plant.
“It’s wonderful to see the building
actually begin to take shape,” said school superintendent
Michael Johndrow.
A small phalanx of residents stoutly
opposed the construction every step of the way. They
cited supposed contamination in the ground and supposed
impurities in the well water, none of which have ever
been confirmed. The project is in its third week.
The new school is expected to be ready
in the fall of 2003.
“There’s a slight possibility it will
be ready sooner, but we can’t depend on that,” Johndrow
said.
