An extra effort for holiday security
REGION — Both New York and Pennsylvania
are extending security provisions for the first post-9/11
Independence Day celebration.
New York Governor George Pataki on
July 2 announced coordinated plans between state,
federal and city law enforcement to beef up security
for the holiday weekend. The plans will include an
increased number of uniformed state police troopers
at holiday events throughout the state.
Pennsylvania Governor Mark Schweiker
convened a June 27 meeting of the Commonwealth’s
Security Council to plan for holiday precautions.
In a statement,
Governor Schweiker said that Pennsylvania has not
received any credible threats for next week’s
holiday weekend, but nonetheless is taking whatever
steps necessary to enhance security across the Commonwealth.
“As a precautionary measure, Pennsylvania and
its communities are being pro-active in bolstering
ongoing security efforts for the Fourth of July,”
Governor Schweiker said. “Some of those additional
steps will be visible to the public, others won’t.
But rest assured, both state and local leaders are
taking whatever steps are necessary to ensure a safe
and happy holiday for everyone.”
Pataki echoed Schweiker’s position.
“New Yorkers should get out and celebrate with
family and friends this holiday weekend and be assured
that we are taking every possible precaution to ensure
the safety and welfare of our citizens.”
