Edu-tainment at SCCC

LOCH SHELDRAKE — Sullivan County Community College will once again present its edu-tainment lecture series, “Wednesdays at Sullivan.” The series, which is free and open to the public, features a variety of topics from music to art to humor.

The series begins on July 10 with “The Art of the Cantor,” with Jack Merlis. On July 17, Esterita “Cissie” Blumberg shares stories about “Growing Up in the Catskills.” Jonathan Karp presents “Origins and Impact of Hasidism” on July 24 and Terry McGrath conveys “The Essence of Humor” on July 31.

Broadway aficionados will enjoy Marty Kupferberg’s “Lerner and Loewe” on August 7.  On August 14, Len Rosendahl will be “Demystifying Modern Art” and on August 21, Norman Garfield presents “The World of Sholom Aleichem.”

All lectures begin at 2:00 p.m. in the college’s Seelig Theatre. Refreshments, courtesy of ShopRite of Monticello, will be served prior to the lectures at 1:00 p.m.

Due to limited seating capacity, tickets will be required for entry. They will be available at 12:00 noon in the SCCC Campus Activities Office (located in the “H” Building) on the day of the lecture. There is a one-ticket-per-person limit.

Norris goes national

LIBERTY — Sullivan County BOCES Health Academy student, Leona Norris, who is also a senior at Liberty Central High School, will compete in the First Aid/CPR contest at the National Skills USA Championship at the H. Roe Bartle Conference Center in Kansas City, MO. The competition, which is sponsored by the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (Skills USA-VICA), will take place at the end of June. Norris earned the right to compete as a result of her first place finish in the New York State competition, held earlier this year. Sullivan BOCES Health Academy instructor Candy Gatta will accompany Norris to the national contest, where she will join more than 4,000 students from all across the country who will be competing in over 70 occupational and leadership skill areas.

Nearly 60 Sullivan County BOCES students are members of the local Skills USA-VICA organization, which provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development.
