Records set at triathlon

YULAN — Men’s and women’s records were eclipsed and a local triathlete completed in his 10th triathlon on a beautiful day at Washington Lake. Eighty-eight triathletes lined up to compete in the 10th Annual Highland Triathlon sponsored by the IGA G-Mart of Wurtsboro. The athletes all swam one half mile in Washington Lake, biked 14.4 miles through the Town of Highland and ran four miles on the Eldred-Yulan Road.

Doug Clark, of Morristown, NJ, the course record holder, blazed the hilly bike course in new record time and set an overall record of 1:13:43, almost two minutes faster than his old record. Before the race, Clark said he comes up every year because the course is so tough and the people are so friendly.

Sylvie Vitelli, of New York City, by way of France, took honors in the women’s division. She demolished the old bike record and set a new course record in 1:26:10. She will not be able to defend her new title as she is moving back to France.

Billy Schneider of Barryville was the only participant to compete in all 10 years of the races’ existence. Race director Doug Stern credits Schneider in part for the success of the race. “Bill helps set up the course and allows me to think of other things,” said Stern.

This year the Sullivan County Department of Public Works donated signs for the bike course, which made it easy for the participants to navigate their way through the Town of Highland.

Stern wishes to thank the Yulan and Highland Lakes Fire Departments, the local Constables, Sheriff’s Department and State Police for making sure the roads were safe for competition. He also thanks Dickie and Cheryl Haas and the Colonial Restaurant for hosting the event.
