ROBERT L. BATES

HAWLEY — Robert L. Bates of Hawley, a retired truck driver for Katz Factory in Honesdale, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 70.

Son of Katherine Seaman Bates and the late Rudolph Bates, he was born in Hawley.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict.  He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon M. Wittig; his mother of Hawley; two daughters, Kathy Scheer of Hawley and Natassja Bates at home; three sons, Robert of Honesdale, Michael of Honesdale and Matthew at home; a sister, Carol Bunger of Westwood, NJ; two brothers, Richard of Rowland and Thomas of Hawley; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the convenience of the family. Burial was in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.

HEDWIG FEINER

BEACH LAKE — Hedwig Feiner of Beach Lake, a retired systems coordinator for the New York Telephone in New York City and a 35-year area resident, died Monday, June 17, 2002 at Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home in New York. She was 85.

Daughter of Wladziu and Anna Butewicz Filipski, she was born April 3, 1917 in New York. She was the widow of Martin Feiner who died in 1979.

Survivors include a niece, Evelyn Hendricks of Brooklyn, NY; a nephew, Frank Uniack of New York City; a sister, Marie Uniack of New York City; and her dearest friend, Rosalie Gillow of Beach Lake.

Services were held at Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Narrowsburg, NY. The Rev. Thomas Jones officiated. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

MARIE GLORIA HENSEL

ELDRED — Marie Gloria Hensel of Eldred, NY, operator with her husband of “Under the Pines” restaurant and bar for 18 years, which her parents had started, died August 25, 2001 at Hospice, Atlanta, Georgia. She was 84.

Daughter of Charles and Marie Prokop, she was born July 4, 1917 in Detroit, Michigan. She was the widow of Paul Hensel who died in 2001.

Survivors include two sons, John and wife Paula of Marietta, GA and Charles and wife Susan of Grand Junction, CO; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Ann Schaaf of the Bronx and Lake DeVenoge; nieces and nephews.

She was cremated. Her ashes will be buried with her husband in Montoza Cemetery in Eldred.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 6, 11:00 a.m. at St. Jacobi Lutheran Church in Shohola. The Rev. Dr. Paul H. Spohn will officiate.

VINCENT M. McEVOY

HAWLEY — Vincent M. “Chuck” McEvoy of Hawley, a vice president for AT&T in New York and a communications consultant on Wall Street after retirement, died Friday, June 21, 2002 in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 74.

Son of the late Matthew and Anna Hendricks McEvoy, he was born in Astoria, Queens, NY.

He had worked in Alaska on the installation of the DEW Line Defense System. He was in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Knight; Bishop Hoban Council 797, Hawley; founded Knights of Columbus Memorire Rod & Gun Club in Seafod, LI, NY; National Field Trial Judge for German Shorthair Pointers; member of the Hawley Lion Club and Woodloch springs Golf League.

Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Mary Ann Elizabeth Gaetano D’Andrea; a daughter, Doreen Ferretti of Levittown, NY; two sons, Matthew of Ronkonkoma, NY and Richard of Pembrooke Pines, FL; a step-daughter, Patricia Keisendahl of Hawley; a step-son, Nicholas D’Andrea of Hawley; a brother, James of Huntington, NY; 14 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held in Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, LI, NY.

REGIS A. MILLER

HAWLEY — Regis A. Miller of Hawley, a secretary and bookkeeper for the Sandy Shore Company, the PP&L Company and the Miller Knitting Mill started by her brother, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at home. She was 73.

Daughter of the late Henry John and Kathryn Scholl Miller, she was born in Hawley.

She belonged to the Queen of Peace Parish in Hawley and its Altar & Rosary Society.

Survivors include a brother, Joseph E. Miller with whom she resided; two nephews, Richard Miller of Honesdale and Robert Miller of Canandaigue, NY; two nieces, Barbara Malone of Fanwood, NJ and Ellen Arnoldini of Honesdale; three great-nieces and a great-nephew.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Henry Miller and Russell Miller.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered in Queen of Peace Church in Hawley. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

AMY MARIE LOUISE WOLFF MULLINS

YULAN — Amy Marie Louise Wolff Mullins of Yulan, a retired supervisor of the New York Telephone Co. in Monticello and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, June 21, 2002 at home. She was 71.

Daughter of Alfred and Helen Fuchs Wolff, she was born December 15, 1930 in Port Jervis. She was the widow of Francis Mullins.

She was a former town council person for the Town of Highland; a member of the OES- Port Jervis chapter; a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Yulan Fire Dept.; a former member of the Beaver Brook Rod and Gun Club and a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Lackawaxen, PA.

Survivors include a son, Alfred of Woodbridge, VA; a daughter, Helen York of Yulan and Ithaca; two sisters, Arlene Bennett of Yulan and Louise Wade of Houston, TX; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services took place at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville. Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

WILLIAM H. THELMAN JR.

WHITE LAKE — William H. Thelman Jr., a retired employee for New York Telephone Co. and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, June 22, 2002 at home.

Son of the late William H. Thelman Sr. and Martha Pink Thelman, he was born November 15, 1932 in Pine Plains, NY.

He was a charter member of the Bethel Lions Club, a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Monticello Elks Lodge No. 1544 and Mahogany Ridge Hunting Club.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Grace M. Thelman at home; a son, William and wife Laurie of Bethel; a daughter, Cynthia L. Shook and husband Gary of LaGrangeville; three granddaughters; nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, William Lee and wife Shirley.

Services were held at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello. The Rev. Gene M. Smith officiated. Burial was in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

EUGENE P. WILEY

MILANVILLE — Eugene P. Wiley of Milanville, a retired police officer for the Tri-Borough Bridge and Tunnel Authority and area resident since 1991, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 61.

Son of Richard and Helen Nugent Wiley, he was born March 4, 1941 in Flushing, NY

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served on the USS Lake Champlain from 1960 to 1962.

Survivors include his wife, Louise at home; a son, Timothy of Milanville; a sister, Alice Kerr of Bremerton, WA; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Narrowsburg. The Rev. Phyllis Haynes officiated. Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
