Highland passes logging law

By TOM KANE

ELDRED — By a unanimous vote, the Town of Highland Board passed a new logging ordinance at its meeting last Tuesday, June 18.

A public hearing had already been held on the issue. The purpose of the law is to ensure that any damage to town roads or property caused by the logging activity is repaired at the cost to the permit holder.

Anyone doing logging must secure a permit from the town’s code enforcement officer for each project. Clear cutting of more than five acres can only be done with a special permit from the town’s planning board. Plans for roads constructed to provide access to town highways shall be subject to review. The law is enforced immediately.
