Behind the scenes at the Forestburgh
Playhouse
FORESTBURGH — Nestled in the
heart of Sullivan County, the Forestburgh Playhouse
has been bringing professional theatre to the area
every summer since 1947. Thousands of people come
to experience the magic of traditional summer stock.
Theater-goers to the Forestburgh Playhouse can view
Broadway musicals or plays on the main stage, bring
children to matinees of original musicals, enjoy a
snack or cocktail while enjoying the post-show musical
cabaret or simply wander through the playhouse gardens.

While most theater-goers
only experience the magic of the theater,
those in the business understand that
it is a tremendous amount of collaborative
work.

Actors practice on the
outside rehearsal stage as the technical
crew builds the set. |
|
The technical crew includes
a set designer, technical director, carpenters,
props master, lighting designer, sound
designer, electrician, costume design
and wardrobe supervisor. The crew will
build and dress six sets this summer. |
|
The computer, pictured
in front of center stage, runs the lighting
sequences. Young designers and technicians
work with experienced directors to create
a successful design within the limits
of time, budget and staff. |
|
There’s nothing
like those dancing feet. Professional
dancers, from New York and beyond, look
forward to their time at traditional summer
stock theaters. Actors, directors and
technical workers are provided with room,
board and free transportation to the city
at the Forestburgh Playhouse. |
|
With pencil in hand,
the director molds the show, coordinating
dancers, actors and musicians, and combining
it with stage and lighting presentation. |
|
The actors have a full
day’s schedule with rehearsals and
assisting the technical crew. Once the
show opens, resident actors perform in
the post-theater cabaret. |
|
The cafe and tavern crew
feed the actors three times a day and
are responsible for the preparation and
presentation of food for the post-theater
cabaret nightclub. |
