2002 run for
the Red Cross
HONESDALE — Two hundred runners
and 50 volunteers turned out on a beautiful Saturday
morning, June 8 for the Fourth Annual Wayne Pike Chapter’s
Run for the Red Cross. The event consisted of a scenic
10K and 5K run around Promised Land Lake at the state
park. The chapter raised over $8,000 from the event
to support the programs of the local chapter. Race
Director Coulby Dunn said, “The proceeds from
this event will stay within our community to support
the vital work of our Red Cross. The Red Cross is
always there to provide first aid CPR and lifesaving
training, and to assist military personnel and their
families. We are not a government agency and receive
no outside funding. Events such as this that help
financially support the important work that we do.
This year has been difficult for our Red Cross chapter.
Besides helping many local families that were affected
by the events of September 11, we have also experienced
many local single family fires with families that
have needed our assistance with food, shelter, clothing
and personal items.”
The 50 volunteers that were on hand
to help were lead by the Board of Directors of the
Wayne Pike Chapter. Groups that helped at the race
were the Promised Land Fire and Ambulance Association,
the National Park Service, NEPARS and RACES Radio
groups, the Junior Firefighters from Hemlock Farms
and Red Cross volunteers from the community.

memory of John Gouse, past chairman of the event and
a former president of the Chamber.
A number of tee-sign sponsors ($50)
and golfers have already signed on, but there’s
room for more. The cost per player is $95, which includes
the awards dinner. The format is Captain and Crew
Scramble. The event begins with registration at noon,
a putting contest and a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.
Spouses and friends who want just to attend the dinner
are more than welcome (cost is $25).
