JOAN M. GRECO CHANIN

MONTICELLO — Joan M. Greco Chanin of Monticello, a retired employee of the Sullivan County Correctional Facility, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at home. She was 69.

Daughter of Samuel and Ester Chanin, she was born Joan Mae Chanin on June 13, 1932 in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Johnny Greco.

She was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, had been employed for years as a legal secretary for several local attorneys and was a computer wiz who volunteered for local nonprofit organizations with the county area.

Survivors include two daughters, Kippi Greco Schank of Naples, FL and Patrice Greco of Monticello.

A memorial gathering was held in Hurleyville.

CLARA ENGLERT

CALLICOON — Clara Englert of Callicoon, a retired nursery worker for Curtis Nurseries in Callicoon and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, May 13, 2002 at the Julia Ribaudo Home in Lake Ariel, PA where she had been a resident for several years. She was 95.

Daughter of the late Eugene and Mary Poley Englert, she was born August 17, 1906 in Fremont.

She was a member of the Holy Cross Church in Callicoon.

Survivors include a sister, Nora Schrempp of Ozark, AR; a sister-in-law, Lee Englert of Damascus, PA; a niece, Marion Kessler of Ozark, AR; a nephew, Robert Englert of Damascus, PA; six grandnieces and grandnephews.

Graveside services were held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Callicoon. The Rev. Father Ignatius Smith, OFM, officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

FRED LEROY

YOUNGSVILLE — Fred LeRoy of Youngsville, a retired carpenter with Carpenters Union Local #19 and #12, serving as financial secretary, and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at home. He was 73.

Son of the late Frank and Helena Esselman LeRoy, he was born October 24, 1928 in Liberty. He was the widower of Dorothy M. Eagin LeRoy.

Survivors include a son, Vaughn of Youngsville; a daughter, Renee Costello and husband Michael of Youngsville and Hoboken, NJ; four grandchildren, Timothy and Jeffrey Leroy and Michael Costello III and Jill Costello; a great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley.

Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Youngsville.

ANNA CAMPFIELD MARANZANI

HASBROUK HEIGHTS, NJ — Anna Campfield Maranzani of Hasbrouk Heights, NJ, formerly of Lodi, NJ and Narrowsburg, NY, a retired registered nurse at Hackensack University Medical Center for 25 years, died Sunday, May 12, 2002. She was 83.

She was born in Narrowsburg. She was the widow of William Maranzani.

Survivors include a daughter, Caroline Falzarano of Hasbrouk Heights; a sister, Mabel Gumper; nieces and nephews.

Burial took place at Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg, NY.

GERALDINE M. GOODACRE NAIRN

GREENTOWN — Geraldine M. Goodacre Nairn of Greentown, a retired 20-year secretary at St. Fidelis Elementary School in College Point, NY, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 15, 2002 in Mercy Hospital in Scranton. She was 75.

Daughter of the late Charles and Martha Baltzer Goodacre, she was born in Staten Island, NY.

She attended St. John’s University in New York. She was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Hawley. She had a vacation home in Greentown since 1965 and spent recent winters in Florida.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Courtenay M. Nairn; a daughter, Diane Glynn of Glen Spey, NY; three grandchildren, Kerry Glynn of Hawley, Macaulay Glynn and Dante Vittor, both of Glen Spey; a niece, Dawn Bye of Staten Island, NY; and two nephews, Charles Goodacre of MA and Mark Swezey of Shawnee Mission, KS.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Courtney Glynn; two sisters, Loretta O’Connor and Margaret Swezey; and a brother, Charles Goodacre.

A funeral mass was held at Queen of Peace Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

FRANK W. O’HAGEN

BEACH LAKE — Frank W. O’Hagan of Beach Lake, a caretaker for a children’s camp and a 30-year area resident, died Friday, May 17, 2002 at Hazleton Hospital in Hazleton. He was 66.

Son of Thomas and Annie McDaid O’Hagan, he was born December 1, 1935 in the Bronx, NY.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Linda, at home; four children, William of Ocean Gate, NJ, Brian of Purdy, MO, Orion of Staten Island, NY and Elizabeth of Egg Harbor Twp, NJ; two sisters, Mary Ann Gamelan of Rowland and Patricia Crosby of Colchester, England; three brothers, Gerald of Staten Island, NY, Daniel of the Bronx, NY and Thomas of New York, NY; 11 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Michael, and a sister, Jane Valla.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg, NY. The Rev. Thomas Jones officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

NELLIE M. REINING

GERRY — Nellie M. Reining of Heritage Village Health Care Center in Gerry, died April 2, 2002. She was 84.

Daughter of Alton and Jessalyn Browning Miner, she was born July 12, 1917 in Northfield, MA. She was the widow of the Rev. Albert P. Reining, a native of Beach Lake, PA.

She assisted her husband with pastoral duties throughout the New York Conference of the Free Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Jessalyn Weaver of Ephrata; three sons, Albert P. Jr. of North Chili, NY, Leslie of Rochester, and David of Webster; six grandsons; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased in death by her husband of 57 years, the Rev. Albert P. Reining and a daughter, Myrtle.

Services were held at the Gerry Free Methodist Church. The Rev. Cal Pratt, Rev. Herbert Olver and Rev. H. Robert Mitchell officiated.

JOHN A. ROBERTS

HONESDALE — John Andrew “Bunzy” Roberts of Honesdale, a retired maintenance engineer at Farview State Hospital in Waymart and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, May 13, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 82.

Son of the late John O. and Grace E. Babbit Roberts, he was born in Honesdale.

He was a graduate of Honesdale High School where he played basketball and baseball. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant with the 1260th Service Command Unit in the European Theatre of Action. He was a prisoner of war and was honored at a Prisoner of War Ceremony on Veterans Day 2001 at St. John the Evangelist Church. He was honored at Farview with the first Employee of the Year plaque. He was a member of the Grace Episcopal Parish in Honesdale and the American Legion Post 889 in Waymart. He played baseball in the former Delaware Valley League, softball with the former Lummus Company team in the Wayne County League and participated in many bowling leagues in Honesdale and Hawley. He was inducted into the Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his companion of 31 years, Joan Breidenstein; a son, Craig D. and wife Barbara of Waymart; two daughters, Rosalie Crum and husband James of Beach Lake and Melody Robbins and husband Craig of Waymart; two brothers, Carl and Nelson Roberts of Honesdale; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Michelle Bates; three brothers, Charles, Francis and infant Willard; four sisters, Mary Richter, Grace Roberts, Dorothy Vassico and Marie Drake.

Services were held in the Grace Episcopal Church in Honesdale. The Rev. E. Graham Cliff officiated. Military graveside services were held in the Indian Orchard Cemetery in Texas Township.

I. REINES SKIER

HAWLEY — Attorney I. Reines Skier of Hawley, who maintained a law office in Honesdale until 1952 and then in Hawley, died Sunday, May 12, 2002 at home. He was 98.

Son of the late Joseph and Minna Leba ‘Minnie” Reines Skier, he was born in Kovno, Russia.

He graduated from Hawley High School, the University of Pennsylvania and the New York University School of Law. He practiced law in New York until 1942 and then was called to active duty with the Army Air Force during World War II. He was admitted to the New York Bar Association in 1931 and was admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, the Superior Court of Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit of Pennsylvania, The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals and the US Court of Claims. He served as a special assistant Attorney General of Pennsylvania under former governors Scranton, Shafer and Shapp. He was a member of the Wayne County, the Pennsylvania and the New York City Bar Association and was a member of the New York County Lawyers Association. He incorporated the Hawley Library Association and had the charter of the Hawley Fire Co. amended to operate a volunteer ambulance association. He was a member of the Hebron Yeshiva in Jerusalem, Israel and at Camp Marasha, Lake Como in Wayne County. He was a member of the Machzikah Hadas Congregation, Scranton, the International Order of Odd Fellows and the Free and Accepted Masosns.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Dr. Marilyn Pardine; and several cousins.

Graveside services were held in Beth Israel section of the Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale. Rabbi Mordechat Fine officiated.

PASQUALE J. SCOTTO

SHOHOLA — Pasquale J. Scotto of Shohola, a retired mechanic for Atlantic Ziser in West Caldwell, NJ, died Thursday, May 9, 2002 at home. He was 71.

He was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Shohola.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Cronnelly Scotto; a son, Michael of Brooklyn, NY; a daughter, Patricia of Las Vegas, NV; and a brother, Anthony of Brooklyn, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered in St. Ann’s Church in Shohola. The Rev. David Kramer officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
