In the
spirit of community

By CHRIS CONROY

BETHEL — Music and fellowship warmed an otherwise chilly Sunday under the pavilion at Hector’s, as local bands took to the stage to raise money for a friend in need.

The day was to benefit Deana Pando, who was seriously injured while escaping from a deadly fire in Poughkeepsie at the end of January. Wheelchair bound and still recovering from her injuries, Pando has returned to Bethel to live with friends Carl and Nancy Dietz. The Dietz family plans to renovating their home in order to make it handicapped accessible. The money collected at the benefit will help fund that project.

May 19 was a busy day for Suzanne Gibbons, the organizer of the benefit for Pando. Gibbons spent the day running back and forth between the pavilion, where bands played and the field behind Hector’s, where she organized games for the children who had come to enjoy the celebration of community. She gave away prizes donated by many local businesses.

Many local performers, including Little Sammy Davis, John and Erin Slaver and Hugh Brodie, turned out to entertain the crowd. Though the weather was unseasonably cool, good food and an extra helping of community spirit helped warm those who turned out for the event.

“It’s good to see this many people here,” said Rose Paolini, who was helping out by selling 50/50 tickets. “It’s for a great cause.”

By the day’s end, over $1700 had been collected from raffle ticket sales and donations from the more than 100 people who attended.

Those interested in adding to those donations can send contributions to Deana Pando, PO Box 385, Smallwood, NY 12778.
