Links to scholarships
TENNANAH LAKE — On Sunday June 2, the
Western Sullivan United Teachers and School Related
Personnel (WSUT&SRP) Golf Tournament will be held
at the Tennanah Lake Golf Course. The fundraiser marks
the beginning of a new union scholarship fund for
Sullivan West graduates continuing their education.
The public and the school community
are invited to attend. There will be many prizes,
including a chance to win a car donated by Buddenhagen’s
Ford. The cost is $65 per player (or $60 if submitted
by May 25) and $15 for the barbecue. Businesses and
community members are invited to support the scholarship
by being sponsors at the following levels: gold $100;
silver $50; bronze $ 25.
The new Western WSUT&SRP Scholarship
Fund builds upon the traditions of union scholarship
funds established by the Jeffersonville-Youngsville
Faculty Association (est.1958) and the Delaware Valley
Faculty Association. Last year, over $7,100 in scholarships
was awarded to students of the former districts.
To register call Rick Ellison, tournament
chairperson, at 845/482 4610 ext 231.

A race with
Italian zest
MONTICELLO — For the second consecutive
season Monticello Raceway is offering a series of
races for drivers of different ethnic backgrounds
called “The Heritage Racing Series.”
The series kicks off on Monday afternoon,
May 20, with the Christopher Columbus Pace, featuring
Italian-American drivers.
Back to defend his championship from
last year is Mike Spano, who guided Dr. Herriot to
a 2:04:2 triumph in the first edition of the Columbus
Pace.
This year’s Heritage Series differs
from last season’s in that the ethnic races will be
presented weekly on Mondays for four consecutive weeks.
Last season there were eight different events, which
were spread out over 10 months.
Also slated are races for Irish-American
reins men on May 27, Canadian-born drivers on June
3 and drivers of German descent on June 10. There
will be a series finale on June 17 for the first and
second finishers in each heritage leg.
Monticello’s director of racing, Eric
Warner, said he still needs a few more drivers of
Italian American decent to fill the field on May 20.
Anyone fitting the criteria and interested in competing
can contact Warner at Monticello Raceway by calling
845/794-4100 ext. 557.
