GEORGE F. BERNAS
COCHECTON — George F. Bernas of Cochecton,
a retired farmer and butcher and a lifelong area resident,
died Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at the Roscoe Community
Nursing Home in Roscoe. He was 87.
Son of the late Frank and Elizabeth
Bartak Bernas, he was born April 23, 1915 in Cliffside,
NJ. He was the widower of Helen Daub Bernas who died
in 1994.
He was a member of St. Francis Xavier
Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg.
Survivors include nieces and nephews
and their families.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered
at St. Francis Xavier Church in Narrowsburg. The Rev.
Thomas Jones officiated. Burial was in the parish
cemetery.
THERON B. CALKIN
HONESDALE — Theron B. Calkin of Honesdale
died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at home.
Son of Ellery F. and Anna Shaffer Calkin,
he was born April 7, 1931 in Princeton, NJ.
He graduated from Princeton High School
in 1949 and then went to college. He was a career
military man and served as an Army Medical Corp Officer
in the Korean War and as a Naval aviator flying helicopter
gunships in Vietnam. He earned a Bronze Star with
Valor, 26 Air Medals and numerous other awards. He
retired with the rank of commander in 1980 and settled
in Honesdale. He was a member of the Honesdale Presbyterian
Church.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years,
Marjorie; three children, Betsy Davis of Kingsville,
TX, Peter Calkin of Honesdale and Suzanne Frisch of
Honesdale; six grandchildren, Trey, Tyler and Tara
Davis, TJ Frisch and Audrey and Mark Calkin; a sister,
Lois Mae Calkin of San Diego, CA; a brother, Ellery
F. Calkin of Clifton, VA; nieces and nephews.
Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery
in Arlington, VA.

RAYMOND CANFIELD JR.
HONESDALE — Raymond Canfield Jr. of
Honesdale, a retired cutter for the former Katz Company,
and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 26,
2002 at Northeast Veteran Center in Scranton. He was
77.
Son of the late Raymond and Barbara
Lutz Canfield, he was born May 9, 1925 in Honesdale.
He attended Honesdale High School and
was in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European
Theater where he was wounded.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years,
Marjorie Sweitzer Canfield; a son, Daniel at home;
a daughter-in-law, Cindy; and a granddaughter, Cheryl.
He was predeceased by a son, Thomas.
Private services were held at the convenience
of the family.
ROBERT E. COONS SR.
HONESDALE — Robert E. Coons Sr. of Honesdale,
a worker for the former Sherman Mills Company and
then as a cutter for the former Katz Company, died
unexpectedly Monday, April 29, 2002 at the Wayne Memorial
Hospital Emergency Room. He was 80.
Son of the late Leonard and Gertrude
Horst Coons, he was born June 29, 1921 in Fortena,
Wayne County.
He was a graduate of Honesdale High
School, class of 1939, and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran
of World War II stationed in Okinawa in the Pacific
Theater of Action. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Honesdale; the American Legion
Post #254 in Honesdale; charter member of the Alert
Hook and Ladder Fire Company; honorary member of the
Cherry Ridge Fishing Club and a member of AARP.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years,
Rose S. Slish Coons; a son, Robert E. Jr. of Honesdale;
a brother, LaFord of North Jackson; a sister, Helen
Harvey of Montrose; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Louise
Stiles; two brothers, William and Walter; a stepmother,
Gladys Coons; two stepbrothers, Clyde and Harry Quinn;
and a stepsister, Esther Haynes.
Services were held at the Hessling Funeral
Home in Honesdale. Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter, pastor
of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Honesdale,
officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

BARBARA A. EDWARDS
KAUNEONGA LAKE — Barbara A. Edwards
of Kauneonga Lake, a homemaker, died Thursday, April
25, 2002 at home. She was 74.
Daughter of the late Jack and Virginia
Neilson Phillips, she was born January 31, 1928 in
Seattle, WA. She was the widow of John Edwards who
died in 1991.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan
Evans and husband Sonny of Long Island, Joanne Evans
and husband Ray of Kauneonga Lake and April Edwards
and husband Noel of Neversink; seven grandchildren,
Torri, John, Kristen, Yvonne, Chris, Luke and Tyler;
three sisters, Betty Garber of Liberty, Penny Philips
of Texas and Phyllis Phillips of Georgia; her stepmother,
Addis Phillips of Ovid; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Ramsay’s Funeral
Home in Liberty. The Rev. James O’Rourke officiated.
Burial was in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery
in Liberty.
DANIEL KENNETH FOTIATHIS
MASTHOPE — Daniel Kenneth Fotiathis
of Masthope in Lackawaxen, formerly of Broadheadsville,
self-employed at D & A Painting, died unexpectedly
at Pocono Medical Center in Stroudsburg Thursday,
April 25, 2002. He was 27.
Son of Mycrine Fotiathis Maldon of Mastic,
NY and Allan Day, he was born in Springfield, MA.
He was a member of Our Lady Queen of
Peace in Broadheadsvile.
Survivors include his wife of six years,
April Joyce Camerino Fotiathis; his mother; two sons,
Brandon and Tyler at home; a daughter, Ireland at
home; a brother, Eric of Mastic, NY; a sister, Mycrine
of Mastic, NY; two nephews and a niece.
Services were held at Teeters’ East
Chapel in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor
of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, officiated.
Burial was at Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.
MURRAY GARFINKEL
MONTICELLO — Murray Garfinkel of Monticello,
a licensed real estate broker and owner-operator of
Resort Furniture Company in Monticello, died Thursday,
May 2, 2002 in Catskill Regional Medical Center in
Harris. He was 80.
Son of the late David and Anna Davidson
Garfinkel, he was born August 4, 1921 in Passaic,
NJ.
He was a member of Landfield Ave Synagogue
and one of the Founding Fathers of the Hebrew Day
School of Sullivan and Ulster Counties in Kiamesha
Lake.
Survivors include his wife, Muriel Coopersmith
Garfinkel at home; three sons, Jacob and wife Renee
of Washington, DC, Dr. Abraham and wife Mercy of Monticello,
and Chaim and wife Laurie of Kansas City, KA; three
daughters, Debby Stroli and husband Alex of Passaic,
NJ, Esther Vegh of Cleveland, OH and Sari Rosenberg
and husband Yossi of Spring Valley; two brothers,
Herbert and Abe, both of Miami Beach, FL; and two
sisters, Ruth Gibber of Monticello and Shirley Levy
of Monsey.
He was predeceased by a brother, Paul.
Services were held at the Joseph N.
Garlick Funeral Home, Inc. in Monticello. Rabbi Ben
Zion Chanowitz officiated. Burial was in Landfield
Ave. Synagogue Cemetery in Monticello.

MARGARET D. WALLACE GENIRS
HAWLEY — Margaret D. (Peggy) Wallace
Genirs of Woodloch Springs in Hawley, also of New
York City and Marco Island, FL, died Tuesday, April
28, 2002 in New York City. She was 63.
Daughter of William and Anna Smith Wallace,
she was born in Queens, NY.
She was a member of Queen of Peace Roman
Catholic Church in Hawley. She was an active golfer,
tennis player and book club member at Woodloch Springs
and Marco Island, FL.
Survivors include her husband of 42
years, Robert E. Genirs; two sons, Kevin of New York
City and Timothy of Warren, NJ; two daughters, Jeanmarie
Genirs-Josling and Joanie Genirs of New York, City;
her mother of New York City; a brother, William Wallace
of E. Northport, NY; a sister, Marianne Riccobono
of Valley Stream, NY; and five grandchildren, Zachary,
Andrew, Katherine, Matthew and Maggie.
A funeral Mass was offered at Queen
of Peace Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey,
pastor, officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

EMMA GYGER
JEFFERSONVILLE — Emma Gyger of Jeffersonville,
a homemaker, died Monday, April 29, 2002 at the home
of her daughter in Cochecton. She was 95.
Daughter of the late Jakob and Elise
Reichenbach Brandt, she was born December 23, 1906
in Gsteig, Switzerland.
She was a member of the First Lutheran
Church of Jeffersonville.
Survivors include her husband, Jakob
Gyger at home; a son, Wilhelm of Switzerland; a daughter,
Emmy DeFinis of Cochecton; a sister, Katharina Niederer;
a brother, Jakob Brandt, a special niece, Veronica
Niederer; nieces and nephews, all of Switzerland;
seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services
were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
Pastor Kristen Anderson officiated. Burial was in
the Jeffersonville Lutheran Cemetery in Jeffersonville.
ELSIE DUSCHL LOMBARDI
SHOHOLA — Elsie Duschl Lombardi of Shohola,
a retired real estate agent for the Pioneer Agency
in Martinsville, formerly of Livingston, died Saturday,
April 27, 2002 at home.
She was born in Dunellen. She was the
widow of Leon E. Duschl who died in 1983 and Louis
Lombardi who died in 1996.
She attended St. Luke’s Lutheran Church
in Dunellen.
Survivors include a son, Douglas L.
and wife Marcia of Middlesex; two daughters, Sandra
and husband John of Shirley, MA and Nancy E. Morgan
and husband David of Dunellen; four sisters, Martha
Butrico of Florida, Grace Norris of Hollywood, FL,
Alzaida Lever of Ocala, FL and Bernice Regitz of Pennsylvania;
nieces and nephews; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Services were held in the Mundy Funeral
Home in Dunellen. Burial was in Lake Nelson Memorial
Park in Piscataway.
SARAH J. STEGNER OBERLY
HONESDALE — Sarah J. Stegner Oberly
of Honesdale, a lifelong area resident, and a former
employee of the Stourbridge School cafeteria, died
Monday, April 29, 2002 at the Preferred Choice Hospice,
Mid-Valley Hospital in Peckville. She was 77.
Daughter of the late Russell and Mary
Howey Stegner, she was born July 9, 1924 in Honesdale.
She was a graduate of Honesdale High
School, class of 1942. She volunteered at Wayne Memorial
Hospital and the Other Shop on Main Street. She was
a member of St. John The Evangelist Parish and its
Altar and Rosary Society, the Court St. Martin, Catholic
Daughters of the Americas in Honesdale and a member
of the Perpetual 24 Hour Adoration at the Eucharistic
Chapel.
Survivors include her husband of 56
years, John Oberly; two sons, John Jr. and wife Barbara
of Rice, MN and Thomas of Coral Springs, FL; a daughter,
Susan of New York City; six grandchildren and a cousin.
She was predeceased by a brother, Francis
Stegner.
A memorial Mass for family and friends
was celebrated in St. Mary Magdalen’s Church in Honesdale.
Burial was in the parish cemetery.

ALFRED PINGEL
BEACH LAKE — Alfred Pingel of Beach
Lake, a retired butcher and farmer, operator with
his brother, Henry, of a very successful butcher shop
on their farm and a long time area resident, died
Monday, April 29, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital
in Honesdale.
He was 94.
Son of Johann Frederich and Anna Sophia
Pingel, he was born September 16, 1907 in Stotel,
Germany.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and
a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include a brother, Herman
of Littleton, CO; and four nephews and their families,
Fred of Beach Lake, Richard of Littleton, CO, Arthur
of Warwick, NY and Robert of Chicago, IL.
He was predeceased by a brother, Henry.
Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory
in Endicott, NY.

ELIZABETH DORFLINGER SMITH
WHITE MILLS — Elizabeth Dorflinger Smith
of White Mills, great-granddaughter of Christian Dorflinger,
who founded the famous Dorflinger Glass Company in
White Mills, died Saturday, April 27, 2002 at Wayne
Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 84.
Daughter of the late Dwight C. and Helen
Ward Dorflinger, she was born December 11, 1917 in
Scranton. She was the widow of Dr. Frederick J. Smith
who died in 1996.
She was a graduate of Honesdale High
School and the Wayne Commercial School. She was a
member of St. Joseph’s Church in White Mills and its
Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the
White Mills Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and the
Dorflinger Suydam Sanctuary.
Survivors include a son, Frederick D.
and wife Sally of Waynesville, OH; two daughters,
Priscilla Tagle of Honesdale and Susan Picconi of
Lebanon, NH; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St.
Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in White Mills. The
Rev. Joseph Kutch, pastor, officiated. Burial was
in the Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale.

FLOYD SCHNEIDER
WHITE LAKE — Floyd Schneider of White
Lake and St. Augustine, FL, a retired president and
owner of Carpenter & Smith, Inc. in Monroe, died
Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at home in St. Augustine. He
was 84.
Son of the late Edward and Catherine
Hornung Schneider, he was born December 20, 1917 near
Callicoon. He was the widower of Katharyn Carpenter
Schneider.
A 1936 graduate of George Washington
High School in New York City, he received a bachelor
degree from St. John’s University in Brooklyn in 1940
and a bachelor of law degree from St. John University
in 1943, which was later converted to a Juris Doctor
degree.
He was employed by General Electric
Credit Corporation and then the law firm of Blake,
Voorhees and Stewart in New York City before entering
the oil business in 1944. He was a member of the State
Petroleum Association and served on its board of directors.
He was a member of the board of directors of Citizen’s
Bank of Monroe. He served as a member of the Board
of Education for the Monroe-Woodbury Central School
District from 1960-1966. He was a founding member
of the Monroe volunteer Ambulance Corps, an Orange
County Democratic Party delegate to the New York State
Convention and a member of the Goshen Rotary Club.
Survivors include a son, Herbert C.
and Judith of Croton-on-Hudson; a brother, James of
Jeffersonville; a sister, Edna Winckler of Troy; a
granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by five brothers
and two sisters.
A memorial service was held at the Smith,
Seaman & Quackenbush Funeral Home in Monroe. Burial
was in the Monroe Cemetery in Monroe.

DONALD WALLER
HAWLEY — Donald “Scotty” Waller of Hawley,
operator of the Double W Ranch for many years and
Scotty’s Whitewater Rafting after that, died Thursday,
April 30, 2002 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart.
He was 72.
Son of the late Henry and Lilly Benzie
Waller, he was born in New York City.
He graduated from Farmingdale Agricultural
College and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean
conflict.
He served as an advisor to Boy Scout
Explorer Post 104 in Honesdale during the mid-1960’s.
Survivors include a son, Kevin of Honesdale;
three grandchildren; a sister, Irene Zvonik of New
York City and a nephew, David of San Diego, CA.
Private services were held for the family.
Cremation took place at Maple Hill At Salem in Archbald.
