SARAH ELIZABETH BOX
GALILEE — Sarah Elizabeth Box of Galilee
died of cancer on Sunday, April 21, 2002 at the Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia. She was 16 months old.
Daughter of Donald C. Box Jr. and Melody
J. Kenyon of Galilee, she was born November 22, 2000
in Honesdale.
Sarah was a friendly, smiling and laughing
child who spread much joy in her brief time here.
She will be missed by all.
Survivors include her parents; paternal
grandmother Judith Murtha of Honesdale and maternal
grandmother Elizabeth Kenyon of Galilee; three brothers,
Jeremy Box and Mike Clemo of Honesdale and Jamie Box
of Beach Lake; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were held at the Hessling Funeral
Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Lauren C. Hertzler Sr.,
pastor of the Grace Baptist Church in Callicoon, officiated.
Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Galilee.
RALPH MARTIN BRAUSER
BEACH LAKE — Ralph Martin Brauser of
Beach Lake, a retired painter and carpenter and assistant
pharmacist for Seibert’s Pharmacy and Keenan’s Pharmacy,
and a lifetime resident of the area, died Sunday,
April 29, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale.
He was 82.
The son of Herman A. and Anna Aeppli
Brauser, he was born on November 12, 1919 in East
Berlin. He was the widower of the late Dorothy Marie
Kleffmann, who died in 1988.
Brauser was a lifetime member of St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church in Narrowsburg, NY, having
served as usher for 37 years. He was a member of the
Narrowsburg Fire Department and a member and past
commander of the American Legion Post #1020, Narrowsburg.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having
served during WWII. He served as corporal of the 20th
Amphibious Combat Engineers, making three invasions—Africa,
Sicily and Normandy. He was in 16 countries and earned
eight battle stars, with 30 months of combat time.
He had a presidential citation and received three
arrowheads for initial wave as a combat invasion troop.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Brauser
and his wife Teresa of Windsor, CO and Michael Brauser
and his wife Karen of Beach Lake; one sister, Evelyn
Umlauf of Lititz; nine grandchildren; several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday,
May 2, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church,
Narrowsburg. The Rev. Phyllis Haynes and the Rev.
Donald Beck will officiate.
Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery,
Narrowsburg.

ROBERT T. BRUNDAGE
SEELEYVILLE — Robert T. Brundage of
Seeleyville, former employee of Larry Brundage Refuse,
Kost Tire Company and the Stourbridge School of the
Wayne Highlands School District, all of Honesdale.
He was 50.
Son of William and Audrey Rimlinger
Brundage, he was born December 2, 1951 in Honesdale.
He attended Honesdale High School. He
was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in
Honesdale.
Survivors include his parents of Honesdale;
a brother, Lawrence and wife Donna of Honesdale; three
sisters, Sharyn Wertman of Honesdale, Patty Roe of
Lakeville and Mary Menotti of Honesdale; an uncle,
two aunts, nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered
in St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale. Burial
was in the parish cemetery.

SOPHIA CIROCKE
HONESDALE — Sophia Cirocke of Honesdale,
a former volunteer for Wayne Memorial Hospital, died
Thursday, April 25, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital
in Honesdale. She was 85.
Daughter of the late Joseph and Henrietta
Hodor, she was born January 16, 1917 in Hudson, PA.
She was the widow of Leon Stanley Cirocke who died
in 1998.
She was a member of the German Club.
Survivors include a son, Leon Stanley
Jr. of Honesdale; a daughter, Jeanette Potts and husband
George of Natick, MA; two brothers, Edward and Chester
Hodor of Poland; a sister, Anna Lebvre of France;
two grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Stephanie Hodor
of Honesdale; and two nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered
at St. Mary Magdalen’s Roman Catholic Church in Honesdale.
Burial was in the parish cemetery.

BRIDGET M. CRISH
BETHANY — Bridget M. Crish of Bethany
died Monday, April 22, 2002 at Bethany Village in
Bethany. She was 91.
Daughter of the late Carmine and Marie
Figurelli Pignata, she was born March 18, 1911 in
Jersey City, NJ. She was the widow of Nicholas Crish
who died in 1974.
She was a member of St. Robert’s Bellarmine
Church in Freehold, NJ and a Eucharistic minister.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn
Smith and husband Elwin of Hawley; a brother, Thomas
Pignata of Bayonne, NJ; two sisters, Sylvia Colarusso
of Jersey City, NJ and Helen Jarkowski of North Carolina;
and a grandson, Stephen Smith of Hawley.
She was predeceased by a son, Robert.
Services were held at St. Andrews Church
in Bayonne, NJ. Burial was in Holy Name Cemetery in
Jersey City, NJ.

MADELINE CROTTY
CALLICOON CENTER — Madeline “Maddy”
Crotty of Callicoon Center, a 21-year area resident
and a retired Tupperware manager, died Sunday, April
21, 2002 at the Grover Hermann Division of the Catskill
Regional Medical Center in Callicoon. She was 87.
Daughter of the late George and Madeline
Lutz Hill, she was born January 14, 1915 in New York
City. She was the widow of John J. Crotty who died
in 1974.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church
in North Branch; a past president of the Callicoon
Center Ruralettes; past president of St. Matthews
Lutheran Church Ladies Aid Society; a former member
of St. Matthew’s Church; past president of the Ladies
Auxiliary to Clason Point Post No. 1408, Veterans
of Foreign Wars in the Bronx; a former Civilian Defense
Commander and a past president of the Williston Social
and Athletic Club.
Survivors include a son, John J. and
wife Rose of Callicoon Center; a granddaughter, Robin
Crotty; and a cousin, Marian Hozempa of Forty Fort,
PA.
Services were held at the Grace Lutheran
Church in North Branch. Pastor Kristen Anderson officiated.
Burial was at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson.

ELIZABETH D. GALLAGHER
SHOHOLA — Elizabeth D. Gallagher of
Shohola, a former office manager for the Okonite Wire
Co. in Passaic, NJ, died Monday, April 22, 2002 at
Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY.
She was 77.
Daughter of George and Anna-Jane Pritchard
Boyes, she was born in Wilkes-Barre on September 2,
1924.
She completed her secondary education
in the Clifton, NJ School System and was a graduate
of Churchman Business College in Newark, NJ.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters,
Jann Pennello of Lyndhurst, NJ and Elizabeth Hermstedt
of Clementon, NJ; two sons, Robert G. of Lackawaxen,
PA and Charles T. of Barryville, NY; six grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
Burial was in Milford Cemetery in Dingman
Township.

CAROL JOAN MATTHEWS GLASS
ROWLAND — Carol Joan Matthews Glass
of Rowland, formerly of Bethlehem, PA, a waitress
at Woodloch Pines for 17 years, died Sunday, April
21, 2002 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port
Jervis, NY. She was 69.
Daughter of the late Arthur Matthews
and Betty Magnussen Matthews, she was born in Woodcliff,
NJ.
She was a member of the Central Volunteer
Fire Co. Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Richard
Glass of Rowland; two daughters, Joan C. of Martins
Creek and Jean Acker of Emmaus; two sons, Mark W.
Reynolds of Nazareth, PA and David R. Glass of Martins
Creek; a sister, Doris Bright of Rowland and a brother,
Gene Matthews; a grandson; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Teeters East Chapel
in Hawley. The Rev. Gordan White of Hamlin Pentecostal
Church officiated. Burial was in Rowland Cemetery
in Rowland.

BERNIE HELLER
BETHEL — Bernie Heller of Bethel, a
retired dairy farmer for over 40 years, a town of
Bethel assessor, a New York State appraiser and a
real estate broker, died Monday, April 22, 2002 at
home. He was 85.
Son of the late Isidore and Anna Shein
Heller, he was born December 20, 1916 in New York
City.
He was a past vice president and charter
member of the Bethel Lions Club; a member of Temple
Beth-El Synagogue and a member of the New York State
Board of Realtors.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche
Jaffe Heller, at home; a son, Arthur and wife Sarah
of New Hampshire; two daughters, Michele Pidgon of
Phoenix, AZ and Ronita Heller of Albany; a brother,
Morris of Mongaup Valley; a sister, Elinore Rosen
of Florida; and four grandchildren, Brett, Jennifer,
Ariana and Perin.
Graveside services were held at the
Temple Beth-El Cemetery in Bethel. Rabbi Samuel Fishbein
officiated.
CHRISTINE LOUISE WALLING MEHRTENS
WHITE MILLS — Christine Louise Walling
Mehrtens of White Mills, formerly of Patterson, NJ,
a homemaker and 10-year area resident, died Wednesday,
April 24, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale.
She was 57.
Daughter of the late Frank Walling and
Dorothea, she was born in Belleville, NJ.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Hawley. She was a Girl Scout Leader,
secretary/treasurer, Cookie Chair, Lake Service Unit,
Jr. Consultant.
Survivors include her husband of 19
years, Eugene Mehrtens; three sons, William of Carbondale,
IL, Stevan and Eric of White Mills; two daughters,
Jennifer and Amanda of White Mills; three sisters,
Ellen Rabbitt of Bloomfield, NJ, Ann Cappela of Bayonne,
NJ and Karen Lewis of Manhattan, NY; 12 grandchildren;
a great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church in Hawley. The Rev. David Heckler, pastor,
and Rev. Klaus G.W. Molzahn officiated. Burial was
in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.

CARL T. PAZEL
HONESDALE — Carl T. Pazel of Honesdale,
a 40-year driver of a fuel oil truck for Lakewood
Oil Co., died Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at home after
an apparent heart attack. He was 81.
Son of the late John and Beulah Cook
Pazel, he was born September 6, 1920 in Vandling,
PA.
He attended the Grace Episcopal Church
in Honesdale.
Survivors include a daughter, JoAnne
Hazard and husband Dennis of Eldred, NY; a brother
Clyde and wife Dolores of Carmichael CA; three grandchildren;
an aunt and uncle; nieces and nephews.
Services were held in the Arthur A.
Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Paul McCauley,
associate pastor of the Central United Methodist Church
of Honesdale, officiated. Burial was in the Aldenville
Cemetery.

MARGARET W. SOUTHERTON
HONESDALE — Margaret W. Southerton of
Honesdale died Friday, April 26, 2002 at Wayne Memorial
Hospital in Honesdale. She was 95.
Daughter and last surviving member of
the Jack and Elizabeth Martin family, she was born
in Honesdale. She was the widow of Jerome E. Southerton
who died in 1990.
She was a member of St. John’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Honesdale.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol
Korband and husband Fred, and Diane Simmons and husband
Gary, both of Honesdale; two sons, Gerald of Honesdale
and Jack and wife Joyce of Victor, NY; 16 grandchildren;
two nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Kathryn
Wilmarth and a brother, Frederick Martin.
A funeral service was held in St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Honesdale. The Rev.
Kenneth Buckwalter, pastor, officiated. Burial was
in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.
