Students honored at HHS
HONESDALE — The Wayne Highlands School
District Board of Education honored three Honesdale
High School seniors on April 23. Each senior ranked
in the top 15 percent of their class and are National
Honor Society members. Pictured from left, Zachary
Stuart-Pontier, son of Glenn Pontier and Laurie Stuart,
has been involved in baseball, chorus, and drama and
is the editor of the Hornet Highlights. He has been
accepted at the New York University’s Tisch School
of the Arts, as a film major. Aasma Dibble, daughter
of Edward and Rita Dibble, has been involved in chorus,
vocal ensemble and drama. Dibble will attend Hampshire
College in Massachusetts to major in art with a focus
on painting, textiles and restoration. Sarah Schweighofer,
daughter of Joseph and Andrea Schweighofer, plans
to attend Kutztown University and major in Special/Elementary
Education; she has been a band member, chorus member
and is the tennis team co-captain.
Third annual
‘Jump Rope for Heart’ raises $3,400
WHITE LAKE —Students at the Duggan
Elementary School participated in the Third Annual
“Jump Rope for Heart” fundraiser to fight against
heart disease and stroke on Thursday, March 14. Overall,
70 students raised almost $3,400 for the American
Heart Association.
Top fundraisers included Amanda Tejada
with $229, ToniAnn Perry with $200, Marina Lombardi
with $200, Briana Sofia with $150, Kyle Raymond with
$125, Amanda Ihlefeldt with $105 and Mike Nastro with
$100.
The event was a record-breaking year
for the Duggan Elementary School. The students trained
in physical education classes to perform in such a
strenuous activity. They participated in class relays,
partner/individual tricks and a jump rope competition.
Winners of the jump rope competition
included Anthony Gray and Lori Copeland, second grade;
Bobby Wagner and Claire Pavlak, third grade; Chris
Bolduc and Briana Slutsky, fourth grade; and Mike
Nastro and Jordan Martin, fifth grade. Claire Pavlak
was the overall winner of the competition.
How to get
a business loan
LOCH SHELDRAKE – Sullivan County Community
College continues its Business Seminar Series 2002
with “How to Increase Your Chances of Getting a Business
Loan.” The seminar will be held on Wednesday, May
8 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the college’s Monticello
Center at 196 Broadway.
John Riley, the executive vice president
of the First National Bank of Jeffersonville, will
be the guest speaker. Riley will discuss the value
of credit scores, what you need before applying for
a loan and the loan application.
The fee for the seminar is $10 and
the registration deadline is May 3. To register or

Come celebrate
children!
HONESDALE — The Bethany Children’s
House Inc. Montessori Preschool is the host of the
Children’s Fest 2002. This community event will take
place on Saturday, May 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.
The Children’s Fest fundraiser supports
this non-profit, parent-run school. This year, part
of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Honesdale
and Bethany Wayne County Public Libraries.
The Children’s Fest 2002 committee
is now seeking anyone interested in having a booth.
It is a perfect opportunity to introduce yourself,
or services, to a growing market. Exhibitors are asked
to provide an activity or project for children that
encourages learning and creativity.

Summer courses
offered
HONESDALE — Luzerne County Community
College will offer courses during the summer in Honesdale.
Registration for courses in Honesdale will be held
at Wayne Highlands High School on Wednesday, May 15,
from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Courses scheduled to be offered in
Honesdale include Algebra, English, General Microbiology,
Psychology, Literature, History, Speech and others.
Off-campus day classes for the summer
session will begin on Monday, June 3. Off-campus evening
summer classes will begin on Tuesday, May 28.

Want to travel
and study at the same time?
EAST STROUDSBURG — Students can choose
from five exciting international summer study locations
this year through the study abroad program offered
at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
Classes may be taken for college credit
and are open to all students 18 or older, including
community members who wish to take the courses either
for credit or as audit.
Participants will travel to Costa Rica,
the Dominican Republic, England and Ghana as well
as Europe, according to Bo Keppel, ESU’s director
