MARGARET P. BANNON BUDDENHAGEN
HONESDALE — Margaret P. Bannon Buddenhagen, formerly
of Torrey and Honesdale, owner and operator of a dairy farm in Torrey
with her husband, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Forest city
Nursing Home. She was 82.
Daughter and last surviving member of the James
and Mary Mitchel Bannon family, she was born October 6, 1919 in
South Canaan. She was the widow of Charles Buddenhagen who died
in 1981.
She was employed by Dale’s Sportswear and later
by the former Katz Underwear Company in Honesdale. She was an active
member of the Carley Brook United Methodist Church and its Ladies’
Aid Society, was active in the former Carley Brook School PTA.
Survivors include three sons, Robert and wife Barbara
of Hailesboro, NY, John of Honesdale and Gary and wife Janet of
Enfield, CT; four daughters, Joan Trachtenberg of Starlight, Jean
LaPoint, Debra Rickert and Kathy Warring, all of Honesdale; 15 grandchildren;
16 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, James Bannon and
two sisters, Frances Crosby and Ruth Zielazinski.
Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home.
The Rev. Paul McCauley, pastor of Carley Brook United Methodist
Church officiated. Burial was in the Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg,
NY.

JOHN D. BURKAVAGE
HONESDALE — John D. Burkavage of Smith Hill in Honesdale,
a retired shop foreman, welder, and iron worker employed at the
former Lummus Company and Yuba Company of Honesdale and later at
Doyle & Roth Company, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at home. He
was 79.
Son of the late Stanley and Veronica Taninies Burkavage,
he was born June 11, 1922 in Ashley.
He served in the U.S. Army, 109th National Guard
during peacetime. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish
in Honesdale.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Rita McCormick
Burkavage; three daughters, Joan Spencer, Jean Nolan and husband
John, and Marie Bryant and husband Rodney, all of Honesdale; three
sons, Daniel and wife Debbie, Paul and wife Sue Ann and John and
wife Karen, all of Honesdale; a brother, Leonard and wife Kay of
Cold Springs; two sisters, Clementina Miller and Barbara Megivern
of Honesdale; 18 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Mary
Magdalen’s Church in Honesdale. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

GEORGE R. DAVIDSON, JR.
OLD TOWN, FL — George R. Davidson, Jr. of Old Town,
FL, formerly of Jeffersonville, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at
his home. He was 78.
Son of Susie McCafferty and George R. Davidson,
Sr., he was born April 29, 1923 in Rome, NY. He was the widower
of his first wife, Catherine T. Donnery Davidson of Highland Falls
who died in 1981.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines serving in
the Pacific Campaign during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Jordan Davidson
of Florida; six children, Susan Holbert of Lackawaxen, PA, George
R. Davidson III of Jeffersonville, NY, Theresa Curtis of Texas,
Robert Davidson of Hollister, CA, Erich Davidson and Cathy Davidson,
both of Quakertown, PA; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild;
a brother, Robert of Hacks Point, MD; two sisters, Mary Keene and
Janet Caldwell of Havre de Grace, MD; two sisters-in-law, Mary H.
Donnery and Dorothy Donnery, both of Highland Falls, NY; and nieces
and nephews in Maryland and Highland Falls, NY.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Lackawaxen
House in Lackawaxen, on Saturday, April 6, at 1:00 p.m. Burial will
be at the convenience of the family at Calvary Cemetery in Jeffersonville,
NY.

SARAH CAROLINE HUNT GARBE
HONESDALE — Sarah Caroline Hunt Garbe of Honesdale,
a registered nurse, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Wayne Woodlands
Manor in Waymart. She was 89.
Daughter of the late Edward M. and Minnie Field
Hunt, she was born in Otisville, NY.
She graduated from Farmingdale High School in Farmingdale,
NY and from the Nassau Hospital Nursing School in Mineola, Long
Island with a registered nursing degree.
Survivors include her husband, Wilbur Garbe; a son,
Ralph F. of Brentwood, NY; two daughters, Carol Meissner of Islip,
NY and Wilsa Ann Garbe of Honesdale; nine grandchildren; and 20
great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at the mount Hope/Plains
Cemetery in Otisville, NY. The Rev. Paul Williamson of the Honesdale
Gospel Tabernacle officiated.

FREDERICK H. HARTMAN JR.
HONESDALE — Frederick H. Hartman, Jr. of Honesdale,
a 30-year attendant at Fowler’s Service Station and a mechanic at
the Cherry Ridge Airport, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 27,
2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was 53.
Son of Fred H. “Bus” Hartman, Sr. of Honesdale and
the late Hazel M. Racht, he was born in Honesdale.
He graduated from Honesdale High School in 1966.
He was a licensed airplane pilot.
Survivors include his father, Frederick Hartman
of Honesdale; and several cousins.
Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral
Home in Honesdale. The Rev. David Norton of the Buckingham Baptist
Church in Starlight officiated.

HARRY KOWALCHIK
HAWLEY — Harry Kowalchik of Hawley, a self-employed
plumber, died Monday, March 25, 2002 at Mid-Valley Hospital in Peckville.
He was 81.
Son of Frank and Theodora Repella Kowalchik, he
was born in Scranton.
He was a member of St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Church
in South Canaan. He was a member of the US Army during World War
II and was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Mae Cron Kowalchik;
two daughters, Cynthia Kowalchik of Honesdale and Debra Ranner of
Honesdale; a brother, Joseph of E. Hartford, CT; a sister, Olga
Chuprevich of Ashville, NC; four grandsons and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Teeters’ East Chapel in Hawley.
Fr. Juvenala of St. Tikhon’s Russian Orthodox Monastery and Rev.
Albert Chafee of the First Presbyterian Church in Honesdale officiated.
Burial was in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.

ANTHONY SCHAEFER
COCHECTON — Anthony “Tony” Schaefer of Cochecton,
an 85 year area resident and carpenter who owned and ran The Schaefer
House, a summer boarding house, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at
Newark Hospital in Newark, NJ. He was 89.
Son of Anton and Katherine Amchel Schaefer, he was
born September 26, 1912 in New York. He was the widower of Julia
Schaefer who died in 1998.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic
Church and a member of the Cochecton Ambulance, both of Lake Huntington
and a member and former secretary of the Lake Huntington-Cochecton
Fire Department and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol S. Graves of
Wolcott; two grandsons, Brian Graves and wife Betsy and Michael
Graves and wife Margaret, both of Rochester; two nephews; a niece;
and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady
of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Lake Huntington. The Rev. Thomas
Jones officiated. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

GEORGE SCHNAKENBERG
BARRYVILLE — George Schnakenberg of Barryville,
a lifelong area resident and a former van driver for Veritas Inc.
in Barryville, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at home. He was 50.
Son of Georgette VanInwegen Schnakenberg St. John
and the late Melvin Schnakenberg, he was born June 24, 1951 in Ellenville.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy Donahue Schnakenberg
at home; three daughters, Tina Didrich of Virginia and Brandi Jo
Schnakenberg and Kylie Schnakenberg, both at home; his mother and
step-father, Charles St. John of Dunedin, FL; a granddaughter, Katlyn
Didrich; his mother-in-law and step-father-in-law, Jo and Ray Ingold
of Glen Spey and his father-in-law, John Donahue of Narrowsburg.
Services were held at the Sparrowbush United Methodist
Church in Sparrowbush. The Rev. Daniel Kantenwein officiated. Burial
was in Glen Spey Cemetery.
MICHAEL VAN SAVAGE
HONESDALE — Michael Van Savage of Honesdale, formerly
of Herrick Center, died Thursday, March 28, 2002 at Marian Community
Hospital in Carbondale.
Son of the late Conrad Van Savage and Julia Roll
Van Savage Zadarlick, he was born August 25, 1908 in Simpson. He
was the widower of Lottie Nebzydoski Van Savage who died in 1994.
He was a member of St. James Church in Pleasant
Mount.
Survivors include a son, Paul and wife Ann of Binghamton,
NY; a daughter, Helen White of Wappingers Falls, NY; two sisters,
Ethel Stankus of Uniondale and Anna Orlosky of Venice, FL; nine
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild;
nieces and nephews; and his companion, Jean Webber of Honesdale.
He was predeceased by a son, Walter; two brothers,
Metro and John; and a sister, Mary Masler.
A Mass was offered at St. Cecilia’s Church in Whites
Valley. The Rev. David Delzell officiated. Burial was in St. Cecelia’s
Hill Top Cemetery in Whites Valley.
SUSANNE NOBILE
HAWLEY — Susanne Weintraub Nobile, of Hawley, formerly
of Honesdale, Greeley and Yonkers, NY, died Saturday, March 30 at
home. She was 93.
She was born in London, England, and was a homemaker.
Surviving are a son, Michael Stewart of Greenport,
NY; and a grandson, David Schilling of Greenport, NY.
Private funeral services will be conducted at the
convenience of the family.
Cremation was held at the H.G. Smith Crematory,
Stroudsburg.
Arrangements were made by Teeters’ Funeral Chapel,
505 Church Street, Hawley.
