Learning through puppets

LIBERTY — Students in Barbara Sush’s kindergarten/first grade class at the White Sulphur Springs Primary School recently completed a unit on short stories, which involved their playing the parts as puppeteers.

Sush recently engaged her students in an integrated reading exercise with stories like “The Gingerbread Man,” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” “The Little Red Hen” and “The Three Little Pigs.” Students were given parts to play as puppeteers to bring the stories to life, using puppets to play the characters along with props.

The students learned about the different characters and the events, and then were given a problem with a beginning and an end and allowed to pick their own parts. Each group chose a student director to guide them.
