Ice Bowl winners score for
world hunger
PROMPTON — Approximately fifty disc golfers gathered
on the shores of Prompton Lake on Sunday, February 10, to participate
in the Fifth Annual Disc Golf Ice Bowl and to make donations to
the Honesdale Community Pantry. The disc golfers, who came from
as far north as Ithaca, NY and as far south as Newport News, VA,
enjoyed a windy but mild winter afternoon.
Joe Klosky of Lake Ariel fired a 55 to post the
best score of the day and win the pro division. Klosky edged Glenn
Travers of Newport News, VA by one stroke. The two had been deadlocked
throughout the match but when Travers bogied the 16th hole, Klosky
had the opening that he needed and he parred out to grab the victory.
Jon “Funky” Runkle, Tommy Rodgers, Todd Werts and
Larry Entz all tied at 59, but tRunkle won in a sudden death playoff
to claim the third place prize.
In the amateur open division, Jeff Pavlovich of
Waymart birdied two of the last three holes to card a 61 and pull
into a tie with Charlie Joseph of Honesdale. Pavlovich then won
the sudden death playoff to claim first place. Matt McFarland of
Coopersburg grabbed third with a 64, while local players Brad Meyers
and Matt Collins tied for fourth with 66.
Teen players Pack Sampson and Kyle Box battled
closely over the first nine holes with Sampson holding a narrow
three-stroke lead. But, on the back nine, Sampson began to find
the range with laser-guided drives and chain-eating putts to score
an impressive 65 and claim first. Box hung on grab second with a
75, while Steve Palmer took third with a 77 and Cody Sheridan grabbed
fourth with an 82.
Pete Victory of Honesdale rode the strength of
a consistent 30 on the front nine to card a 66 and seize victory
in the Masters Division. Mike Sharrow of Montoursville scored a
67 to take second, while Pete Ridd grabbed third with a 69 and Jack
Collins took fourth with a 72.
Ken Wiley of Liberty, NY bested John Miller in
the Grandmaster division 76-82. In the women’s division, Honesdale’s
Carla Engelbrecht won with an 84.
This year, disc golfers donated 350 lbs of food
and $220 to the Honesdale Community Pantry, the highest totals in
the five-year history of the Ice Bowl. The Prompton Ice Bowl was
one of several hundred Ice Bowls held nationally to fight hunger.
