MARLENE SMITH DOBELL
COCHECTON — Marlene Smith Dobell of Cochecton, a
registered nurse at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional
Medical Center in Harris, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at the
Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 45.
Daughter of the late Franklyn J. and Marie Kiegler
Smith, she was born in Bethel.
She was a member of the New York State Nurses Association.
Survivors include her husband, Timothy Dobell; a
daughter, Heather and a son, Adam, all at home; three brothers,
Andrew P. Smith and wife Linda of Cochecton, Franklyn R. Smith and
companion Patricia Collins of Rochester, and Matthew H. Smith and
wife Dena of Cochecton; two uncles, Charles Smith of Cochecton and
Louis Kiegler of Honesdale, PA; an aunt, Vera Ordnung of Honesdale,
PA; her father-in-law, John Jost of Livingston Manor; a sister-in-law,
Allison Dobell of Livingston Manor; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral
Home in Jeffersonville. Father Robert Nee, O.F.M. officiated. Burial
was in St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity
of one’s choice.
AGNES ISELBORN LAVIS
CALLICOON — Agnes Iselborn Lavis of Callicoon, a
retired bookkeeper in Germany, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at
home. She was 76.
Daughter of the late Friedrich and Helene Iselborn,
she was born in Germany. She was the widow of Arthur Lavis.
She was a member of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church
in Callicoon and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Cross
R.C. Church in Callicoon. Father Ignatius Smith officiated. Burial
was in the Holy Cross Section of the Callicoon Cemetery.

ROBERT W. NELSON, SR.
HAWLEY — Robert W. Nelson, Sr. of Hawley, a retired
general contractor in Barryville and an area resident for over 50
years, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital
in Honesdale. He was 85.
Son of Peter and Nannie Johnson Nelson, he was born
in New York City. He was the widower of Ruth Elizabeth Kerr who
died in 1980.
He was a member of the Greeley Volunteer Fire Department
for over 50 years; a member of the Elks Lodge in Port Jervis; a
former Town of Highland Constable; and a member of the Highland
Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife of three years, Marilyn
Hendershot Nelson, at home; two daughters, Mary Ann Gasko of Lake
Gaston, NC and Helen Jane Brown of Norfolk, VA; three sons, Peter
W. of Hawaii, Robert W. Jr. of Barryville, NY and John E. of E.
Stroudsburg; six stepchildren; a brother, Edward of Greeley; seven
grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Gray- Rasmussen Funeral Home
in Barryville, NY. The Rev. David Cramer officiated. Cremation took
place at the HG Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg. Burial will take
place at the convenience of the family.

DONA E. OWENS
HONESDALE — Dona E. Owens of Honesdale died unexpectedly
on Sunday, February 10, 2002 at home. She was 63.
Daughter of the late Dudley R. and Frances E. Burns
Hamilton, she was born in Altadena, CA. She was the widow of William
J. Owens who died in 1972.
She was a member of the Catholic Church.
A graveside prayer service will be held in the Spring
in Hillcrest Cemetery in Galilee at a time to be announced.
ERNEST R. SIMPSON
HAWLEY —- Ernest R. Simpson of Hawley, a retired
materials foreman for PP&L and a lifelong area resident, died
Sunday, February 17 in Hawley. He was 82.
Son of the late Lionel G. Simpson and Constance
Parsons, he was born in Greenwich, CT. He was the widower of Esther
L. Warner Simpson who died in 1999.
He was a member of the Cole Memorial Baptist Church
in Hawley and was a former deacon and a trustee at the church.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara A. Middaugh
of Hawley and Mary Lou Frisbie of Christiana; a brother, George
Simpson of Hawley; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, E. Richard and a brother,
Leslie.
Services were held at the Cole Memorial Baptist
Church in Hawley. The Rev. Robert L. Jones, pastor, officiated.
Burial was in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.

DORIS A. SLAIER
HONESDALE — Doris A. Slaier of Honesdale, formerly
of Hawley and Jersey City, NJ, a retired nurse at the Jersey City
Medical Center in Jersey City, NJ died Saturday, February 16, 2002
at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 80.
Daughter of the late Thomas Slaier and Tillie Eckbeck
Slaier, she was born in Hawley.
She graduated from Hawley High School and the Jersey
City Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of the Hawley
United Methodist Church and a former member of the Hawley Lioness
Club and the Hawley Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
Survivors include a brother, W. Wayne Slaier of
Honesdale; and several cousins.
Services were held at Teeters’s East Chapel in Hawley.
The Rev. Martin L.Cox, Jr., pastor of Hawley United Methodist Church,
officiated. Burial was in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.

AUSTIN SMITH
BARRYVILLE — Austin Smith of Barryville, a retired
machine operator for the Sullivan County Highway Department and
a lifelong area resident, died Friday, February 15, 2002 at Virtua
West Jersey Hospital in Marlton, NJ. He was 91.
Son of Edward and Mabel Austin Smith, he was born
in Barryville. He was the widower of Dorothy Kuen Smith.
He was the Town of Highland historian since 1945.
Survivors include his son, Dale and wife Patricia
of Medford, NJ; and a grandson, Kevin.
Cremation and funeral services took place at the
convenience of the family.

VINCENT THEYSHOHN
CALLICOON — Vincent Theysohn of Callicoon, a retired
switchman for the New York Telephone Company, died Sunday, February
10, 2002 at the Walnut Mountain Care Center in Liberty. He was 89.
Son of the late Arthur and Anna Keegan Theysohn,
he was born in New York City.
He was a member of Holy Cross Church in Callicoon
and the New York Telephone Pioneers of America.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Maguire Theysohn,
at home; two daughters, Margaret R. Wood and husband Major General
John of Alexandria, VA, and Anne M. Lennox Jr. and husband Lieutenant
General of West Point; five grandchildren, Captain Matthew J. Lennox,
Lieutenant Andrew J. Lennox, Jonathan W. Lennox, Anne Marie Wood
and Margaret Lee Wood.
