FRANKLIN GIBSON BRINKER
HAWLEY — Franklin Gibson Brinker of Hawley, a former
police detective in New York City, died Tuesday, January 23, 2002
at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 81.
Son of the late Franklin and Irene Sleven Brinker,
he was born in Manhattan, NY.
He was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic
Church in Hawley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Louise Strassle
Brinker; two sons, Bruce E. of Lake Ariel and Gary of Cape Coral,
FL; a daughter, Donna Frisbie of Lakeville; a brother, Warren of
Florida; a sister, Dorothy Dauenheimer of Milford; two grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was offered at Queen of Peace Roman
Catholic Church in Hawley. The Rev. Joseph P. Kutch, pastor of St.
Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in White Mills, officiated. Burial
was in Queen of Peace Cemetery in Hawley.

WARNER M. DEPUY
MILFORD — Warner M. Depuy of Milford, a former 28-year
Pike County commissioner and a lifelong area resident, died at home
Tuesday, December 31, 2001. He was 84.
Son of Ketchum Moses and Emily Warner Depuy, he
was born in Milford. He was the widower of Virginia Zaloom Depuy,
his wife of 42 years.
He was a graduate of Milford High School and Dartmouth
College, class of 1939. He was elected to the State House of Representatives
for four terms beginning in 1942, the youngest member of the legislature.
He also served as Deputy State Treasurer of Pennsylvania under Robert
Kent and Governor William Scranton, who then appointed him Secretary
of Revenue of Pennsylvania. In 1980 President Reagan appointed him
to the chairmanship of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, and
he served in that capacity for nine years under Presidents Reagan
and Bush.
He had formerly owned and operated a coal and feed
business in Port Jervis until 1966. He was a co-publisher and co-owner
of the local paper, the Pike County Dispatch, until it was sold
in 1988. He was president and chief executive officer of the First
National Bank of Pike County. He retired from the bank in 1996.
Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline Depuy
Lawler and Patricia Depuy Johnson; two sons, Warner K. and James
W.; and seven grandchildren.
Services were held at the First Presbyterian Church
of Milford. The Revs. Benjamin Willis and Gary Wilburn of the First
Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, CT officiated. Burial was in
the Milford Cemetery in Dingman Township.

CLARENCE E. BUNTING
DAMASCUS TOWNSHIP — Clarence E. Bunting of Damascus
Township, formerly of White Mills, a retired employee of the SJ
Bailey and Sons Furniture Company of Honesdale, died Sunday, January
20, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Scranton. He was 74.
Son of the late John and Alice Olver Bunting, he
was born in Albany, NY.
He attended the Calkins Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Anthony Bunting;
a brother, Ivan of Honesdale; nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be a graveside service this spring in
the Beach Lake Cemetery. Cremation took place at the Maple Hill
at Salem Crematory in Archbald.
KATHERINE L. CAMPFIELD
HAWLEY — Katherine L. Campfield of Hawley, a former
co-owner of Allan’s Ice Cream Store in Hawley, Honesdale and Waverly
and owner/operator of Katherine’s Fashionette in Hawley, died Monday,
January 21, 2002 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale.
She was 85.
Daughter of the late Byron and Myrtle Austin Lester,
she was born in Fortens. She was the widow of Allan Vincent Campfield.
She was a graduate and class president of Hawley
High School, Class of 1934. She was a founding member of the Hawley
Public Library and belonged to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary,
the Hawley Woman’s Club and the Traders Club, all of Hawley. She
was a member of the Hawley United Methodist Church and its Woman’s
Club, and the Hawley/Lake Wallenpaupack Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include two sons, Richard and wife Helen
and JB and wife Cathy, both of Hawley; a daughter, Karen Hendershot
and husband Robert; six grandchildren, Nicole and Lori Hendershot,
Archie and Richard Campfield, Lynne Miller and Andonia Murray; and
eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Allan Jr.
Private funeral services were held at the convenience
of the family. The Rev. Martin Cox, pastor of the Hawley United
Methodist Church, officiated.
LINDA JANE DANIELS HANSEN
HONESDALE — Linda Jane Daniels Hansen of Honesdale,
formerly of Hawley, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 3, 2002
in Honesdale. She was 51.
Daughter of Mark and Ema M. Comfort Daniels, she
was born in Trenton, NJ.
Survivors include five daughters, Paula Butts of
Greentown, Melissa Huffer of Walden, NY, Heide Burke of Salt Lake
City, UT, Nixie Burke and Margaret Hansen, both of Honesdale; a
son, Lee of Honesdale; four brothers, Robert Daniels of Hawley,
Richard Daniels of Simpson, Ronald Daniels of Scranton and Edward
Daniels of Honesdale; five grandchildren; nieces, nephews, aunts
and uncles.
Private burial was held at Green Gates Cemetery
in Hawley. Cremation took place at the H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg.
CHARLES R. HARTMANN
ELDRED — Charles R. Hartmann of Eldred, a retired
fireman for the New York City Fire Department and a 22-year area
resident, died Friday, January 25, 2002 at the Sullivan County Adult
Care Center in Liberty. He was 79.
Son of Henry and Anna Mitchel Hartmann, he was born
in Woodhaven, Queens.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World
War II. He was a member of the Tusten-Highland Post VFW and the
American Legion, both in Eldred, and St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church
in Shohola, PA.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth at home; a daughter,
Jill of Ashville, NC; four stepchildren; a sister, Loretta Woodruff
of Wappinger Falls; nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Ann’s
Roman Catholic Church in Shohola, PA. The Rev. David Cramer officiated.
Burial was in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Shohola, PA.

MARILYN A. KAEMPFE
MONTICELLO — Marilyn A. Kaempfe of Monticello, an
employee of various area banks and a longtime area resident, died
Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at the Seelig Division of the Catskill
Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 60.
Daughter of the late John and Ina Hickey Geran,
she was born in New York City.
She attended St. Peter’s Church in Monticello.
Survivors include her husband of 38-years, Ronald
Kaempfe, at home; two sons, Scott and wife Amy of Townsend, MA and
Craig and girlfriend, Christine DeSimone of Chesapeake, VA; two
brothers, Dennis Geran and wife Lee of Hockessin Hunt, DE, and John
Geran and wife Pat of Clarkston, MI; a sister-in-law, Carol Geran
of Kansas City, MO; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Peter’s Church in
Monticello. Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle
Hope.

ZITA I. KASPER
HAWLEY — Zita I. Kasper of Hawley, a retired employee
at the Union City Filament Company in Union City, NJ, died unexpectedly
on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at home. She was 77.
Daughter of the late Ignatz and Mary Kmetz Rembecky,
she was born in Dupont.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish
in Honesdale.
Survivors include her husband, Bernard Kasper.
A Memorial Mass was held in St. Mary Magdelene’s
Roman Catholic Church in Honesdale.
COURTNEY KELLY
MONGAUP VALLEY — Courtney Kelly of Mongaup Valley,
a retired employee of the New York Telephone Company and a longtime
area resident, died Friday, January 25, 2002 at home. He was 73.
Son of the late John and Iva Tompkins Kelly, he
was born in Fleischmanns.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America;
a member of the United Methodist Church of Mongaup Valley; and was
a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Kelly, at home;
two sons, David W. and wife Alice of Monticello and Larry A. and
wife Cheyenne of Mongaup Valley; a daughter, Linda Bosket and husband
John of Windsor; a brother, Robert of Lake Wales, FL; nine grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Sandy of New Britain,
CT; two stepchildren, Jimmy Kiefer of Monticello and Linda Helms
of Ladson, SC; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Paul F.
Services were held at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc.
Funeral Home in Monticello. The Rev. David Coon officiated. Cremation
took place at Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh.

BERNICE S. KUHN
HONESDALE — Bernice S. Kuhn of Honesdale, a retired
seamstress for the former Katz Underwear Company in Honesdale, died
Monday, January 21, 2001 in Wayne Memorial Hospital emergency room
in Honesdale. She was 94.
The daughter and last surviving member of the Frank
and Mabel Robinson Smith family, she was born at the family home
in Dyberry Township. She was the widow of John M. Kuhn.
Survivors include two sons, John F. and Louis, both
of Honesdale; a daughter, Kathleen “Kay” Jordan, RN of CA; two grandchildren,
Jeffrey and Jennifer Kuhn; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Harland Smith;
four sisters, Gladys and Frances Smith; Evelyn Schultz and Alberta
Theobald.
Private funeral services were held at the convenience
of the family.
ALPHONSE C. LIPINSKI
MAHWAH, NJ — Alphonse C. Lipinski of Mahwah, NJ,
formerly of Elmhurst, Queens, NY, an American Airlines employee
at J.F.K. Airport in Queens, NY, died Monday, January 21, 2002.
He was 83.
He was the widower of Veronica O’Neill Lipinski.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the Immaculate
Heart of Mary Church in Mahwah.
Survivors include three daughters, Joan Staab and
Janeann Lauzon, both of Mahwah and Rita Krom of Stony Point, NY;
two sons, Frank of Floral Park, NY and Timothy of Masbeth Queens,
NY; a brother, Dom Fisher; a sister, Ann Bernardi; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mahwah. Burial was at Calvary
Cemetery in Queens, NY.
CLINTON F. LONG
HORTONVILLE — Clinton F. “Red” Long of Hortonville,
a retired dairy farmer and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday,
January 22, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was
79.
Son of the late Alfred and Harriet Schaeffer Long,
he was born at the family farmhouse in Callicoon.
He was a member of the Sullivan County Extension
Service; Sullivan County Farm Bureau; Farm and Home Extension; and
a member of the Hortonville Volunteer Fire Department and was a
World War II U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, the former Grace Weiss
at home; a daughter, Nancy Long Sipple and husband Edward of Minn;
two sons, Chris and wife Betty of Callicoon and Philip and wife
Brenda of Callicoon; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren;
a brother, Robert of Hagamen; two sisters, Edna Wagner of Youngsville
and Betty Kulakosky of Oxford; and nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral
Home in Callicoon. The Rev. Alan Wachter officiated. Burial was
in Hortonville Cemetery in Hortonville.

DOROTHY NADLER
JEFFERSONVILLE — Dorothy Nadler of Jeffersonville,
a retired interior decorator formerly of Teaneck, NJ and recently
a resident at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe, died
Friday, January 18, 2002 at the Nursing Home. She was 101.
Daughter of the late Manuel and Bascia Hamburg Luria,
she was born in New Haven, CT.
She was employed as an artist for a leading greeting
card manufacturer and in the 1920’s had a needle work shop. She
wrote a column, “Dot’s Corner,” for the Sullivan County Democrat.
She authored “Reflections of Our Times,” and is listed in the 1986
edition of “Who’s Who of Authors and Poets.” She was a member of
the National American and International Poet Libraries.
She was a charter member of the Albert College of
Medicine and president for seven years of the women’s division of
the University of New York. She was a past vice president of the
Englewood, NJ Chapter of B’nai B’rith and served as a fund-raising
chairman.
She was a member of Achvah Shalom Synagogue in Jeffersonville
and a member of Temple Sinai in New Jersey.
Survivors include a son, Morton of Blacksburg, VA;
a daughter, Geraldine Gould of Fair Lawn, NJ; seven grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.

JAMES NICHOLS, JR.
VOORHEESVILLE — James Nichols Jr. of Voorheesville,
a former Callicoon resident and former 17-year employee of Peck’s
Market in Callicoon, died in a swimming accident on Saturday, January
19, 2002 while vacationing in Grand Cayman Island. He was 53.
Son of the late James and Nora Nichols, he was born
in Newark, NJ.
A graduate of Mansfield University in Pennsylvania,
he served as Peck’s president and CEO for a period of time. After
moving to Voorheesville he and his wife Elaine opened SuperValue
Foods. He was a member of the Voorheesville United Methodist Church,
the New Scotland Kiwanis Club, the Sons of the American Legion and
the Voorheesville Rod and Gun Club.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Dell’Armo Nichols,
at home; two daughters, Kjersti Nichols of Brooklyn and Kelsey Nichols
of Voorheesville; three sons, Jaret, Jordan and Tyler, all of Voorheesville;
four sisters, Penny Fields of IL, Vicki Beam of PA, Shirley Richa
of MD and Susan Best of NYS; two brothers, William of NC and John
of UT; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at St. Matthew’s Church in Voorheesville.

MARGIT SZENES
COCHECTON — Margit Szenes of Cochecton and New York
City died Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at Beth Israel Hospital in
New York City. She was 72.
Daughter of the late Gozsef and Rosaria Halipi,
she was born in Hungary.
Survivors include her husband, George Szenes, at
home; a son, Laslow of California and a grandson, Jason.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Cross
Church in Callicoon. Father Ignatius Smith officiated. Burial was
in the East Cochecton Cemetery in Cochecton.
