Bulldogs still undefeated

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Sullivan West girls basketball team continues to mow down its opponents—by big scores.

The Bulldogs roundly defeated the Tri-Valley Bears by a 64-37 score during their January 18 match up at Jeffersonville.

During the first quarter, it looked as though Tri-Valley might stay neck and neck with the undefeated Sullivan West. The score at the end of the first quarter was Bulldogs 15, Bears 12.

Tiffany Hauser  had 18 points in the first half, when the score read 33-20 in favor of the Bulldogs. Hauser scored a total of 24, for one of her highest scoring games.

But that wasn’t enough to please Bulldog coach Ron Bernhardt.

“We won all right, but we were very sloppy, missed a lot of shots,” he said.

One of the Bulldog’s best strategies is beginning to be apparent—the full-court press. They stole the ball eight or nine times. Since they have a strong bench, Bernhardt can afford to use the press, sending in five subs who appear as good as the starting five players.

And they used the fast break effectively, with Hauser clearing the board and shooting the ball down court to Aileen Semenetz, who had a number of easy lay-up.

Semenetz scored 13 points with five assists and Hauser had 12 rebounds. Seven of the players had four points or more, indicative of this team’s many able shooters.

“We did our best to stay up with them, but lost it in the third quarter with all those fast breaks,” said Bears coach Karen Surman.

“Every team is laying for us now that we’re still undefeated,” Bernhardt said.

Sullivan West’s overall record is 12 – 0; in the league they’re 6 – 0. Tri-Valley’s over-all record is 4 – 9; in the league they’re 3 – 3.
