HELEN BORTREE

HONESDALE — Helen Bortree of Honesdale, a retired examiner and night security officer for the former Katz Co., in Honesdale, died Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at home. She was 67.

Daughter of the late Lewis and Dorothy Woosman Corcoran, she was born in Scranton.

She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale, and graduated from Damascus High School in 1953.

Survivors include her husband, Buell Bortree, Jr.; four sons, Dan of Rileyville, Buddy of Honesdale, Brian of Oneida, NY and Rich of Shreveport, LA; a daughter, Kelly Snedeker of Kenoza Lake, NY; three brothers, Lewis Corcoran of Seeleyville; Bill Corcoran of Honesdale and Frank of Beach Lake; two sisters, Dottie Lane of Seeleyville and Ann Black of FL; 11 grandchildren; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Mark Terwilliger, pastor of the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale, officiated. Burial was in Union Cemetery in Equinunk.

FLORENCE B. STAHL CLARK

TAFTON — Florence B. Stahl Clark of Tafton, formerly of Greeley, died Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at home. She was 70.

Daughter of the late Joseph and Florence Rainforth Stahl, she was born in Brooklyn, NY. She was the widow of Raymond Clark.

She was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Hawley and attended St. Veronica’s Roman Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna R. Uhler and husband Edgar, and Tierney L. Ball and husband James, of Tafton; a brother, John Stahl of Flushing, NY; four grandchildren, Ashley, Christopher, Sierra and Emelia; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Joann Johnson.

A Mass was offered at Queen of Peace Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial was in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Shohola Twp., PA.

ANNA CLAYDEN

HONESDALE — Anna Clayden of Honesdale, a retired secretary for The Wall Street Journal and an area resident for over 40 years, died Monday, December 10, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 85.

Daughter of David and Anna M. Mary Clayden, she was born in New York City.

She was a member of St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church in Beach Lake; a member of the Beach Lake Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary; treasurer of the Beach Lake Cemetery; a member of the Wednesday prayer breakfast group of the Beach Lake United Methodist Church; and a member of the Senior Citizens Club of the Beach Lake United Methodist Church.

Survivors include many, many friends.

A Mass was offered at St. Bernard’s Church in Beach Lake. The Rev. Joseph P. Kutch officiated. Burial was in Beach Lake Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tusten Volunteer Ambulance in Narrowsburg, NY 12764, or to the Beach Lake Fire Department or St. Bernard’s Church, both of Beach Lake, PA 18405.

DOROTHY CERRONE DEUTSCH

GREENTOWN — Dorothy Cerrone Deutsch of Greentown, a 20-year area resident formerly of Boonton, NJ, died Thursday, December 6, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 66.

Daughter of the late James and Frances Homan Cerrone, she was born in Akron, OH.

She was a Roman Catholic.

Survivors include a son, Alan of Hawley and a grandson, Casey of Largo, FL.

A memorial service was held at Teeter’s East Chapel in Hawley. The Rev. Robert L. Jones, pastor of Cole Memorial Baptist Church, officiated. Cremation took place at the H. G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg.

ISABELLE GERRITY

HONESDALE — Isabelle Gerrity of Honesdale, a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 93.

Daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Cook Hopkins, she was born in Honesdale. She was the widow of Frederick Gerrity.

She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Honesdale.

Survivors include two sons, Frederick J. of Indian Orchard and Richard W. of Honesdale; five grandsons; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Blanche Viney, Mary Bayley and Amanda Forkel; a brother, John Hopkins; and a grandson.

Services were held at the Arthur A Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church officiated. Burial was in Indian Orchard Cemetery.

HELEN GIBBONS

HONESDALE — Helen Gibbons of Honesdale died Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 85.

Daughter of the late Arthur and Annie Cunningham Shephard, she was born in Kearney, NJ. She was the widow of John W. Gibbons.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Honesdale and the St. Catherine’s Guild Society.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur of North Arlington, NJ and Roger of White Mills; a daughter, Deborah Seedy of Sayreville, NJ; a sister, Alice Zorns of Kearney, NJ; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. F. Graham Cliff officiated. Cremation took place at the Maple Hill at Salem Crematory in Archbald.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ellen Memorial Health Care Center Memorial Fund.

WILLIAM C. HOEHLEIN

HAWLEY — William C. Hoehlein of Hawley, a retired carpenter for Con-Edison in the Bronx, NY, died Thursday, December 6, 2001at home. He was 79.

Son of William and Anna Hecht Hoehlein, he was born in Astoria, NY.

He was a member of St. John Neumann Church of Lord’s Valley. He was a member of the Blooming Grove Fire Department and was a World War II Army veteran.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Marjorie Leed and Eleanor Leed.

A memorial Mass was held in Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in Blooming Grove. The Rev. Gerald Hawley officiated. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

ROBERT ROSEMERGY

HAWLEY — Robert “Gig” Rosemergy, Jr. of Hawley, retired owner of Rosemergy Garage, died unexpectedly Sunday, December 16, 2001 at home. He was 71.

Son of Robert Rosemergy, Sr. and Carrie Krause Rosemergy, he was born in Mayfield. He was the widower of Joan D. Staite Rosemergy.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Hawley United Methodist Church; the Hawley Lodge #305 Free & Accepted Masons of Hawley; and the Honesdale Lodge #218 Free & Accepted Masons in Honesdale.

Survivors include a daughter, Jan Marie Hoadley of Beach Lake; a son, Charles R. “Chuck” Rosemergy of Hawley; a sister, C. Jane Quick of Hawley; four grandchildren, James, Jr., Jennifer, Amanda and Cole; and a great-grandson, Anthony.

Services were held at Teeters’ East Chapel in Hawley. The Rev. Martin Cox, Jr., pastor of Hawley United Methodist Church, and Rev. Theodore C. Muller, pastor of Visitation Hawley United Methodist Church, officiated. Cremation took place at H. G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg.

RALPH L. STRAFACE, SR.

LACKAWAXEN  — Ralph L. Straface, Sr. of Lackawaxen, a retired heavy equipment operator for the town of Harrison, NY, died Wednesday, December 12, 2001 in Allied Skills Nursing Center in Scranton. He was 74.

Son of the late Joseph and Gesomino Spizzero Straface, he was born in Harrison, NY.

He was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Hawley. He was a former captain of the Harrison, NY Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Felicia Giuliano; a daughter, Julie Markis of Lackawaxen; a son, Ralph, Jr. of Harrison, NY; three sisters, Rose Caparella of Harrison, NY, Anne Calandruccio of Harrrison, NY and Lena Dalto of Harrison, NY; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was offered in Queen of Peace Church in Hawley. The Rev William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

FRANK P. TRZECIAK

ELDRED — Frank P. Trzeciak of Eldred, a retired employee of the Ford Motor Company in Wixom, MI and a 17-year area resident, died Saturday, December 15, 2001 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 82.

He was born February 9, 1919 in Poland. He was the widower of Emillia Runge Trzeciak.

He was a member of St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Yulan. He was a World War II veteran of the Polish Navy and was a prisoner of war survivor of Auschwitz and Buchenwald.

Survivors include a son, Erwin of New York City; a stepdaughter, Margaret Vickery of Hazel Park, MI; two granddaughters, Alissa and Barbara; and two sisters in Australia.

A Mass of the Resurrection was offered at St. Anthony’s Church in Yulan. The Rev. Evan Greco officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

WILLARD G. WESTERVELT

COCHECTON — Willard G. Westervelt of Cochecton, owner of Willard’s Garage in Fosterdale and a lifetime area resident, died Friday, December 14, 2001 in Fishkill Health Care Center in Beacon. He was 93.

Son of George and Rose Fischer Westervelt, he was born June 18, 1908 in Fosterdale.

He was a member of the Fosterdale United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Ahneman Westervelt at the Fishkill Health Care Center; two daughters, Caroline Rose Halloran of Poughkeepsie and Ann Krauss of Virginia Beach, VA; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville. Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott. Burial was at Fosterdale Cemetery in Fosterdale.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cochecton Ambulance Corps or Lake Huntington Fire Department.

EVA YURGALAVICH WINN

HONESDALE — Eva Yurgalavich Winn of Honesdale, a retired hospital unit clerk and a 14-year area resident, died unexpectedly Thursday, December 6, 2001 at home. She was 80.

Daughter of Thomas and Helen Yurgalavich, she was born in Scranton. She was the widow of Frank P. Gursky and Kenneth Winn.

Survivors include three sons, Frank T. Gursky of Grapevine, TX, Peter P. Gursky of Milford, CT and Bernard Gursky of Honesdale; a daughter, Linda Vones of Lakeville; a brother, John Yurgalavich of Scranton; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by five sisters and three brothers.

Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Shelton, CT.
