Kickin’
some bass
By CHRIS CONROY
SMALLWOOD — After a season of fishing by more than
forty participants, the winners of the first annual Eldred Rod and
Gun Club Bass Tournament were announced on December 8 at Friend’s
in Smallwood.
Braving the evening’s snowfall, Paul Worzel, pictured
at right, who hooked the biggest fish, weighing in at six pounds,
three ounces, accepted his prize of $200 and a free mounting by
Neves Taxidermy. Second place winner Jerry Sommers was kept away
by the weather, but his six-pound bass drew many positive comments
and will net him $100 in prize money. Third place winner Cindy Wingert,
also pictured, rounded out the top three with her five-pound, twelve-ounce
fish and $75 in winnings.
The tri-state event wouldn’t have been possible
without help from club members and businesses that were involved,
said Darrell Horton, chair of the event and a four-year member of
the club. “Everyone helped out [so much] this year. We have more
shops that want to get involved [next year],” Horton said.
Founded nearly 20 years ago, the Eldred Rod and
Gun Club has 35 members and maintains a club house in Smallwood.
