More than
mouthwatering morsels
GLEN SPEY — The students at the George Ross Mackenzie
Elementary School began the holiday season by celebrating the annual
Thanksgiving feast, this year in its new, expanded format.
In previous years, the lunch prepared by the Mackenzie
cafeteria staff was available as a food choice only to those who
purchased their lunch. This year, however, the Highland Lion’s Club,
in partnership with the PTA, provided the funds that now enabled
all students and staff to participate in the meal.
Participants were also encouraged to donate a non-perishable
food item that was passed along to a local pantry.Christine Smetaniuk,
PTA coordinator of this event, was joined by parent volunteers in
helping the children prepare food, decorate the cafeteria, and serve
the food. Fourth and sixth graders made and shared dessert—cookies
and apple crisp—for the rest of the school. The first graders made
centerpieces for the tables. Other handmade decorations were supplied
by the second, third and fifth grade classes.
