The best offense is a good defense

HARRIS — The New York Safety Program, a defensive driving course, will be held on Saturday December 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC).

The course, sponsored by the CRMC Auxiliary, will be held in the boardroom on the 2nd floor of the Gorowitz Ambulatory Services Building at the Seelig Division in Harris.

Class instructors are certified by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, and the course is open to all licensed drivers.

Class size is limited and advance registration is required. The registration fee is $30. Participants should bring their lunch.

Sullivan Renaissance
winter forum at SCCC

LOCH SHELDRAKE — “Building on the Success of Sullivan Renaissance” is the subject of Sullivan First’s Sixth Annual Winter Forum on Saturday, December 1 at Sullivan County Community College.

The forum begins at 8:00 a.m. with registration and refreshments. The program will feature the annual Sullivan First Achievement Awards.

Speakers include members of this year’s winning Sullivan Renaissance projects in Grahamsville, Liberty, Jeffersonville and North Branch, who will share ideas and perspectives from their communities.

Sullivan Renaissance is a joint project of Sullivan First and the Beaverkill Foundation.

Arrive alive, drive 55

MONTICELLO — There will be a “55 Alive” driver safety program at the Hudson United Bank at 463 Broadway on December 5 and December 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The eight-hour course will be given in two four-hour sessions and will consist of discussion, lecture and video presentations.

Participants will receive a certificate that entitles them to apply for a discount on automobile insurance. This course is open to anyone 50 years of age or over, and class is limited to 35, so early registration is advised.

Holiday garland workshop offered

MIDDLETOWN — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County will be presenting a holiday garland workshop by Orange County Master Gardeners on December 6 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension, Community Campus, 1 Ashley Ave.

The cost is $30 per person and registration deadline is November 30. Clippers, gloves or scissors are not supplied.

Agriculture scholarships offered

REGIONAL — Students pursuing careers in agriculture are encouraged to apply for a scholarship from the Careers in Agriculture scholarship program, jointly sponsored by Agriliance, Land O’ Lakes Farmland Feed and Croplan Genetics. High school seniors from throughout the country, who will enroll in a two-year or four-year agronomy or livestock curriculum in the fall of 2002, are eligible to apply.

Fifty $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.

Applications are available from participating local cooperatives or on the Agriliance web site at www.agriliance.com in the careers section.

All applications must be returned via regular mail by March 1, 2002.

Winners will be notified by mail is May.

Academic Acheivement

The great debate!

MONTICELLO — On November 3, the Monticello High School Speech and Debate Team debated at Monticello.

Out of 250 debaters from as far away as Massachusetts, Monticello debaters Medum Choe and Antoinette Fouto placed second and third, respectively, in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate. In Junior Varsity Policy Debate, the team of Daniel Nutters and Eric Shulman came in third place. Nutters was second speaker overall.

Congratulations

BARRYVILLE — Douglas Sardone, son of Barbara Sardone of Barryville and a 2000 graduate of Eldred Central School, has been named to the Dean’s List for the summer semester at Paul Smith’s College, meaning that he has received a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Syracuse gets two of our own

WHITE LAKE — Terrance Fink of Callicoon and Marissa Peluso, of White Lake, are two of the approximately 2,800 new first-year and transfer students who have enrolled at Syracuse University. Fink is majoring in civil engineering in SU’s L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science. Peluso is majoring in SU’s School of Education majoring in inclusive elementary and special education.
