Fallsburg
edges Sullivan West
JEFFERSONVILLE — Fallsburg soccer coach Paul Marsden
said, “We came here to win, but Sullivan West (SW) didn’t stop playing
even with ten seconds on the clock.” Exciting is the best way to
describe the boys varsity soccer match with Sullivan West Friday
afternoon. The first half yielded no score for either team, but
during the second, Fallsburg scored the first goal at the 30-minute
mark, thanks to Jon Hinton, and SW’s Kevin Erlwein tied the score
with 17 minutes remaining on the clock. The game remained tied during
the first 10-minute overtime, and during the second, Bakery Ceesay
made the winning goal with six minutes remaining. Final score was
2 to 1. SW coach Howie Whitmore said, “We played the game hard the
whole time, and we’re just starting to be where were being competitive.”
Sullivan West plays Liberty, Chester, and Tri-Valley in up-coming
games. Whitmore said to the team, “If you played the way you did
today, we should have three victories … we have a legitimate shot.”
Coach Marsden said, “Sullivan West came to play undefeated, hat’s
off to Sullivan West.”
Sullivan

The girls won over Chester with a decisive score

Naumovitz, said, “The merging of athletes of the three campuses
has been a wonderful experience for all involved.
I’m looking forward to a successful season.”

were Cassy Busing, Kimberly Rosenberger and Dana Roeder. The five goals were scored by Kelly Hyde, Tracy Henry, Nellie Norden,
Heather Lander and Michelle Rhodes.
There was also a great assist by Vanessa Kline.

Roscoe
rolls over Eldred 34 – 0
By TOM KANE
ROSCOE — Brian Ballard, Roscoe’s starting quarterback,
sat on the sidelines last Sunday due to an injury and cheered on
his teammate guard Keith Buck who took over. Buck led the Blue Devils
to a rout over Eldred.
“Buck has played the position on the junior varsity
so he’s familiar with it,” said Roscoe coach Fred Ahart.
Acting like a veteran at the helm, Buck threw several
passes for a total of 40 yards, passing to Dave Eggleton for a touchdown
and for a pair of two-point plays.
Ballard, frustrated but at the same time elated
by the team’s victory and Buck’s success, was injured when a garbage
bag he was lifting had a piece of glass protruding. He needed several
staples on the cut, and it became infected.
He is expected to start next week.
On the first round of plays, Roscoe took the ball
from its own 30 to the Eldred 25 on a series of rushes when Buck
connected with Eggleton for the TD. He connected with Eggleton again
for a two-point play, making the score 8 – 0.
“We bounced back from our defeat at SullivanWest
last week,” Ahart said. “Sull-West is a strong team and they’re
going to be hard to beat.”
In the opening set of plays in the second quarter,
Buck took the team from its 45 down the field to score, with Brian
Ryder dashing 20 yards for the touchdown.
Ryder had 112 yards rushing, with Blue Devil halfback
Tim Hass amassing 66 rushing yards.
In the last quarter, Eldred held possession of
the ball for a long series of plays, going from its 25 to Roscoe’s
15 but couldn’t score.
Eldred’s Vinny Reilly caught a 40-yard pass from
Edlred’s quarterback Tony Mangiemelo, but a loss of 10 yards at
the next play stopped their momentum.
Eldred is 0 – 2 while Roscoe is 1 – 1.
