BEATRICE BAUER
CALLICOON – Beatrice Bauer of Callicoon, a homemaker
and life-long area resident, died Friday, September 14, 2001 at
Bethany Village in Bethany, PA. She was 95.
Daughter of the late Frank and Katherine Shuman
Simon, she was born June 12, 1906 in Fremont Center. She was the
widow of Raymond G. Bauer.
She was a member of Fremont Center Community Church.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, including
Verna Hess of Callicoon, Lucille Simon of Cochecton, Vivian Gjurich
of Winterhaven, FL and Diana Humiston of San Antonio, TX.
Services were held at the Fremont Center Community
Church. The Rev. James O’Rourke officiated. Burial was in the Fremont
Center Cemetery in Fremont Center.

ROBERT W. BIRDSALL
DELRAY BEACH, FL — Robert W. Birdsall of Abbey Delray
in Delray Beach, FL, formerly of Honesdale, PA, a retired accountant
for S.D. Leidesdorf and Co. in New York City and for ASCAP, died
September 6, 2001. He was 94.
Upon his retirement to Honesdale, he volunteered
at the American Red Cross.
Survivors include his sister, Margaret B. Brunn
and two nieces, Susan B. Puett and Barbara B. Hughes and their families.
PETER J. CARROLL JR.
STATEN ISLAND — Peter J. Carroll, Jr. of Staten
Island, a New York City Fireman for over 19 years working out of
Rescue Squad 1 in Brooklyn, died Tuesday, September 11, 2001 at
10:28 a.m. when the southern tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.
He was 42.
As he did every day of his life, on this most horrific
day he willingly did his job so that others would have a chance
to survive.
Survivors include his wife, Toni-Ann Carroll; two
stepchildren, Anthony and Dana of Staten Island; four children,
Nicole, Michael, Peter Jr. and Christopher, all of Staten Island;
his father, Peter J. Carroll Sr. of Neversink; a sister, Patricia
A. DaGata and husband Steve of Bethel; a brother, Kevin M. and wife
Chris of Neversink; two nephews, Steven and Anthony of Bethel; and
four nieces, Danielle of Bethel, and Candace, Brandie and Kaylee,
all of Neversink.
Services were held on Sunday, September 16, at Harmon
Home in Staten Island. Burial was in Blessed Sacrament in Staten
Island.
MARIE A. MICOCH CECH
HAWLEY – Marie A. Micoch Cech of Hawley died Friday,
September 14, 2001 in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She
was 76.
Daughter of the late Joseph Micoch, she was born
in Olomovc, Czechoslovakia. She was the widow of George Cech.
She was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic
Church in Hawley.
Survivors include a daughter, Sylvia Redmann of
Ogdensburg, NJ; two sons, George of Endicott, NY and Peter of Rochester,
NY; and eight grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered at Queen of Peace Church
in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial
was in the parish cemetery

DORA DAVIS
MONTICELLO — Dora Davis of Monticello died Monday,
September 10, 2001 at home.
Daughter of Harry and Rose Satter, she was born
in Poland. She was the widow of Harry Davis.
Survivors include a son, Edward and wife Georgette
of California; two daughters, Phyllis Kaufman and husband Norman
of Monticello and Noreen Sperling and husband Monte of Jericho,
Long Island; nine grandchildren, Steven and wife Lois Kaufman, Robin
Epstein and husband Martin, Neil and wife Jackie Kaufman, Rhonda
and husband Jonathan Golub, Mitchell and wife Diane Davis, Penny
Davis, Alicia Traktman, Laramie and husband Craig Snyder, Dayna
and husband Jonathan Freedman; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services were held in Gutterman’s Funeral Home in
Woodbury, LI. Burial was in Mt. Judah Cemetery in Ridgewood.

SR. M. RENE FLEDERBACH
DALLAS, TX — Sr. M. Rene Flederbach, RSM, a member
of the Dallas regional community of the Sisters of Mercy of the
Americas, died Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at Mercy Center in Dallas.
She was 83.
Daughter of the late William and Mabel P. Burkhouse
Flederbach, she was born September 14, 1918 in Honesdale.
She was a 1936 graduate of Honesdale Catholic High
School, earned a bachelor’s degree in education from College Misericordia
and received a certificate in religious education from the Diocese
of Scranton. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1943
and professed her vows on March 12, 1946. She taught in elementary
schools in the dioceses of Allentown, Harrisburg, Scranton and Rockville
Center, NY for 44 years. From 1990 to 1994 she served on the staff
of Catherine McAuley Center in Scranton. She moved to Mercy Center
in August 1944 where she served on the staff of Mercy Institute
of Educational Development, the Mercy Center Gift Shop and with
the Prayer Ministry.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Francis and
Robert; and three sisters, Gertrude Horst, Mildred Shute and Virginia
Batten.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, September
7 in Mercy Center’s Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Burial was in Mount
Olivet Cemetery in Carverton.

LUCILLE ANN FOSTER
HAWLEY — Lucille Ann Koch Foster, a former secretary
for Waymart Knitwear and a 38-year Hawley resident, died at home
Tuesday, August 28, 2001. She was 77.
Daughter of the late Louis Koch and Caroline Thelse
Koch, she was born in Scranton. She was the widow of Robert Foster.
She was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic
Church in Hawley.
Survivors include a son, Richard of Hawley; three
granddaughters; a great-grandson; a great-granddaughter; a sister,
Elinor Doherty of Scranton; a brother, Louis Koch of Wilmington,
DE; a niece and a nephew.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Amelia Reinseth
and Marion Prestwood.
A Funeral Mass was offered at Queen of Peace Church
in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial
was in Dunmore Cemetery in Dunmore, PA.

ANGELO A. MIRABILE
COCHECTON – Angelo A. Mirabile of Cochecton, a retired
tree surgeon for the Department of Parks in New York City and a
32-year area resident, died Thursday, September 13, 2001 at the
Grover M. Hermann Division of Community General Hospital in Callicoon.
He was 75.
Son of Joseph and Erma Linda Mele Mirabile, he was
born October 11, 1925 in New York, NY.
Survivors include his wife, Norma, at home; two
sons, Angelo of Whitinsville, MA and Wayne of Ormond Beach, FL;
a brother, Peter of the Bronx; three grandchildren, Jordan and Nikki
of Ormond Beach, FL and Alyssa Dawn of Whitinsville, MA; nieces
and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sons, Warren Paul and
Alfred Peter.
Private services were held at the convenience of
the family.

MARGARET F. MURPHY
CALLICOON — Margaret F. “Peggy” Murphy of Callicoon,
a homemaker, formerly of Long Eddy, died Thursday, September 13,
2001 at the Grover M. Hermann Division of Community General Hospital
in Callicoon. She was 85.
Daughter of the late Joseph L. and Viola Mae Frye
Ickes, she was born September 18, 1915 in Roaring Springs, PA. She
was the widow of Thomas Murphy.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the
Allen Milk Memorial Post No. 7276, Veterans of Foreign Wars and
St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, both in Long Eddy.
Survivors include nine children, Thomas and John,
both of Callicoon, Gerald of Jeffersonville, Doti Balanger of Selbyville,
DE, Richard Delozier of California, Edgar Delozier of Ohio, Anna
Southern of Kansas, Viola Bettwy and Theda Prough, both of Altoona,
PA; a brother, Joseph Ickes of Holidayburg, PA; 23 grandchildren;
28 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; nieces
and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Patrick’s
Church in Long Eddy. The Rev. Ignatius Smith, O.F.M., officiated.
Burial was in the parish cemetery.

HECTOR I. RIVERA
SOUTH FALLSBURG — Hector I. Rivera of South Fallsburg,
a retired maintenance man for Crystal Run and a long-time area resident,
died Sunday, September 9, 2001 at the Seelig Division of Community
General Hospital in Harris. He was 53.
Son of the late Narino and Carmen Vasquez Rivera,
he was born August 10, 1948 in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Rivera of Jeffersonville;
a daughter, Carmen Figueroa and husband Ed of Jeffersonville; two
sons, David and wife Becky of South Fallsburg and Richie of Jeffersonville;
three grandchildren; brothers, nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Aloysius
Church in Livingston Manor. The Rev. Alfred Croke officiated. Burial
was in the parish cemetery.
MARY E. WARD
MONTICELLO — Mary E. Ward of Monticello, a 35-year
area resident and a 33-year custodian at the Monticello Central
Schools from which she was to retire in December, died Tuesday,
September 11, 2001 at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital
in Harris. She was 64.
Daughter of the late Willie and Allie Gee Salsbury
Crandell, she was born January 2, 1937 in Marin County, North Carolina.
She was a member of the Little Grove Holiness Church
in Woodridge.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Thomas E. Ward
Sr., pastor of the Little Grove Holiness Church, at home; four sons,
Thomas E. Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, Kirby Leon of Austin, GA, Kenny
Alton of Raleigh, NC and Robert L. of New York City; two daughters,
Helen Patrick of Rosedale and Carolyn Jean Merchant of Loch Sheldrake;
five brothers, Lee Vernon Crandell of Washington, NC, Alander Crandell,
Gene Crandell and Johnny Crandell, all of Monticello and Lonnie
Crandell of Woodridge; five sisters, Mary Magdalene Godley, Hazel
Williams, Shirley Crandell, Glenda Jackson and Barbara Valle, all
of Monticello; 25 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a godson,
Renald Buck; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Willie Crandell
Jr. and Grover Lee; and two sisters, Allie Mae Barber and Annie
Edwards.
Services were held at King’s Chapel in Monticello.
Bishop Leon Williams officiated. Burial was in Rock Ridge Cemetery
in Monticello.
