Show highlights Native American art and artifacts

By TOM KANE

LAKE HUNTINGTON — The sacred myths of American Indians of the Southwest will be depicted in the art of Marcyle Wallman at the Nutshell Art Gallery on Route 52.

The show, “Sacred Myths: Nature and Spirituality,” will run September 21 through September 25, with a gala reception scheduled at the Lake Huntington gallery from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 22.

Although Wallman was born and raised in southern Texas, she’s part Native American through her great grandmother, a Cherokee whose Indian name was Sabra Prickly Pear.

“She would tell me stories of her people’s legends, beliefs and myths,” Wallman said. “These stories have stayed with me and influenced my art in so many ways.”

Wallman has shown nationally at the People’s Gallery in Soho, the Amber Palette in New York City, the Spectrum Gallery in Westhampton and the McClarry Gallery in Santa Fe, NM.

Wallman will soon be opening her own gallery called Sweet River Studio that will feature her art and collectibles and specialty clothing.
