Meyer's House Hints by Robert A. Meyer, P.E.

Fall Check List

As we transition from summer into fall it’s a good idea to go through the various aspects of your house and make sure that you’re ready for winter.

Beginning with the house itself, you’ll want to be sure that your heating system has been serviced and is ready for use. You’ll also want be sure your heating fuel supply is set.

You should also check over the storm windows (if you use them), storm doors, etc. to make sure that everything is clean, painted and ready for installation. If there are unheated areas of the house that you infrequently access (such as attics),  you might consider closing and insulating them to avoid drafts.

Fall is also the time of transition in ventilating your house. As previously discussed, keeping the windows closed and shades or drapes drawn during the heat of the day and opening the windows in the evening to allow the cool evening breezes in helps to condition the house for comfort during the summer. Obviously the opposite approach is what’s needed during the late fall and winter. During these times you’ll probably have shades and drapes open during the warmer part of the day to allow solar gain through the windows. At night you’ll want to draw the shades and blinds and make sure the windows are closed to preserve the heat gained during the day.

Outside your home you’ll want to complete the fall yard work. Any winter preparations of flower beds, plants, shrubs, and lawns should be done.

You’ll also want to check that the drainage areas around your house are free of leaves and other accumulations. Make sure that the roof, gutters and downspouts are all clear and in good operating condition. Make sure your driveway surfaces are sealed and the walkways are ready for winter.

In addition, if you use equipment for snow removal, you’ll want to have it serviced and ready for the task ahead.

By starting early, the preparation for winter will be less hectic and more enjoyable—at least that is what I keep telling myself!
