At the September 13 Town of Bethel Board meeting, Erma LaMarr was presented with a plaque recognizing the dedication her and her late husband showed in restoring and maintaining the history of the town. Together they ensured the survival of the town’s first synagogue, which is now listed on the national register of historic places. Bethel in brief

By CHRIS CONROY

BETHEL — At the September 13 Town of Bethel Board meeting, the board:

  • Received a copy of correspondence originally sent to Sullivan County Commissioner of Public Works Pete Lilholt regarding recent accidents at the intersection of Rt. 17B and Airport Road. It resolved to send its own letter voicing feelings on the need for more signage before the hill to let motorist know they will need to stop.
  • Announced that the ongoing fight with the Monticello Central School Board regarding Smallwood bus routes had been resolved. On one side of Smallwood, Lafayette Street will be made one way, and all other roads will be widened as much as possible including West Oak Street, which will be paved two feet wider than it currently is. Highway Superintendent Dick Yeomans estimates that the work will be completed in about three weeks. Once work is completed, the bus routes from two years ago will be followed.
  • Resolved to place two old town vehicles in the county auction on October 22 in Barryville.
  • Heard concerns from White Lake/Kauneonga Lake residents regarding the growth of European milfoil, a non-indigenous aquatic plant known for choking waterways through its excessive growth. The board will look into non-chemical ways of dealing with the plant to keep the town’s waterways clear of the nuisance.
  • Resolved at the request of the highway department to raise the road repair deposit required of contractors who dig up town roads from $200 to $500.
  • Scheduled the next town board meeting as a joint meeting with the planning board in order to be addressed by GF Entertainment regarding the final environmental action plan for the proposed performing arts center. The meeting will take place on September 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the town justice court.
