L. JOSEPH “JOE” FRANKLIN

HONESDALE — L. Joseph “Joe” Franklin of Honesdale, a retired employee of Honor Brand Feeds and the Katz Underwear Company of Honesdale, died Friday, August 31, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 75.

Son of the late Leon and Christine Petersen Franklin, he was born in Beach Lake.

He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Honesdale. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, as a member of the Seabees in Okinowa.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Helen E. Daniels Franklin; a sister, Evelyn Weber of Honesdale; a brother, Eugene of South Daytona, FL; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Walter, Cyrus and Benjamin; and a sister, Edith Warring.

A private service was held at the convenience of the family. Internment was in Indian Orchard Cemetery.

ANN VASISKO HONIGMAN

HAWLEY — Ann Vasisko Honigman of Hawley, a housewife, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, died Friday, August 31, 2001 in Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale.

Daughter of the late John and Helen Hakas Vasisko, she was born in Dunmore. She was the widow of Joseph J. Honigman.

She was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Hawley.

Survivors include two sisters, Helen D’Andrea of Hawley and Pauline Pellet of Gaithersburg, MD; four brothers, Michael of Ashland, VA, Henry of Hawley, Vincent of Endicott, NY and Robert of Delhi, NY; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers, John, George, Joseph and Stephen; and a sister, Mary.

Services were held at Queen of Peace Church in Hawley. The Reverand William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the Parish Cemetery.

FRANCIS B. “FRANK” JACKSON

HONESDALE — Francis B. “Frank” Jackson of Honesdale, a retired dairy farmer and former owner of Jackson’s Gas and Convenience Store on Fair Avenue in Honesdale, died Saturday, September 1, 2001 at the Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. He was 94.

Son of the Benjamin W. and Evelyn E. Hatler, he was born in Hollisterville. He was the widower of Blanche E. Hartman Jackson.

He was a member of the Smith Hill United Methodist Church. In his later years he did caning and furniture restoration.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Histed of Girdland; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Floyd and Eugene; and four sisters, Helen Shaffer, Mildred Stephens, Mamie and Carrie Jackson.

Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Reverend Paul McCauley of the Smith Hill United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Smith Hill United Methodist Church.

PAUL M. KLEIN

BEACH LAKE – Paul M. Klein, an administrator in the computer industry and residents of the area since 1976, died on Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 54.

Son of the late Al Klein and Bess Cohen Klein, he was born in Mount Vernon, NY, on December 29, 1946.

He was working on a Customer Satisfaction Program before taking ill.

Survivors include his wife, Carolee Tice Klein; a son, Matthew, at home; a mother-in-law, Catherine Tice of Beach Lake; two brothers, Mark of California and Edward in West Virginia.

As per his request, funeral services will be held at the family’s convenience. There will be no public service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tusten Ambulance Service of Narrowsburg, NY, or the Beach Lake Fire Department, Beach Lake, PA.

JOSEPHINE AYOOB LUTFY

MILFORD — Josephine Ayoob Lutfy of Milford, former owner and operator with her husband of the County Fair Gift Shop in Milford, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at Belle Reve Senior Living Center in Milford. She was 94.

Daughter of the late Richard and Sophie Ayoob, she was born July 24, 1907 in Brooklyn, NY. She was the widow of Fred Joseph Lufty.

Survivors include three sons, Robert of San Francisco, CA, Richard and Gary, both of Milford; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Resurrection was offered at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Milford. The Reverend Gerald Mullally officiated. Burial was in Milford Cemetery in Dingmans Township.

MICHAEL G. MANGIN

HONESDALE — Michael G. Mangin of Honesdale, a former mechanic for Wayne County Ford, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at Community Medical Center in Scranton. He was 50.

Son of the late Harold Arthur Winters and Mary Agnes Mangin, he was born in Brooklyn, NY.

He served in the U.S. Navy during peacetime in the 1970s. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lonsiak Mangin; three sons, John Jones of Bloomsburg, NY, Craig Lonsiak and Michael Mangin, both of Honesdale; four daughters, Mary Kay Jones of Kingston, NY, Kristin Lonsiak, Laurie Slater, Sckhy “Sky” Mangin, all of Honesdale; a brother, Wayne Winter of Beach Lake; a sister, Geraldine Memmelaer of Walden, NY; an aunt, Dorothy McGee of Beach Lake Methodist Home; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Reverend Albert A. Chaffee, pastor, First Presbyterian Church in Honesdale, officiated. Burial was in Indian Orchard Cemetery in Texas Township.

JAMES E. MCNUTT

MONTICELLO — James E. McNutt of Monticello, a retired sergeant and 20-year employee of the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, a security officer for Granite Associates in Liberty and a longtime area resident, died Sunday, September 2, 2001 in St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City. He was 71.

Son of Charles McNutt and the late Rhoda Wadsworth McNutt, he was born May 13, 1930 in Lemont Furnace, PA.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran; a member of the American Legion Post in Liberty and The Tin Can Sailors; past president of the Sheriff’s Unit and County Local CSEA, a retiree of CSEA; a member of Sullivan County Shields; the NY Retired Police Association; the International Association for Identification; the Sullivan County Sheriff’s PBA; the Liberty Elks Lodge #1545; Sons of Norway; AARP and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife, Carola Andersen Porter McNutt, at home; two sons, James Ronald of Texas and Michael and fiancée, Jackie of Kenoza Lake; three daughters, Jan Koester and husband, Chris of Parksville, Mary Beth McNutt and fiancé Jody of Jacksonville, FL and Ann-Marie Porter Foss and husband Brian of Monticello; his father of Canton, OH; three sisters, Geraldine Means, Marion Grimes and Lucinda Mayhew, all of Canton, OH; five grandchildren, Robert Coleman, Jaymi, Michelle and Steven McNutt and Kyle Foss; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Dale, George William and Harry; and a sister, Shirley Lemon.

Services were held at the Monticello United Methodist Church in Monticello. The Reverend Gene Smith officiated. Burial was in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

HARRIET M. MURPHY

WASHINGTON, DC — Harriet M. (“Happy”) Murphy of Washington, DC, formerly of Hawley, PA, a former teacher in the District of Columbia public schools and later supervisor of instruction in elementary schools throughout the city, died Thursday, September 6, 2001 at home. She was 74.

Daughter of George W. and Harriet M. McAndrew Murphy, she was born December 2, 1926 in Hawley, PA.

She graduated from Wilson Teachers College in Fredericksburg, VA with a Bachelor of Science degree. She taught in the District of Columbia public schools and subsequently became a supervisor of student teachers. In 1962 she was selected by the National Education Association to supervise the establishment of an English language department in Kenya, East Africa. That program, sponsored by the Agency for International Development, was designed to permit Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of Kenya, to carry out his program to establish English as the national language of that country.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the National Education Association and participated in the SOME program. She was an active member of the Christ Child Society of Washington. She was also a Eucharistic Minster at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Survivors include a brother, George W. Jr.; nine nephews and nieces and 15 grandnieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at the Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church Cemetery in Hawley.

LOUIE CONSTANCE NORRIS

MONTICELLO — Louie Constance (Connie) Norris of Monticello and New Port Richey, FL, a retired AT&T supervisor and trainer of new operators for 30 years at the Monticello office, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at home. She was 76.

Daughter of Oliver H. and Jessie Davis Mearns, she was born June 6, 1925 in Nelson, NE.

She was raised on her parent’s farm in the Bostwick, NE area and later attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. In 1947 she married and relocated to Sullivan County where she spent the remainder of her life with a winter residence in New Port Richey, FL. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bailey-Richman Post of the VFW in Monticello. She was a lifelong member of the Covenanter Church in Beulah, NE and a longtime member of the White Lake Reformed Presbyterian (Covenanter) Church. She was a 50-year member of the Women’s Missionary Society.

Survivors include her husband, Paul E. Norris of Monticello and New Port Richey, FL; a son, Robert D. of Forestburgh; a daughter, Carol P. Furchak, Jr. and husband Edward of Monticello; a granddaughter, Jennifer S. Shalmah and husband Al of Rock Hill; a grandson, Jason P. Furchak and fiancé January Blaisdell of Benton, ME; a niece and a nephew; two great-nephews; cousins, friends and her church family.

She was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Mearns.

Services took place at the White Lake Reformed Presbyterian Church in White Lake. The Reverend David Coon officiated. Burial was in Stewart Cemetery in Kauneonga Lake.
