County population growth patterns
MONTICELLO — According to recently released US
Census figures, Sullivan County population growth is pushing east
to west.
The total county population in the 2000 census
was 73,966, up 6.77% since the 1990 census.
However, Sullivan registered its greatest rate
of growth in easterly and southerly towns, while more northern and
westerly towns either remained static or lost population.
Population
in the fifteen towns and the changes since 1990 include: Bethel,
4,362 (18.1%), Callicoon, 3,052 (.8%), Cochecton 1,328 (.7%), Delaware
2,719 (3.2%), Fallsburg, 12,234 (6.8%), Forestburgh, 833 (35.6%),
Fremont, 1,391 (4.4%), Highland 2,404 (11.9%), Liberty 9,632 (-1.9%),
Lumberland, 1,939 (36%), Mamakating 11,002 (12.3%), Neversink, 3,553
(20.3%), Rockland, 3,913(-4.4%), Thompson, 14,189 (3.4%), and Tusten,
1,415 (11.3%).
