MILDRED BARGFREDE
YOUNGSVILLE — Mildred Bargfrede of Youngsville,
a homemaker and lifelong area resident, died Friday, August 17,
2001 at Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 73.
Daughter of Frank J. and Helen Hemmer Eagin, she
was born June 5, 1928 in Youngsville. She was the widow of John.
She was a member of the Youngsville Fire Department
Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Community Reformed Church of
Youngsville.
Survivors include three daughters, Elaine B. Flaxer
and husband Joel of Jane Lew, WV, Kathy B. Quinlass and husband
Michael of Youngsville and June B. Tegeler of Jeffersonville; four
grandchildren, Daniel L. Flaxer of New Bern, NC, Jennifer Lynne
and Kaitlyn Elaine Quinlass, both of Youngsville, and John William
Tegeler of Jeffersonville; a brother-in-law, Fred LeRoy of Youngsville;
nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy LeRoy;
a brother, Raymond F. Eagin; and a son-in-law, Thomas F. Tegeler.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral
Home in Jeffersonville. Entombment was in the family mausoleum in
Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack.

ROBERTA A. BRUNING
HAWLEY — Roberta A. Bruning, a housecleaner and
lifelong area resident, died Monday, August 27, 2001 at Wayne Memorial
Hospital in Honesdale. She was 69.
The daughter of Joseph and Edna Tyler Wood, she
was born on August 18, 1932 in Milanville, PA.
Survivors include three children, Linda Knecht and
husband Fritz of Narrowsburg, NY, Ruth Dexheimer of Waymart and
Robert Bruning and wife Karen of Bainbridge, NY; two brothers, Donald
Wood of Honesdale, and Keith and wife Shirley of Welcome Lake; nine
grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Douglas; and two sisters,
Lois Sobolak and Alma Nichols.
There will be no funeral services or visiting hours.
Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory, Endicott, NY.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity
of one’s choice.
OLIVE H. DeGROAT
HAWLEY — Olive H. DeGroat of Hawley, a housewife,
died August 23, 2001 at the Quarryville Retirement Community in
Quarryville, PA. She was 81.
She was the daughter of the late Harry DeGroat and
Nellie Major. She was the widow of Arthur.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary
and the Eckweiler-DeGroat-Hazer Post in Paupack.
Survivors include a son, Edwin A. of Hawley; two
daughters, Crystal Slininger of Strausburg and Doreen Kos of Jersey
Shore; a sister, Lois Flood of Matamoras; four grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services were held in Teeter’s East Chapel in Hawley.
The Rev. Douglas Rhine, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the Green
Gates Cemetery in Hawley.
ROBERT P. DEVINE
NEWARK, DE — Robert P. Devine of Newark, DE, a former
manager of the Robbins and Clark Hardware Store in Delaware for
many years, died Monday, August 13, 2001 at Christiana Hospital
in Delaware.
Son of the late Joseph and Catherine Scheller Devine,
he was born in Scranton.
He was a graduate of South Catholic High School,
where he was a Catholic League All-Star in baseball, basketball
and football; was a Scranton Times Athlete of the Week in football
during his senior year; and earned an associate degree in Business
Management from Goldey Beacon College in Delaware. He served in
the Army as a payroll specialist and medic during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen and Deborah,
both of Newark, DE; two brothers, John of Poughkeepsie, NY and Paul
of Exeter; eight sisters, Dorothy Czartowski and Claire Najmulski,
both of Barefoot Bay, FL, Catherine Rondomanski and Lois Conway,
both of Scranton, Elaine and Betty Donovan, both of Lancaster, Margie
Garbolino of Hawley and Gina Moore of New Castle, DE; three grandchildren;
nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph.
The funeral was held on August 17, in Delaware.
Burial was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
LUCILLE E. FREEMAN
MONTICELLO — Lucille Freeman of Monticello, groundskeeper
for the Town of Thompson at Holiday Mountain Ski Area, and a 43-year
resident of the area, died Sunday, August 19, 2001 at Community
General Hospital in Harris. She was 63.
Daughter of the late Lawrence and Edna Borge Edwards,
she was born March 3, 1938 in Mobile, AL. She was the widow of Lloyd.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of
Monticello.
Survivors include three sons, Warren Dumas and wife
Lucille, Al Dumas and wife Mary, and Jamil, all of Monticello; four
daughters, Beverly Edwards of Hilton Head Island, SC, Deborah Edwards
of Tuscaloosa, AL, Vanessa Dumas-Davis and husband Philip of Jonesboro,
GA and Sonia Dumas of Monticello; three brothers, Lawrence Edwards
and Roosevelt James, both of Mobile, AL and Horace Hatchet of WV;
five sisters, Martha Law, Bernice Edwards, Mary Williams, Florine
Allen and Alfreda Lee, all of Mobile, AL; four brothers-in-law;
20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, aunts,
uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Willie and
Emanuel Edwards; and a sister, Vera Watts.
Services were held at the First Baptist Church in
Monticello. The Rev. Mary Alli officiated. Burial was in Rock Ridge
Cemetery in Monticello.
ANNA MAE GITCH GARDAS
HONESDALE — Anna Mae Gitch Gardas of Honesdale,
a housewife, died Monday, August 20, 2001 at the Wayne Memorial
Hospital in Honesdale. She was 87.
Daughter of the late John and Mary Valko Gitch,
she was born July 24, 1914 in Shadyside, NJ. She was the widow of
John Anthony.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish
in Honesdale. She devoted the early part of her life to helping
care for her sister and brothers and other family members, and helped
her husband in his business.
Survivors include a son, Ronald and wife Veronica
of Honesdale; two daughters, Joanne Weigand of Piscataway, NJ and
Florence Carmody of Honesdale; two brothers, George Gitch of White
House Station, NJ and Joseph Gitch of Essex, PA; four sisters, Mary
Gallick of Simpson, Helen Gregory of Liberty, NY, Josephine McNeil
of Georgia and Agnes Meka of Jessup; a sister-in-law, Rose Gitch
of Honesdale; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, John and
Steven who were killed in World War II and Charles Gitch; two sisters,
Celia and Rose; a son-in-law, William Weigand and a grandson, Michael
Weigand.
A memorial Mass was celebrated at St. John the Evangelist
Church in Honesdale on August 25, 2001. Burial was in St. Mary Magdalen’s
Cemetery.

MADELINE HINKLEY
CALLICOON — Madeline Hinkley, a homemaker and lifelong
area resident, died Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Community General
Hospital in Callicoon. She was 88.
Daughter of William and Sarah Cochrane Davis, she
was born May 22, 1913 in Cooks Falls. She was the widow of William.
She was a member of Parksville United Methodist
Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith Gardner of
White Sulphur Springs; a sister, Isabelle Forker of Port Jervis;
three granddaughters, Robin Lewis of Jeffersonville, Amy Davis and
Tara Gardner, both of White Sulphur Springs; nieces and nephews.
Services were officiated by the Rev. Betty Beach.
Burial was held August 18, 2001 in Laurel Hill Cemetery in White
Sulphur Springs.
JOHN F. IGOE
NARROWSBURG — John F. Igoe of Narrowsburg, a retired
accountant for the City of New York and a longtime area resident,
died Thursday, August 23, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale,
PA. He was 97.
Son of Martin and Hannah Lenihan Igoe, he was born
August 29, 1903 in Brooklyn, NY.
Survivors include five daughters, Barbara Paparella
of Beach Lake, PA, Kathleen Hector of Narrowsburg, Elizabeth Donnellan
of Sloatsburg, Virginia Johnson of Wappingers Falls and Monica Meunier
of Narrowsburg; 24 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Francis
Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg. The Rev. Sennen SanFratello
officiated. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

Volunteer Ambulance or to St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church,
both of Narrowsburg, NY 12764.
EUGENE R. KELLY
HONESDALE — Eugene R. Kelly of Honesdale, formerly
of Ridgewood, Queens, NY, a retired employee of Greenwald Industries
in Queens, NY, died Monday, August 20, 2001 at home. He was 67.
Son of Muriel Kelly and the late Edward Kelly, he
was born April 7, 1934 in Queens, NY.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy; three sons, Eugene
II, Kevin and John; a sister-in-law, Angelina (Dolly) Venneri; two
brothers, Arthur and Edward; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to The American
Diabetes Association.
ROBERT KENDALL, JR.
MONTICELLO — Robert Kendall, Jr. of Monticello,
a self-employed businessman who specialized in pole line construction
and a 54-year area resident, died Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at
the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital. He was 79.
Son of the late Robert E. and Rena E. Keach Kendall,
he was born November 13, 1921 in Randolph, VT.
He was a World War II veteran of the US Army; a
past commander of the Bailey-Richmond Post #9588 Veterans of Foreign
Wars; and a member of BPOE Lodge #1544, both in Monticello.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn M. Flint Kendall;
two sons, Donald and wife Barbara of Billings, MO and Duane and
wife Elizabeth of Monticello; a daughter, Dale Clukies and husband
Gerald Goldman of Binghamton; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and
Roland.
Services were private. Burial was in the Pleasant
View Cemetery in Randolph, VT.

ELIZABETH ROBERTS
MONTICELLO — Elizabeth Roberts of Monticello, died
Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at home. She was 40.
Daughter of Gregorio Gary and Irma Lopez Benitez,
she was born October 31, 1960 in New York City.
Survivors include her parents; three daughters,
Jillian Rivera of Alabama, Jasmine and Jennifer Rivera, both of
Monticello; two brothers, Antonio Garay of Puerto Rico and Gregorio
Garay, Jr. of Monticello; three sisters, Alma Guerrero of Massachusetts,
Julia Daniel of Woodridge and Edna Carpenter of Monticello; her
lifetime companion, Luis Rivera of Monticello; two grandchildren;
cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Colonial Memorial Funeral
Home in Woodbourne. Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Crematory.
OLGA TRUGLIO
BARRYVILLE — Olga Truglio of Barryville, a child
care supervisor at New Hope Manor in Barryville, and a 13-year area
resident, died Friday, August 24, 2001 at Community General Hospital
of Sullivan County. She was 53.
Daughter of the late John and Lydia Skrypiatowa
Kolosiej, she was born October 21, 1947 in Germany.
She was a member of St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic
Church in Yulan and the Eldred School PTA.
Survivors include her husband, John Truglio, at
home; a daughter, Lydia, at home; a son, Joseph of Greenville Township;
a sister; Doris Garcia of Cape Cod, MA; five brothers, Michael Kolosiej
of Brownsville, TX, Peter of Apple Valley, CA, Eugene of Jacksonville,
FL, John of Las Vegas, NV and Terry of the Bronx; three grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
A Mass of the Resurrection was held at St. Anthony’s
Church in Yulan on Monday, August 27, 2001. The Rev. Evan Greco
officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
