Turn, turn, turn…

By DOROTHY HARTZ

At the arts center, changing seasons focuses attention on the upcoming cultural calendar.

Not quite summer, not yet fall. Labor Day weekend offers celebrations of both seasons.

Summer theater continues at Forestburgh, where “On Golden Pond,” that nostalgic tribute to summer places as well as to aging parents, plays through September 2. Reservations can be made at 845/794-1194.

“The Doctor in Spite of Himself,” a satire by Moliere, is the weekend offering of the Oasis Theatre Company, the county’s newest theatre group. Find it at the Claryville Fire House on Wild Cat Mountain Road at 7:30 p.m. August 31 to September 2. Call 845/985-0390 for more information.

Lanford Wilson’s “Book of Days” closes the season for Shadowland Theater in Ellenville. On August 31, you can enhance the experience with a preliminary discussion and carpool from Grahamsville’s Daniel Pierce Library. Reservations required. Theater info: 845/647-5511 Library info: 845/985-7233.

Theater meets history at the Sault Falls Inn on Saturday, September 1, in a Victorian Masquerade Ball, when the Equinunk Historical Society presents an evening complete with a dessert box auction. Admission is $10 per person or $15 per couple, with music provided by Dos Freres. Period dress is not mandatory, but it is encouraged. Call 570/224-6722 for details.

For those looking forward to fall, on September 2, the Sullivan County Area Farmers Market moves its Sunday venue from Callicoon to Bethel, where a juried arts and crafts tent joins the familiar produce, comestibles and entertainment on the site of the original Woodstock festival. Also on display for the harvest season will be wild and crazy scarecrows created by various businesses and civic groups. Call 845/888-2425 for information on the market or on obtaining a booth.

Fort Delaware’s “Last Weekend of the Season” is a learning experience in how early settlers, without a lavish farmers market to rely on, prepped for the winter. Join in from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Fort in Narrowsburg (845/252-6660).

The annual Roscoe Arts Festival sums up the summer in music and art for free at the beautiful Tennanah Lake Golf and Tennis Club on Saturday and Sunday, September 1 and 2. The gallery opens each day at 12:00 noon and concerts begin at 4:00 p.m. Call 607/498-5617 for more information.

Several other art exhibits around the county continue well into autumn, but September 2 is the last day to catch the work of 34 artists in a wide range of media and styles at the Nutshell Arts Center in Lake Huntington (845/932-8708).

Information about most of the above events appears elsewhere in this issue of TRR. Questions about other local arts activities? Call the DVAA, your arts connection, at 845/252-7576.
