MARY MAY GUIER BARNES
NARROWSBURG — Mary May Guier Barnes of Narrowsburg,
a 60-year area resident, died Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Ellen
Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 90.
Daughter of the late Rev. Lester and Clara Guier,
she was born December 16, 1910 in Gainesville. She was the widow
of Marvin James Barnes.
She was a member of the Beach Lake Free Methodist
Church; taught Sunday school for many years; was a member of the
Women’s Missionary Society; and served on the Board of Stewards.
Survivors include three sons, Wendell J. and wife
Betty of Beach Lake, Howard L. and wife Cindy Sue of Narrowsburg
and Thomas G. and wife Deborah of Honesdale; two sisters, Esther
Newman and husband Bernard of Woodbridge, VA, Ruth Bansbach and
husband Ralph of Leesburg, FL; a brother, David Guier of Bellingham,
WA; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at the Beach Lake Free
Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard C. Gabriel officiated. Burial
was in the Beach Lake Cemetery.

ANNE U. BERTULIS
HONESDALE — Anne U. Bertulis of Honesdale died Thursday,
August 9, 2001 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart. She was 89.
Daughter of the late James and Mary Dutkus Burokus,
she was born in Maywood, NJ.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish
in Honesdale.
Survivors include a son, Gerald J. of Honesdale
and a brother, Dr. William Burokus of Honesdale.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Mary
Magdelen’s Church in Honesdale. Burial was in George Washington
Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ.
IRENE CUMMINS
WELCOME LAKE, PA — Irene Cummins of Welcome Lake,
PA, a retired secretary for the North Bergen Board of Education
in North Bergen, NJ, a 30-year part-time area resident and a full-time
resident for the past three years, died Sunday, August 19, 2001
at home. She was 76.
Daughter of Adolf and Theresa Higgins Trostel, she
was born February 7, 1925 in New York, NY.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford, at home;
two sons, Glenn of Hollywood, FL and Kevin of Succausaunna, NJ;
a daughter, Karen Ondira of New York, NY; four grandchildren; nieces
and nephews.
Services were held at Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral
Home in Narrowsburg, NY. The Rev. Thomas Jones officiated. Burial
was in Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg, NY.

WARREN G. GOLDFEDER
HONESDALE — Warren G. Goldfeder of Honesdale, a
radiologist at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale since 1992,
serving as President of the Medical Staff from 1998 through 2000,
died unexpectedly Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at the University of
Pennsylvania Hospital. He was 55.
He was the son of Aaron and Shirley Goldfeder of
Brooklyn, NY.
He was a graduate of Brooklyn College; earned his
medical degree in 1971 at Tufts School of Medicine; and completed
his internship at Nassau County Medical Center in Long Island, NY.
In 1975 he completed his residency in radiology at St. Vincent’s
Hospital and Medical Center in New York. He then served two years
in the United States Army as a staff radiologist at Fort Dix in
New Jersey. He was a member of the American College of Radiology,
the American Medical Association and the Wayne-Pike Medical Society.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Goldfeder; two
sons, Phillip of Chicago, IL and Jason and wife Ketriellah of Israel;
a daughter, Jennifer of Langhorne; a stepdaughter, Joan Roberts
and husband Don of New Hope; a stepson, Michael Loy of Portland,
OR; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the Arthur A. Bryant
Funeral Home in Honesdale.

KAARE H. GUNDERSEN
GREENTOWN — Kaare H. Gundersen of Greentown, formerly
of Long Island and Lake Ariel, a former tugboat engineer, died Friday,
August 17, 2001 at home. He was 78.
Son of the late Gunnar Ingva Gundersen and Jenny
Olinda Ohlsen Gundersen, he was born in Arendal Norway.
He was a member of the Upper Delaware Unitarian
Fellowship in Beach Lake. He was a veteran of the US Navy in World
War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Gundersen of Greentown;
two daughters, Diane Ritter Meltzer of Lake Ariel and Donna Gundersen
of Greentown; two sons, Kenneth of South Carolina and Ralph of Long
Island, NY; and a sister, Swanhild Bettum of Staten Island, NY.
He was predeceased by a son, Thomas.
A memorial service took place at Teeters’ East Chapel
in Hawley. Laurie Stuart, Commissioned Lay Minister of the Upper
Delaware Unitarian Fellowship, officiated. Cremation took place
at the H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg.
MILDRED HEINLE
WESTBROOK, CT – Mildred (Lillie) Heinle of Westbrook,
died Saturday, August 10, 2001 at Conn Hospice in Branford. She
was 83.
Daughter of the late Walter and Ida Smith Lillie,
she was born October 20, 1917 in Narrowsburg.
From 1966 to 1973 she owned and operated the Elm
Motel on the Berlin Turnpike; and then the OxBow Motel & Restaurant
in Shelburn Falls, MA on the Mohawk Trail. She was president of
the Quinnipiac Valley Theater in North Haven in the 1960’s; was
an active member of the Hotel-Motel Association in Hartford; and
the Better Breathers Club in Essex.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy Heinle of Manhattan,
NY; her adopted daughter, Rosalie Amato of Old Saybrook; three granddaughters,
Tammy Nelson and Tracy Johnson, both of Conway, SC and Evan Heinle
of Old Fort, NC; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Muriel Hinkley
of Bedford, TX and two adopted grandsons, Michael and Ronald Amato.
The funeral and burial were private.

MARIE E. HOLLISTER
HONESDALE – Marie E. Hollister of Honesdale, a former
co-owner of the Town and Country Dress Shop in Honesdale, died Saturday,
August 11, 2001 at home. She was 81.
Daughter of the late Frank and Jenny Palmer, she
was born in Suffern, NY.
She was a graduate of Montrose High School and the
Southern Tier Beauty Academy. She was a member of the Central United
Methodist Church of Honesdale and a former member of the Honesdale
Golf Club. She was a “Gray Lady” volunteer at Wayne Memorial Hospital
for many years.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Bryce E. Hollister;
two sons, Benton B. and Tomas E, both of Honesdale; two daughters,
Phyllis Simmons of Largo, FL and Patricia Stuart of Hellertown;
two sisters, Lurine Corwin of Montrose and Bernitta Millard of New
Milford; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral
Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Paul McCauley of the Central United
Methodist Church of Honesdale officiated. Burial was in East Dyberry
Cemetery in Dyberry Township.

GERALD E. MAUS
ROSCOE — Gerald E. Maus of Roscoe, a retired heavy
equipment operator and lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, August
15, 2001 at home. He was 78.
Son of he late John and Bessie Kinne Maus, he was
born January 31, 1923 in Acidalia.
He had been an employee of the Town of Rockland
Highway Department and had served as the Town Highway Superintendent.
He was a veteran of the US Army during World War II and was a member
of the Harold Wood VFW Post #5911 in Roscoe and the Floyd Keener
American Legion Post #315 in Roscoe. He was a member of the Karan’s
Hunting Club and a long time member of the NRA.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Soules Maus,
at home; two daughters, Linda Buck of Roscoe and Betty Dole of Parksville;
a son, Roy of Roscoe; a brother, Walter of Roscoe; a sister, Bernice
Mann of Liberty; two sisters-in-law, Laverna of Roscoe and Rita
of Jeffersonville; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; nieces and
nephews.
Services were held at the Harris Funeral Home in
Roscoe. The Rev. Theo Lynne Hoffman officiated. Burial was in Riverview
Cemetery in Roscoe.

MURIEL V. NOLAN
GLEN SPEY — Muriel V. Nolan of Glen Spey, a retired
clerk for Pan American Airlines at JFK Airport in Queens, died Monday,
August 13, 2001 at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital
in Harris. She was 84.
Daughter of the late John and Mary Kirkham Crinnion,
she was born October 31, 1916 in New York City. She was the widow
of James J. Nolan.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic
Church in Pond Eddy and the AARP.
Survivors include a son, James M. of Pond Eddy;
a daughter, Arlene J. Hornet of Endicott; a brother, William Crinnion
of Valley Stream; two sisters, Anne Corrigan of Bearfoot Bay, FL
and Grace Pickles of Largo, FL; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Peter’s
Roman Catholic Church in Monticello. The Rev. Robert Ginel officiated.
Burial was in the Glen Spey Cemetery.
LEONARD T. SPYHALSKY
HONESDALE — Leonard T. Spyhalsky of Honesdale, a
27-year meat cutter for the A&P grocery store, died Wednesday,
August 15, 2001. He was 77.
Son of the late Adam and Rose Spyhalsky, he was
born July 12, 1924 in Forest City.
He was a graduate of the Forest City High School
and was a US Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St.
John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale. He belonged to the Cherry
Ridge Fishing Club and the Huff’s Pond Fishing Club.
Survivors include his wife, Anna L. Mikulak Spyhalsky;
a son, Leonard T., Jr. and wife Martha of Mebane, NC; two daughters,
Leanna and Barbara, both of Honesdale; a brother, Walter of Kingston,
NY; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph.
Services were private at the family’s convenience.
Burial was in Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Finch Hill.
OLIVE I. WALTER
HONESDALE — Olive L. Walter of Honesdale, a retired
teacher from the Honesdale school district, died Thursday, August
16, 2001, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 91.
Daughter of Friend E. and Carrie E. Walter, she
was born December 4, 1909 in Honesdale.
She was a graduate of Honesdale High School and
East Stroudsburg State Teachers College. She taught school for approximately
30 years in various local schools including the Beers School, and
the Pleasant Valley One and Two Room School. She was well known
for her horticultural ability and large collection of flowers and
houseplants. Aside from her college years she resided on the family
farm in Dyberry Township for her entire life.
Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral
Home in Honesdale. Murhl Howland and Dan Helenek officiated. Burial
was in the Bethany Cemetery.

RAYMOND C. WEBER
OWASCO — Raymond C. Weber of Owasco, a retired foreman
for the NYS Department of Transportation in Auburn from 1960 to
1976, died Friday, August 17, 2001 at Auburn Memorial Hospital in
Auburn. He was 82.
Son of the late Charles W. and Henrietta Kuhnla
Weber, he was born in Beaver Brook.
He served with the US Navy during World War II and
moved to Auburn in 1963. He was a member of Saints Peter & John
Episcopal Church and the VFW #1975, both in Auburn.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothea Slack Weber
of Owasco; two daughters, Lois Collier and husband Edward of Owasco
and Lorraine Fox and husband Keith of Auburn; two sisters, Helen
Aagre of Foley, AL and Edythe Weber of Binghamton; two grandchildren;
a nephew and cousins.
Services were held at Saints Peter & John Episcopal
Church in Auburn. The Rev. Douglas Taylor-Weiss officiated. Burial
was in Owasco Rural Cemetery in Owasco.
